Christian Wood: What am i missing?
Now i know he had issues in Houston, but Houston is pretty toxic and everyone has issues there. This year hes been very good for the Mavs, especially as a starter. I don't remember Dallas' exact record when starting Wood with Doncic, but its a very good record IIRC. Yet, supposedly they wanna give him away. I don't get it

I literally thought from the title that this was something he tweeted after reading LeBron's unnecessary ass tweet today

LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord

Exactly. Offensively he’s a stud but you can’t score 25 and give up 30.

bad D makes several people better, not just the one, and that's the problem

Let's go back to his days with Detroit. Houston attempted to trade for Woods and Detroit originally passed. This eventually made him want to play for Houston.Dominater wrote:Now i know he had issues in Houston, but Houston is pretty toxic and everyone has issues there. While in Houston, he witnessed how they operate, and even vocalized how disappointed he was with James Harden wanting out. Words exchanged at practice with Harden and both end up being traded.
It's safe to assume he will want $20m or more per season in free agency. He's not worth the risk of locking up so much money into. It's even more risky for Dallas who have needed cap flexibility for along time.

Re: Christian Wood: What am i missing?
Dinwiddie, Luka, Wood had the worst net rating in the league through the first 20 games.
They basically can’t share the court together because of how bad Wood is defensively.
Kyrie is an even worse defender than Dinwiddie …

People should look up his defensive FG% at the rim. It's actually excellent. Im not saying hes a good defender, as his man on man defense is straight up bad. But he is not close to the defensive liability people are saying. His weak side defense is very solid, and if you put a good defensive big next to him, his defensive contributions would be fine.

Did mavs just notice about his bad defence or did they genuinely expect him to learn how to play defence at the age of 28?

Ask Bud why he coudn’t crack the rotation in Mil.
Wiki: “On August 14, 2018, Wood was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks. On March 18, 2019, Wood was waived by the Bucks.”
At the time it already looked like he could score 20 per game.

Read my post above. His defense is NOT that bad, pretty much none of the defensive metrics paint him as any kind of horrible defender. At worst he's a slightly below average defensive player who you don't want matched up against large post up bigs, and is a bad one on one defender, but who actually does a decent job switching and has underrated help defense inside. He's simply too light weight. You ideally pair him with a defensive big who can take care of guarding the Jokic/Embiid's of the world. Unfortunately the Mavs don't have that kind of player to help cover some of his defensive weaknesses especially with Kleber out. Playing him at the C as the only big is equivalent to asking Luka to guard fast PG's. But Luka can do a more than decent job against 3's and even 4's especially on the block because he's super strong for his size.

I think the main knock on him is that he is kind of a low energy guy. I remember just one game where he kept his energy and effort high for almost the whole game. That is not enough to be more than a middle of the pack quality type of player.

Mavs have a record of 23-14 with Luka and Wood. Wood is also averaging 20/9/2blks as a starter. He's copying what KP was basically doing on offense. He's actually been amazing and very valuable.
Dinwiddie was beyond horrible on defense, Trae type of defensive numbers, that's why it maybe looked bad to you. But Luka/Wood/Green trio combo, produced by far the best NETrtg for Mavs and they actually had one of the best in the league. Kyrie is also much better on defense than Dinwiddie in direct matchup.

Re: Christian Wood: What am i missing?
Even when he came to Detroit, he was known for being a talented malcontent that wasn't worth keeping around. He played great for Detroit - many fans thought he was better than Drummond and maybe he was (high bar, I know). But Weaver was not that interested in keeping him around. Just like New Orleans wasn't. Just like Milwaukee wasn't. Just like Houston wasn't. Just like Dallas isn't. I haven't been in any of those locker rooms, but I feel like he just has to be an anti-culture guy.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Look up the net rating when Green, Luka, Wood and Kleber shared the court. Think you will find it's a complete 180 and it's also the best combination the Mavs have had. Give Wood a fellow big to take the responsibility of guarding the opposing teams big away from him and he's fine, because he's switchable and has very solid weak side shot blocking. Also Kyrie is NOT a worse defender than Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie was arguably the worst defensive starter on the Mavs who are already a horrible defensive team. Dinwiddie is a complete turnstile defensively who doesn't stay in front of anyone. Kyrie has actually been passable defensively this season.

Luka likes him quite a bit and has not only expressed it, but you can see it on court.

Strange thing is though that he seems like a well mannered and intelligent guy in Interviews. On the bench he always is engaged and talks and jokes a lot with his teammates.... i do not get where he is getting on the nerves of someone. That said, where you see smoke there is often a fire...
