Nobody knows what's going on for sure, but we have seen there's no big interest for Wood, from others or from Mavs site. And that's telling. I can understand Mavs not wanting to commit before they know, what happens to Kyrie.

See we just don't know that part in bold - we have no clue. I think the parts in italics on the other hand are very fair statements.

I believe it was very clear that they were shopping him before trade line, without any success. And parts in italics tell us that they didn't offer him new contracts, meaning no big interest from Mavs part either.

It was reported - a lot of bs reporting is done every day. And again: we don't know what we shopped him for - a Mikal Bridges or cap relief? We simply do not have a basic clue.

Nico got interviewed today and said the team has ball handling covered at a high level as Josh Green can handle 3rd PG duties if needed. Says his need is more for wing depth and defense at the wings.

So going by that, big men and point guards are out.

Terrence Ross
Wil Barton

Those are the names I can think of from the potential buyout market.

Yeah. Im going verbatim. Nico said "wing depth AND maybe defense". So Ross covers wing depth, defense not so much. Im guessing he just wants another guy off the bench in case Theo Time doesnt show up to the damn playoffs LMAO!!

I hope Luka with a less usage can help against big wing... When he is focused he is not so bad defending the post.

I'm actually thinking the same thing. That Luka can play PF on defense. Then have Kyrie, Green and Bullock all running back on offense when they get the rebound. That saves Luka from guarding quicker point guards.

Main takeaway from Nico is he expects a way bigger role for Josh Green now. Let's see if Josh can step up and perform when given a starting role every night.

Probably he will have a rollcoaster season... I don't expect too much continuity because this is the very first NBA season for him.

I agree with Nico that Josh can be a point guard he is probably a better PG than Jackson, Beverly, and Wall. Westbrook still probably has the edge but unless Westbrook is coming to be a backup and play 16 minutes and keep his mouth shut and defer to Luka and Kyrie I don’t want him.

Green's handles need to be better for that to become a reality. I think Green still tries to play too fast sometimes. He 100% needs another off season and a chance to play big minutes now that DFS is gone. Then i hope we will see another, even better, version of him.

Cuban also said that Green is playing at an "all star level" in an interview recently as well. It's cool to see all the confidence they have in Green but are we really sure about putting all our eggs in the basket that Green can be our defensive stopper AND 3rd ball handler? Seems like a lot to ask for a guy that only recently started playing big minutes. Got to have at least have an insurance policy to cover some of those duties.

I think they're just amplifying it in the media to pump his trade value too. In case the right deal comes along. Cuban and Nico been saying the same thing about Green.

Nico and Cuban, like Austin Powers, like to live dangerousely...
Defense wins draft lotteries!
Fortune favours the bold, so it ducked Nico Harrison.

I think they're right, they're just saying it about a yearly too early.

Ideal Offseason:

1) Resign K. Irving - 5 years 210M (Player option on Year 5)
2) Extend J. Green - 4 years 60M (Player Option on Year 4 )
3) Resign A. Lawson - 2 year Minimum (Team Option on Year 2)
4) Resign D. Powell - 1 year Vet Minimum
5) Resign T. Pinson - 1 year Vet Minimum
6) Resign M. Morris - 1 year Vet Minimum

Trade w/BKN:

BKN Receives: D. Bertans / J. McGee / '25 Unprotected 1st / '26 Pick Swap / '30 2nd / Full 6.8M Cash Considerations
DAL Receives: D. Finney-Smith / P. Mills / D. Sharpe

7) Hold fast with Wood. If he won't accept our 2 for 35 (Post-Kyrie of course) he can go and accept someone else's NTPMLE @3 for 36. That said, if Atlanta does finally move on from Collins this summer, perhaps they could be a S&T partner that nets us Capela. Either way, 1.5 years of THJ & Wood (@35ishM) + '27 1st & '25 2nd can be dangled at the deadline for a C upgrade and we're set.

Rotation:

PG: K. Irving (36) / J. Hardy (12) / P. Mills
SG: J. Green (32) / T. Hardaway Jr (16) / T. Pinson
SF: L. Doncic (36) / R. Bullock (24) / A. Lawson
PF: D. Finney-Smith (32) / M. Kleber (24) / M. Morris
C: C. Wood (28) / D. Powell / D. Sharpe

Some will say it's a steep price to pay (in draft capital terms) for a 30 year old DoDo, and while that may be true, bringing him back makes too much sense - contractually, sentimentally, positionally, narratively, culturally - you name it. Acquiring a developmental big and 3rd ballhandler (who's on an expiring contract and incidentally cements our grip on the Australian market) is just gravy. It's an easy W for Nico with the fans and it allows the Nets to continue stockpiling draft capital. Beyond that though, it unclogs a bit of their wing depth, more firmly clears up their books in '25-'26, and nets them a generally well-liked vet at center to back up and mentor Claxton.

