Re: NBA MVP Discussion Thread 2022-23 (pt 2)
If it becomes a neck and neck race between Giannis and Jokic(they have similar team records), the MVP narrative may shift. With two 2X MVP winners, who do you reward with their 3rd MVP? The player who has the best analytics, or the one who's already won a championship and is a Finals MVP and Top 75 player.
Is this a situation where Jokic experiences "voter fatigue", given he's already won 2 in a row? Every 3x NBA MVP has won a title. Things may change moving forward.

Most of the season is already over. We have 30 games left. There’s no way Giannis is gonna become a serious candidate to win the MVP at this point unless it’s because of injuries. He has his worst numbers since 2018 and the team’s 6.5 points worse per 100 with him on the floor than they’ve been the last 4 years. Meanwhile, Jokic, Luka, and Embiid are all having monster years putting up unprecedented numbers.

His first 5 minutes were absolutely ass. He was 1 of 7 or 1 of 8 to start the game from memory when Bucks were down 20-5. From there 20 of 31 to finish the game and will the win.
Ahh I missed the game. Thanks for the context.
No problem, I also just realised he scored the final 12 points in a row for the Bucks and 20 out of the 28 points in the final quarter.

The one that needs to be serious is you.
He's literally leading the league in boards and he's having a career high in points. This, while he's been
out with knee problem for enough games, without Middleton who's a 3xAllStar, with Holiday and Portis missing enough games too.
Milwaukee is 2,5 games behind.
I would love to hear how a guy with his averages will not be "serious contender" if they finish first.
And besides Jokic, there's nobody with "unprecedented numbers".
Saying he's not the favourite is one thing(i agree).
Saying he's not a serious contender (when he's literally 3rd by bookies), says that you are the one not being serious.
My list as of now:
1. Jokic
(gap)
2. Tatum
3. Embiid
4. Luka
5. Giannis

The MVP race is literally a 2-man race at this point. Jokic and Doncic. Nobody else even belongs in the discussion seriously.

I can't put Embiid in front of Doncic.
Doncic has outscored Embiid by nearly 300 points over the season, that more than accounts for the fact Embiid is 0.1 ppg ahead of Doncic.
Embiid has filled the rebound column but not as well as Doncic has filled the assist one.
The Mavs being 4th in the West is infinitely more impressive than Philly being 3rd in the East. Where would people expect Philly to be?
So stats and team success both support Doncic. Not sure how anyone could have him anything but 2nd behind Jokic (or first if that's your preference)

All of this is facts. Plus Doncic has no stars alongside him whereas Embiid has two stars alongside him. Embiids third best teammate, Harris, is miles better than Doncic’ Avery best teammate.
Doncic & Jokic are carrying their teams.

Bucks are butt ugly without giannis, especially on offense, and might not even make the play in without him.

Embiid's so incredible he's finally putting up Giannis-like numbers

30 games is still 1/3 of the season left. A lot of things can happen with the top teams and top players. Should make for a fascinating home-stretch.

I hate this silly narrative. MVP is for what was done during the regular season. How does winning a championship, being finals mvp and top 75 player have anything to do with MVP makes absolutely zero sense.

I think Howard not being in there is a joke, but AD......Guy is borderline Top 50.
At the time of NBA selections:
AD
Top accolades: One NBA title, four All-NBA 1st Team selections, eight All-Stars, four All-Defensive selections
NBA rank: 49th in blocks, 192nd in scoring, 194th in rebounds
Howard
Top accolades: One NBA title, five All-NBA 1st Team selections, eight All-Stars, three Defensive Player of the Year awards, four All-Defensive 1st Team selections
NBA rank: 11th in rebounds, 13th in blocks, 59th in scoring

This is just a spectacular race, let's face it. You have 03 guys who legit deserve it - Jokic, Giannis and Doncic. They are doing huge carryjobs, with gaudy numbers and great efficiency. You take them from their teams and they instantly become bottom NBA.
Embiid is also doing enough to win it, but he has a lesser case, as his team is less dependable on him. The same for Tatum. Tatum has the best record advantage, but honestly, his game is simply more convencional than the others. And he shares the spotlight with a 27 ppg Jaylen Brown.
But all 5 guys are absolutely having MVP worthy seasons. It's historic I guess.

Agree 100%.
For me at the moment, it's:
Jokić
Dončić
Giannis
Embiid
Tatum

What do his past years numbers have to do with anything at all with the 22-23 MVP award?

I know this has been discussed before, but it's worth repeating. Defense is HALF the game.
I love Doncic and if the award was for offensive player of the year (which it should be), then he is near the top. If you look at who is the most valuable in a total package, you can easily limit this list to one or two players.
