Well, I thought maybe Pritchard was gonna get traded. But it's ok - he is good for back court depth.

And he did say on that podcast that he's gonna hopefully go somewhere to get a bigger role "after this year". So I'm assuming he'll be traded this offseason. It'll work out good - he'll get a ring and then go to some crappy team where he can get more minutes.

His words " hoping to get traded".
Smart, brown, Tatum, horford, timlord has been a rare lineup this year. Hopefully by playoffs we are fully ready to roll that roster on the playoff floor. I now have suns as the favorite they went all in. I like pp but honestly Smart, White, Brogdon is clearly the pecking order. And we got the overseas young uns and jd right behind him. We shouldn't have pg, sg problems for a long time. So we definitely need to get value back for him. we apparently got offers for can't and pp and apparently two or three 2nd rounders away from actual rotation players that Stevens felt was to much. In hindsight I think we thought we had the spurs trade in the bag and got Snell up to speed and we pivoted to muscala. I'm still not a fan but he does what he does space the floor. I wonder what the actual offers were though?

This team as presently constructed should have enough to win the title. Regardless of what happens with that, decisions will have to be made with Grant and Pritchard this summer. Likely, both will have some value around the league (though likely fairly little for Pritchard), and I trust Brad to make good decisions about allocation of assets.

I personally think Pritchard kind of sucks, and as a guard on the smaller size doesn’t really show the PG skills I was hoping for, and he can sort of generate his shot occasionally but it doesn’t end up with a make as often as I’d like. BUT kudos to him for ironically making defense his calling card, along with hustle. If this team has another deep playoff run, he’s gonna have that “winner sheen” on him, and maybe not undeservedly so.

But regardless I already have Davison inked into his spot for next season, and suspect Brad does too.

Other summer questions: does Gallo look like he'll be a contributor next season? Does Kornet sign a new contract in BOS or elsewhere? Does Blake retire — hopefully with a ring — or can he keep doing this part-time thing for awhile? Did JB make All NBA and get super maxed or do we trade him for (glances at scribbled notes on napkin) Siakam?

Yeah, I'm good with his response. Feels like you're overreacting. Maybe there's personal context in this somewhere for you, I don't know. But Smitty gets a fair amount of dumb replies to his Tweets and I think he's fairly judicious with his responses. The reply to nis post provided nothing of intelligence to the discussion so I'm good with Smitty calling out a ignorant response. So yeah, my original post stands.

Fraudulent? That's interesting. Have there been times where he's said something about the team that has not come true or not been reliable? Maybe I missed something.

Right now the Celtics are about $25.2M into the luxury tax. Another close to $3M on incentives for Brown/RWilliams/White could be earned.

If we go with the premise that ownership is willing to be in the tax for the same amount next year...

The projected tax line is $162M. We are at $162.7M with the following 12 players signed:

Smart / Brogdon / Pritchard
Brown / White
Tatum / Hauser
Horford / Gallinari
RWilliams / Muscala / Kornet

So again, assuming ownership is willing to spend the same tax again, we should have about $25M to spend/

Obviously the big question is Grant. Let's just throw out a comparable... Marcus Smart signed for 4 years/$76.5M ($19.1M). His year 1 salary with standard backloaded structure was $16.6M. So even if Grant signed for $20M/year, his year 1 salary would still only be about $17M.

In theory, they could re-sign Grant for a deal as bloated as $20M/year AND make some sort of all-in trade of Gallo/Pritchard/Muscala/all our picks for Markannen/OG/Mikal Bridges/etc. and still only be right about where we are this year in luxury tax payments.

The issue comes in the following year where we need to account for a (hopeful) Jaylen Brown raise. Granted, that raise would be more than covered by Gallo/Pritchard/Muscala/Kornet off the books and the yearly rise in the salary cap/tax line, but now you get into a point where you have a bit of a bare bones roster while being deep in the tax.

The year after that you have another raise due to a (hopeful) Tatum extension. But that year you have Brogdon/White/Horford off the books to more than offset.

So looking ahead to this offseason, it will be interesting to see how Stevens and ownership approach the cap sheet. My hope is that they were willing to go all-in on the '23-24 and '24-25 seasons with a similar-to-this-year tax bill for '23-24 and then an extremely large bill in '24-25. Then they could reset the luxury tax in '25-25 offseason before repeater rates kick in.

This is a good summary. I think there's a reason why Wyc is ALL IN for winning a title this year and "muscling up" and all that. For exactly the picture you painted. I don't think his pockets are that deep. He doesn't own the Garden. I do think there's a limit. And I do wonder if Jaylen is going to be a casualty of that. I DEFINITELY don't think they can afford 2 SuperMaxes. They might be able to afford JB at the lower rate if he doesn't get All-NBA, but that opens the door for JB to take other offers and maybe leave us with nothing for him. Add in what's happening with Grant. I don't see us going over 4/60 and if just 1 team offers more, we're gonna be in a tough spot. There may be some different players on this team next year and I think Wyc is bracing for that even though most fans haven't noticed yet.

Either this summer or next trade deadline: Jaylen Brown for Luka Doncic. Brown obviously can't appreciate being a Kevin McHale to a Larry Bird and when the Kyrie experiment fails, as it inevitably will, Luka will want out.

hell naw to rooting for Embiid or Luka.

I mean, I could *almost* consider it with Joel, if he bought in to being part of Tatum's supporting cast. But it'd just be years and years of watching him shoot more and more 3s and I'm not interested in that even for free.