Assuming THJ doesn't have a defensive renaissance & Capela doesn't regress/continue to be hobbled by injuries, I'd happily couple the former with Wood and a pick(s)/swaps for Capella & Bogdanovic at the deadline or this summer in a S&T. The latter effectively fills the Peja/Bertans role as a 3pt specialist but on an 18M expiring deal. Next year's playoff rotation:

PG: K. Irving (40) / J. Hardy (15) / P. Mills
SG: J. Green (35) / B. Bogdanovic / T. Pinson
SF: L. Doncic (40) / R. Bullock (25) / A. Lawson
PF: D. Finney-Smith (35) / M. Kleber (25) / M. Morris
C: C. Capela (25) / D. Powell / D. Sharpe

That's a crazy bad trade. I get DFS is our guy and we love him but he's gonna be 30 and is a quite limited player. No way you give away an UNPROTECTED 1st and a Pick swap and a 2nd... pure madness.
Bertans will have 1 year at $5m left so offloading his contract isn't relevant value either.

If only Donnie Nelson could draft, imagine how many Josh Greens would he have pulled out of the draft. :banghead:

I'm rarely (if ever) antagonistic on this forum, but the ignorance you brandished with your 'UNPROTECTED' in all caps simply has to be addressed: The Mavericks are not able to beneficially protect either of their remaining tradeable picks this decade. For illustration, the reason we couldn't include our 2025 1st in any trades this year is because of the Top-10 protection we put on our 2023 1st owed to New York from the Porzingis trade. If we finished as a bottom 10 team this year, we'd keep our pick and owe them our 2024 1st instead (again Top-10 protected). In the hypothetically unfortunate event we were bottom 10 again the following season, we'd keep our 2024 1st and be forced to convey our 2025 2nd round pick instead. If, however, we were to instead finish in the top 20 next year (after finishing bottom 10 this year), then our 2024 1st would have conveyed to NYK - rendering our 2025 1st round pick untradeable per the Stepien Rule which prevents teams from trading their own firsts in back to back years. Note here that the mere possibility we'd have to one day convey our 2024 1st to NYK is, by itself, enough to preclude us from trading our 2025 1st until the 2023 1st is conveyed. This 'potentially conveyable' concept even extends to 2nd rounders as well. Case in point, leading up to this year's deadline, our 2025 2nd round pick was (and still is) not legally tradeable because it was still possible for it to one day be owed to NYK. This is the unspoken downside of many of these protection mechanisms.

Say the Mavericks were to top-whatever protect their 2025 1st in some trade this summer. Assuming the league approves this transaction, (an unlikely presumption as you'll soon see) if we somehow managed to retain the pick that year, what future years are you deferring the pick to if it doesn't convey? If it becomes our 2026 1st we will not be able to trade a 1st rounder until 2031 - including our 2027 1st which we currently can trade - draft day trades notwithstanding. If it becomes our 2027 1st we will not be able to trade our 2027 pick until the summer of 2025 at the earliest, and that's only if the 2025 1st was conveyed. As for including our 2027 1st in a trade, because we've already conveyed our 2029 1st to the Nets, it would be impractical (if not outright impossible) to attach any protections to this pick, as the earliest year the Stepien Rule would allow us to defer the pick would be 2031. Furthermore, even if a team were to benevolently agree to some distant deferment in order to preserve the Maverick's future transactional flexibility, we don't even own a 2nd round pick the protected pick could convert to until 2030. While attaching some form of protection to our 2025 and/or 2027 first round picks may be technically permissible under the CBA, I hope I've made it clear that for all practical purposes, it's a moot consideration.

With all that being said, if we set aside the practical and technical reasons why crying over pick protections is absurd, this deal (as I thought I made pretty clear in my original post) is only something I'd consider if and when Kyrie resigns. Obviously if he doesn't, a Dorian reunion is far from the best way we should use that pick. However, if and when Kyrie does resign, our 2025 first immediately loses SIGNIFICANT projected value across the league. Consequently, insisting on even light protection of said pick would not only indicate a gross ignorance of the market on the part of our FO, but it would kill any negotiation for an impact player and could even be read by other teams as dealing in bad faith. Moreover, a swap right in 2026 becomes similarly worthless, and a 2nd round pick in 2030 is ... well ... a 2nd round pick in 2030 ... But, if after this education you still maintain that surrendering such a 'treasure trove' of assets while offloading ~35M in unplayable salary is "pure madness" for 3 players on great contracts that can actually capably fill the roles this roster needs, then Godspeed.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
