Cole last year at like 31 mpg starting mostly would mean he plays primarily against the opponents starting group. This year at about 25 mpg coming off the bench means most of his time is against the opponents second unit. No not every minute of his playing time is against backups but don't for a second try to argue that he's on the floor versus the same level of competition that a starter is facing.
its a game to game thing. maybe the starter gets in foul trouble, maybe they run different rotations. but my argument stands. opposing players are not dependent on our lineup. Mosely subs in Cole at the 8 minute mark doesnt mean that opposing coach is subbing in their backup PG.
Actually the reason for rotations is based on fatigue. Humans just can't sprint nonstop. Therefore most starters and bench players are on similar rotations throughout the league. When Cole comes in for his stint around the 8 minute mark it's not to sub out fultz. He plays a few minutes in both halves off the ball with fultz still handling lead guard responsibilities.
The majority of Cole's minutes are against backups and not starters. That is a big part of why his play being better this year
