Ben is very useful. Just not when it comes to scoring. The Nets are not going to pay to dump him now. They'll ride with him through next year & then decide what to do with his expiring contract.

personally, take Martin out of it and I'd do any of those without a pick. Ben for any combo of Kelly, Plumlee, Hayward or Rozier.

We need defense, he'd allow Ball to play off the ball as well which he enjoys. I'd take the risk, i think other Charlotte fans might balk though.

Hey Chuck, Question the wiretap says that the pick is an unprotected 2029 #1. What happens to that pick if the Mavs trade a 2027 #1 and say protect it Top 20 or 25 and the 2027 #1 does not convey in 27? It gets pushed off to 2028 and then the 29 #1 they sent to the Nets would be extinguished because it has to convey within 7 drafts of the time of the trade right?

A 27 pick would have to be unprotected or extinguished if it did not convey. Brooklyn owns the rights to the 29 pick, Dallas would have to trade with them to change the protections or get it back.

Ben has not and will not contribute to a winning team. He's not good anymore. He can't stay healthy and he's a 30+ million dollar boat anchor.

If you can either pay to turn him into three useful players. Or take advantage of a bad team hoping he gets healthy and plays better. You do that all day.

It's at least an interesting move. Like what does cap room do them right now? Not much so getting rid of some of the guy you won't or can't resign is a very good idea. Trade for Ben shut him down for the year and see what he has next year. Make sense for the spurs or the hornets. Couple other teams might wanna get in on thatm like the Jazz.

I believe the human aspect of it would be much harder if you actually have a work life intertwined with the people involved, unless they suck, in which case, its probably best for all involved in the organization to move them on.

I'm saying man. I should have been OG'ing the heck out of Ferrari Doe.

I'm confused too though. Looking through those offers, the Mavs one doesn't feel the most valuable to me either. Unless the proffered picks were all heavily protected. But I doubt they were.

Some of the rumors make it sound like they didn’t want to reward Kyrie with a good destination

Kyrie
Booker
Bridges
Johnson
Ayton

Legit is a contender and could potentially win it all. Meanwhile while Luka and Kyrie are talented the mavs roster is a mess. There is definitely a level of spite to all of this.

What I think would be very funny is if Dallas now packaged Kyrie Irving and Dāvis Bertāns for Russell Westbrook and the two unprotected Lakers Firsts. Effectively trade Dallas’ 2029 First Round Draft Pick and two seconds in exchange for Los Angeles’ 2027 and 2029 First Round Draft Picks and $51,422,730 in cap space. If they could coax a Javale McGee for Damian Jones swap, it wild be even better.

Subzero chance of happening, but it would be an incredibly interesting shuffling of cap and assets.

What pick goes into Rozier and Plumlee for Harris and Mills?

Is it worth losing the 2027 Philly first?

Could it be done with Cam and 2nds?

Lots of 2nds? At least that's what I'd have as the difference between those packages.

Yeah I agree that it’s just lots of seconds and that Charlotte should take it.

But I think Brooklyn has to top Westbrook and not a lot of 2nds. That’s the bar.

That’s why I wonder if Harris inclusion means thou have to use Cam or that Philly first.

can't combine kyrie with another player and irving doesnt make enough to match westbrook alone. They can do that with clippers though

You are ignoring this also cost them Dinwiddie and DFS. Doesn't sound like a clever flip in that light does it? And Dallas wouldn't have close to $51M in cap space.

I guess? Conversely, I just wouldn't be all that interested in the first place if I'm Brooklyn. I think they need to have their eyes on bigger fish. They feel like a great landing spot for FVV now.

Ignoring issues of aggregation that make the trade not possible, $51.4MM off-the-books + an unprotected first > Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith. Dallas would have roughly $35-40MM in space, assuming the salary cap jumped to the expected $134MM.

Personally, I would take that flexibility and an unprotected FRP over Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith.

EDIT: As a note, I would probably prefer gambling on Kyrie Irving over the suggested Los Angeles Lakers package too, it is mostly a non-CBA compliant (unless it was turned into the three-team trade) thought experiment.

You actually can trade him for Westbrook because his trade kicker bumped him to 38.9. that makes west Brook for Kyrie legal. Now you cAn get the seconds back and say demand 2 firsts. That's a decent flip I guess. Then do as a separate good faith move bertans for beverly.

For what it is worth, as a Minnesota fan, I would never advocate circumventing salary rules.

It would have to be transitioned into a three-team trade before being officially agreed upon, but regardless, it is largely just a thought-experiment.

That's fine if you think the value is higher in a vacuum. I agree its a lot of value, that much financial savings, and the pick. But it certainly doesn't help convince Luka the team is committed to winning with him.

But mainly I was just helping you with the total cost which you omitted the biggest parts of. :D
