Re: Javonte Green news - knee surgery
Quietly unnoticed, another Bulls knee injury goes on and on...
Still no running!

Whatever happened to the optimism of him being out about a month?! (Woj tweet on page 1 over a month ago)

I've been working on analyzing defense, and I think you're right about Green, but I think DJJ might be better, just in less showy ways.
Green is pretty average when it comes to what I think of as the defending shots. His DFG% (the FG% of guys he the league identifies him as defending) is pretty close to the league average and so are his rates of contesting shots.
Where he's good is that disruptive defense. What I think of as defensive possession or non-shooting stats. He's well above average in deflections, steals, and loose balls.
Because of this, I think he sticks out.
DJJ on the other hand, is well above average in the defending shots segment of defense. He contests at a noticeably higher rate, and opponents make a lower percentage of shots against him. But, he doesn't collect the kinds of non-shooting defensive things that Green does.
Which is more important? I dunno, that's something I'm thinking through. They're both good, and a steal before the opponent even gets the shot off is the best option. But that only happens infrequently. Even the best players usually only get a couple steals a game. A guy who consistently makes his opponent shoot a slightly lower percentage (like DJJ) probably has a similar effect.
I prefer DJJ to JaVonte. I think he's a more complete player and his length and size (even though they're listed at about the same height) makes him more valuable to me since we don't actually have big forwards on this team.
That said, the thing that makes JaVonte special are the intangibles. Yes, he's disruptive on defense, but the plays he makes raises the energy of the entire arena --- the fans get hyped, the players raise their efforts... it's infectious. We clearly miss that. Again, I like DJJ in the rotation more, but having the luxury to put JaVonte in to try and swing the momentum is something we miss.

Damn he had a debridement? That's bad. Tendon issues are the worst.

I'll go ahead and make a sig bet that Mikal is better by RPM this year than Zach.

Javonte has been the better player. Every stat shows it. He accumulated those stats in a bigger role, and the eye test certainly goes his way with the energy and disruption that he brings and that you mentioned.HomoSapien wrote:MikeDC wrote:League Circles wrote:Surprised how many of you guys prefer DJJ. DJJ of course has an edge with upside potential being that he is 3.5 years younger, although he is 26 years old. So the upside is that he should decline a few years later, not so much that he is going to suddenly blossom.

I think both guys are useful. The problem is that we lack scorers to play alongside them. The roster needs balance heading into next season. We have defensive guys in Ball, Caruso, Terry, DJJ and Javonte. We have offensive guys in Zach, Demar, Coby and Vuc. IMO, our biggest problem is that we are starting Pat and Ayo, who are just ok defenders alongside our 3 worst defensive guys. If we had Ball (or even Caruso) and started DJJ with those 3, it would be a better situation. We could probably use a better scoring PG off the bench, and then could run with that guy, caruso, Green, Pat, Drummond and be fine. I don't see much value in White or Ayo, unless Ayo can be that scoring PG off the bench.

An injury that would keep a player out for 1-2 months on another Franchise could be 1-2 years here.

Seems like another botched surgery/rehab. Just not good enough.

'm pretty sure that these very wealthy professional athletes are getting opinions from medical experts across the country. (We know that Levar and Lonzo have.) So, I doubt that any of these issues have much to do with the Bulls specifically.

You would think. Makes me wonder though. You would also think we might hear stories about the Bulls going all out to help Lonzo get more opinions, exams, fly him to Europe, stuff outside the box. For such a unique injury, seems like we’re trying nothing unique around it.
On Javonte, this makes me sad. This gives me the feeling that this is the first domino to him washing out of the league prematurely.

It would be great to get our starting PF back before the end of the season.
