Similar story with the NFL. I know a lot of people hate Brady, but I ended up rooting for him just because of how annoying the Peyton/Montana arguments became. Anyone who takes a position that these rankings have some eternal divine rule to them deserves to have that shaken whenever possible. Same will be true of Mahomes now: upward climb for him, but he became the league’s top quarterback much faster than Brady did, so the pace is there.
Here to share my fandom building off a post that resonates with me. As one who got into the Lakers historical legends (much more casually then, at that time) reading the S.I. "Basketball Book", seeing James win the 2016 finals somewhat after was what got me started into him being someone I would avidly root for (was more Chris Paul, Kobe, Nowitzki at first lol) - and signing on the dotted line for the Purple & Gold cemented it more. Looking back into history, I wish I wasn't a detractor back into my grade-school-hood as I missed out on witnessing (no pun intended) some phenomenal prime years, highs and lows, and what I see as the best Basketball Peak of all time.
As for NFL, my situation is contrary to yours. I grew up around a lot of Brady supporters / fans - including being in a Michigan Wolverine family (I was one of the lunch-table students on the Peyton Manning side of debates however). Seeing my Lions be brutal got me into rooting for Peyton to enjoy football, and I didn't really care for anybody else sans the Lions after he retired. Then comes 2018. In my fantasy football draft - I reached on a pick that was touted as crazy: Patrick Mahomes. The rest is history for his career and my fandom as he won me the league that season, and has carried my team(s) a few other times.
Seeing Brady retire and learning more about football has fortunately enabled me to reconcile past biases/narratives and accept the fact that he is the greatest to ever line up at Quarterback. As one who has become even more of a Patrick Mahomes fan through this past season and playoffs, seeing Tom Brady as the standard Mahomes is chasing
and very well could surpass makes me appreciate both's greatness even more.
That's a lot lmao.. For Mahomes right now, one central thought I have is that: I can definitely relate to more older & older-school LeBron fans as to what it's like to observe a generational talent
from the very beginning exceed expectations, shatter barriers, push the game forward, and play through scrutiny and doubt. I'm very high on Mahomes' first 5 years, but who knows what the future holds. Like all of you, I will be here to witness it play out.
