Re: Trade Deadline Approaches
Considering the certainty that we couldnt resign both Grant and Hart, and the cost of Durant (A trade we 100% could not compete w/), I am liking these moves.
Hart and 2029 SRP for Reddish, Thybulle, FRP likely in the 15-20 range.
I think thats a really good haul.

Cronin has had a nice deadline if you just look at it in a vacuum. When you look at it big picture...

All of these parts are expiring, so Portland is going to have to pay to keep any of them.

I think availability matters. What needle mover did we miss out on? The PHX package is better than anything we could offer for KD (By a big margin IMHO). Other than that its a bunch of role players being passed around, many of which are super old and only make sense to teams that are in contention (IE 5 SRP for Crowder).
If anything this deadline is a indication of reality. We are not contenders, we have no path to contention based on our assets and league wide avaliability of needle moving guys, so we took the route to get youngsters and a FRP.
It makes sense.

The Hart trade was fine, it wasn't bad value, Cam isn't the answer, but he's not the problem. The Thybulle trade was just stupid. You can't trot out Winslow, GP2, and Thybulle. Teams are just going to trap Dame to death, none of those guys can shoot at all. You gave up an asset you didn't have to for Thybulle for a guy who's expiring and you will have to pay to keep. Makes zero sense unless Winslow and/or GP2 is on the move.

I'm so sick of this bs.
Stop. This mess isn't on Cronin yet. He's working with what Olshey left him, which was Dame, no draft picks, and seven 6'3" or shorter guards.
I don't have a cool avatar image because Dame came home.

Olshey 2.0. None of his moves were really that bad in isolation, but then you look at his body of work and holy crap! He damned the franchise into mediocrity! Win just enough to keep your job, but not enough to legitimately compete or contend despite ample resources there.

100% agreed. This mess isn't on Cronin yet. He's done some solid deals (CJ deal... for the most Part. The Hart deal is "fine") and some not so good ones... He is handcuffed by Olshey, but at some point that becomes a too long used excuse. he has through this off-season to do something.

Re: Trade Deadline Approaches
I see that Cleveland and Kevin Love may be close to a buyout. Would it make sense to bring him in for the rest of the season?

Re: Trade Deadline Approaches
Jake Fisher says the Blazers are in talks with Warriors for Wiseman. Another player I had pegged for a good buy-low / kick the tires on.
So far I had quite a few of the Blazers targets pegged this deadline.

Re: Trade Deadline Approaches
FWIW, Warriors fans on the GB were plenty happy with a Wiseman for GP2 swap when I discussed that yesterday with their fans. Something I'd be plenty happy doing too.

Yeah it does seem like a pretty big win-win

LOL Hart is 5x the player Thybulle is. Thybulle is so bad offensively he can't get on the court.
The 2023 version of Hart was no offensive powerhouse but he's here to play a similar role. Team basically
downgraded from Hart + some SRP to get a protected pick in the teens. A trade that shoots around the
edges and doesn't move the needle unless the team hits with that FRP or that FRP is part of something
larger

Obviously, you don't play Winslow, GPII and Thybulle all at the same time (except for late game offensive/defensive substitutions), but it would be nice to have at least one top tier defender on the court at all times.
And Payton and Tybulle can shoot. Both are aces at knocking down the corner 3 (.434, .486 and .508 for Thybulle the past 3 seasons and .403 and .583 for Payton over the last 2 seasons). They are basically the guard versions of a younger PJ Tucker - exceptional defenders capable of guarding multiple positions who can also knock down open corner 3s.
The "problem" is neither of them can create for themselves. Actually, the real problem is we don't have a coach who understands how to correctly use this type of player. Lack of shooting did not stop Thybulle from starting on a contender (prior to the Harden trade) or Payton from being a valuable piece of a championship team.

Re: Trade Deadline Approaches
I'd do GPII straight up for Wiseman at this point.
Don't the Blazers still need to trade/waive someone to clear a roster space due to the NY and Philly trades?
