ATG Mt. Rushmore by accolades

Post#1 » by dygaction » Fri Feb 3, 2023 8:54 pm

Disclaimer:
1. try to get a simple mathematical evaluation with minimal interference/interpretation
2. all subjective, so if you have different formula, yours are likely better
3. only for reference for ATG ranking if someone wants to consider accolades/achievements

Rules:
1. Only players at least one MVP AND one Finals MVP are considered, as those players were the best in a long season among the peers as well as demonstrated to be the leader of a championship team;
2. EFMVP is calculated based on FMVP+(Rings without FMVP/2), to account for ATGs' contribution to the championships
3. The ranking is based on MIN{EFMVP, MVP} to account for consistent dominance, when there is a tie:
a- the player with SUM{EFMVP, MVP} wins, if there is still a tie,
b- the player with more MVPs wins, if there is still a tie,
c- the player with more FMVP from the same EFMVP wins, if there is still a tie
d- the player with MVP/FMVP in the same year wins, if there is still a tie
e- the player with more trips to the finals win (closer to more rings and FMVPs)

Results:
1. Russel MIN{6.5, 5} = 5, I only gave Russel 2 FMVP to get to EFMVP of (2+(11-2)/2)=6.5
2. Jordan MIN{6, 5}=5
3. Jabbar MIN{4,6}=4
4. LeBron MIN{4,4}=4, lose to KAJ due to rule a, SUM{}
5. Magic MIN{4,3}=3
6. Bird MIN{2.5,3}=2.5
7. Wilt MIN{2,4}=2 (have to give Wilt 67 FMVP with 17.7/28.5r/6.8a)
8. Duncan MIN{4,2}=2
9. Curry MIN{2.5,2}=2
10. Shaq MIN{3.5,1}=1
11. Kobe MIN{3.5,1}=1 Lost to Shaq due to rule c
___________________________________________________________
After here, other achievements may come into play and the exact ranking can be tricky.

12. Moses MIN{1,3}=1
13. Giannis MIN{1,2}=1
14. Hakeem MIN{2,1}=1, Lost to Giannis due to rule b
15. Durant MIN{2,1}=1, lost to Dream due to rule d
16. Reed MIN{2,1}=1, lost to KD due to rule e
17. Walton MIN{1.5,1}=1
18. Unseld MIN{1,1}=1,
19. Dirk MIN{1,1}=1, lost to Unseld due to rule e

I know, please refer to Disclaimer 2 :D and you are welcome to propose different models or revise the criteria.

Seems fine to me though Russell obviously should be getting alot more than 2 here.

Would probably replace mvp's with "mvp votes" or "mvp voting shares" or "1st place mvp votes"

could do a simialr thing with fmvp but that will have less of an impact

Always want to see Mikan on these things, just like George Washington belongs on the real Mr. Rushmore. Not sure how high he finishes since you have to estimate both MVPs and FMPVs for him as well as figure NBL and other early leagues but he deserves a mention.

Mikan would definitely have 3 MVPs (perhaps as many as 5) and he would have been named FMVP in each of his five championships.

As has been alluded to above, NBL (which, whilst the Lakers and Royals were there was likely the superior league) would take the total championships to 7.

Just by accolades and rewarding dominance against competition in the same era, maybe he can be somewhere above Magic or even LeBron.

I like the idea of instead of Mount Rushmore being the 4 best players, it goes from GOAT to GOAT. I’d start with Russell though to keep it to four heads since the NBA was still a pretty regional league when Mikan played and he played a relatively short time in it.

So my Mount Rushmore is: Russell (1st GOAT), Kareem (took GOAT title from Russell), Jordan (surpassed Russell as GOAT in the ‘90s), LeBron (current GOAT).
