Barton and Bev would be a coup of buy out hunting

Initial reaction: We’re better. I’m a Bones Hyland guy. 8-)

madmaxmedia wrote:The reshuffling of the guards was sorta weird, but necessary to get Plumlee. We ended up with a group more or less equal in quality as before, but got Plumlee with it. And bought low on Bones, let's see if he can turn it around with us. He's very cost-controlled for the next 3 years.

We’re younger where it counts. Bones Hyland is a player. There are a couple of posts in here that kind of hint at not playing him. All I can say is … huh? We needed a PG? Bones is a PG. We wanted youth? Bones is barely 22. We want to save money? Bones has twop years after this one at $6.5 million—that’s total, not per year. We want a good character guy? Bones has been the subject of trade rumors all year and has been a good soldier and teammate; he’s well liked on that team. A winner? His teams have won over 60% of the games he’s played in.

His minutes have been all over the place this season, especially in the last month. But in his first 33 games this year—when his team went 22-11—he did this

20.8 mpg, 13.6 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 3.2 apg, .417 FG%, .417 3P%, .856 FT%

His +/- has been bad this year, but that’s partly because of Denver’s subpar bench. Bones is a dude that can help us now, and should/will get better in the future.

Plumlee has a little more range than Zu and is a better passer, though he’s not as much of a rim protector. Great rebounder, smart player. His acquisition means that small lineups will now be made a lot more by choice—it won’t be “Zu has fouls; put no board Mook or a 6’8” tweener forward at the 5!" At least in theory, our 4s should be … 4s more of the time. That’s good.

I’ll miss Reggie. He did good things for us. Someone will get him; I wish him nothing but the best.

It makes us old, but I’d start EG and TMann as our guards, and have Powell and Bones coming off the bench.

Great post. Interesting stuff on Hyland.. looking forward to seeing what he can do, and bodes to be a part of the Clips longer-term future.

I agree about the guard starters, at this point.. spacing, experience, scoring stability, and defensive toughness.

If the Clippers have that much in expiring money, then it means we won the "Larry". Otherwise, Gordan can be traded near the end of June to reduce the luxury tax burden. The team that trades for him could then cut him.

all out for who ? not gonna be Durant now. Beal? Lillard? Siakam? Lavine? Ayton ? they would all require 3+ FRPs which we can't do.
only option to improve roster in the summer is S&Ts and there aren't many great options there. Notable FAs are Middleton, Irving, Vucevic, FVV and maybe Harden.

Gordon's salary number will be zero for trades because only guaranteed portion counts, but the expirings of Morris and RoCo are significant. I mean we could pick up Gordon's option but that seems much less likely. If he plays well we could re-sign him to less money.

New opportunities open up every year. It's not going to be the free agents for us, but players under existing contracts that get moved. We have draft picks and expirings to be active.

Maybe I haven't watched enough Bones Hyland plays, but I am gonna need some convincing that he's PG. He's been a bona fide chucker every time I watch him play.

Not a fan of Powell and Hyland on the court together. Too small. With this new roster, we should have VERY limited time in the course of a game where we have 2 people under 6'5" on the court together.

There should also be very little time in the course of a game where a combination of Kawhi/PG and Zubac/Plumlee aren't on the court. Everyone else supplements those combos depending on the match-ups.

A combination of the following should be our closeout squad:
Kawhi
PG
Zubac/Plumlee
Powell/Gordon
Mann/RoCo/Batum - PG would be handling the ball if Mann or Powell aren't on the court

My bad. The luxury tax bill comes dues at the end of June with calculations from the end of the regular season. No way to cut the luxury tax bill for this season.

That said, Clips could still trade Gordon's $19M spot for 2022/2023 prior to June 28 to a team looking to reduce their cap for 2023-2024. The team that trades for him could then cut him and only have the guaranteed portion count for 2023/2024. If Clips win the title, then Gordon's full $20M for 2023/2024 is guaranteed because he has met the minutes played requirements.

dreadful if true but also i agree

Well, I believe MartinToVaught is a Westbrook fan, so at least one fan will be happy.

I'm dreading those general board Westbrook fans coming along for the ride if this happens though.

That's the thing, as far as trades go only what is guaranteed money counts towards salary matching. For Gordon to count for $20.9M in a trade this offseason, Clippers would have to first pick up his option for next year which means the team that trades for him is on the hook for the money.

(as you say, if we win the title his money is fully guaranteed next year.)

Even if its only for a few months, and not that LAC are world-beaters right now, but I am happy that we've sprung good soldier E Gordon from that multi-year pit of sub-.300 ball
