Build a team (plus bench) with the goal to average 150 PPG

Post#1 » by giordunk » Mon Feb 20, 2023 7:54 am

No limits on starting 5

Your sixth man can have at most 2 all-star appearances

Rest of the bench cannot have any all-star appearances

Defense is not important, your strategy is to beat teams 150-130 every night.

I'll start

Stephen Curry
Klay Thompson
LeBron James
Kevin Durant
Nikola Jokic

Jokic and LeBron will be the primary ball handlers and creators, while LeBron will also be a lob threat that would feast under Jokic.

I think Steph is a pretty easy pick in this scenario.

Klay gets the nod over the other shooting guard suspects because of time efficiency.

Kevin Durant would play the Team USA Carmelo kind of role.

Bench

Manu Ginobili
JJ Redick
Montrezl Harrell

Don't really need a backup point guard when Stephen Curry is your third option as a playmaker/creator.

Dependable shooter in Redick (thought about Jordan Clarkson)

Montrezl Harrell is the first guy on my mind when I think of a decent scoring bench big. TBH any lob threat or rolling big also works.

Stephen Curry
Jerry West
Michael Jordan
LeBron James
Nikola Jokic

Bench (I'll do 6):

Jason Terry
CJ McCollum
Ron Harper
Toni Kukoc
Cedric Maxwell
Arvydas Sabonis

Last line is a little unclear.

In most instances a 20 point victory will be a positive night on both ends. The higher score suggests tilting more offensive (though pace will be a factor in this) but still this complicates things ...

OP title goal (150 points) could be juiced by a defensive style that is inclined towards quick defensive possessions (go for steals, press, don't just try to stay in front of your man) and that leads to transition points (much of above plus leaking out in transition).

A second goal including a 20 point victory margin would introduce different incentives. Would you rather have a team that wins 138-118 or 145-140?

Only way to do that is to force pace.

Ja
Curry
Tatum
Giannis
Jokic

Ja is lightning, Curry pick and roll with Giannis or Jokic hitting cutters in the half court. Tatum can move and can get a shot up in no time, Giannis running with Ja on the break, Jokic quarterback. Play all the lanes on D. Early 70s pace would have to be.

6th man: Lauri Markkanen. Giannis and Jokic are playing all the C minutes, Markkanen plays PF next to either of them.

Bench: Mikal Bridges, Anfernee Simons, Maxey

Probably forgetting someone.

Any well-conditioned team that pushes the tempo to an extreme amount can manage that. Just... shoot in 7 seconds or less.

Assuming you take an average of 6 seconds per posession and your opponents take the average 14 seconds, you have 144 offensive posessions to work with*, needing just a 104 ORtg to clear 150 points.

* Of course, that's discounting rebounds and steals altogether -- rebounds are not really that much of a problem, but your steal difference is going to be pretty negative with such an strategy, I think. Probably should load up on thieves to make up for the gap. But just in case...

Jason Kidd
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Julius Erving
Shawn Kemp
Wilt Chamberlain

Ricky Rubio
Kyle Korver
(Kevin Love) edit: Steven Adams

can eclipse 160 points no problem.

Amar'e Stoudemire
Dirk Nowitzki (2003)
Magic Johnson
Ray Allen
Steph Curry

Kyle Korver (1-time All-Star)
Jason Terry
Jason Richardson
Leon Powe
JR Swish

Terry Mills
Steve Kerr

We'd average 160.

Don't know for sure if it's just ex-Celtics being mean but there have definitely been suggestions that Chamberlain wasn't the guy for a quick transition game (definitely a Cousy quote along the lines of [paraphrasing from memory] "if he thinks we'll wait X long waiting for him to get his ass up court, he can forget it", mind you Cousy came out with a super negative estimate for Celtics titles with Wilt in Russell's place). With your pace game you're probably looking for (to oversimplify) a combination of outlet passer (has to get the rebound obviously) and athlete (with a high revving motor especially). And I suppose spacing for your half-court game when it does happen would help. Or you could box out for Kidd, but then it's harder to get guys leaking out. Russell hits athlete and outlet passing (but perhaps not a great finisher?) ...

Surprised it took that long for someone to do the Nash/Curry pairing.

2007 Steve Nash / 2016 Steph Curry / 2001 Ray Allen / 1994 Reggie Miller / 2008 Amar’e Stoudemire

2005 Jason Terry / 2002 Brent Barry / 1993 Drazen Petrovic / 2023 Zion Williamson / 2018 Steven Adams

2015 JJ Redick / 1980 Cedric Maxwell

Oh, I missed it - thanks.

Still I find it strange that two greatest transition players ever gets so little attention.

You would take Curry over the likes of (say) Erving, James, Jordan, Robertson,Nash as transition catalysts?

Steve Nash - Steph Curry - Reggie Miller - Kevin Durant - Nikola Jokic

Goal is obviously to run and spam threes. Nash is there to make sure shots are taken in 'seven seconds or less'. Everyone of my starters is capable of a 125 offensive rating at their best. I've made my team somewhat limited on defense because I don't want to lock the opposition down at all. While steals would be great - they don't happen that often - I want to maximise the number of possessions.

Actually, you can very easily average 150 ppg if you completely give up on defense and allow the opponent team a wide open dunk on every possession (ahem, like the All Star game). If it's a blowout, nobody will play any defense and they would happily concede 150 points if they are scoring like 250 points themselves.

In a more realistic scenario where you are aiming to get 150 ppg but still trying to win, you just need to push the pace and max out 3s and dunks.

C: LeBron James
PF: Charles Barkley
SF: Reggie Miller
SG: Stephen Curry
PG: Steve Nash

Bench: Bill Walton, JJ Redick, Seth Curry

Normally, I would take Jokic at C for any GOAT offensive team but peak Walton is too overpowered under the 2 All Star rule. LeBron can start as small ball center and both him and Barkley can push the ball in transition well as bigs and put pressure on the defense. Barkley rarely get picked in these kind of threads but 66% on 2s is equivalent to 44% on 3s plus he is also a GOAT level offensive rebounder and that is useful for getting more possessions. Reggie/Curry/Nash are fairly straightforward picks for 3pt shooting and overall offensive impact.

For the bench, Ginobili is technically more valuable than Walton on offense only but I think defense still matters in a comparison like this. Being able to get stops, gobble up defensive rebounds, and throw outlet passes to initiate the fast break is very valuable since realistically, big centers aren't making it past half court most of the time with a 7SOL offense. Jokic is miles better than Walton in half court offense but I don't think he would be fast enough moving up the court for the team to still be playing at 120+ pace. On outlet passing alone, Jokic is still better than Walton but the difference isn't enough to make up for the gap on defense.
