I'm okay with the current rotation. Morris and Wright basically split the PG minutes, and Beal and Nunn split the SG minutes. In some games, Wright's defense will be more needed than the offense of Morris or Nunn. In those games, play Wright more minutes. That's basically what Wes is doing. Maybe he's not leaning on Wright quite enough, but that's just a minor quibble. Wes has the basics right.

I don't see much need to play any of those 4 guys at SF. I'd rather Kispert and Deni get all the SF minutes.

Yes, & this has been gone over in detail in the last 24 hours in this thread.

billikenroy wrote:I assume they have to cut Will Barton or one of the other players and they would still be liable for the cut player's remaining contract....

You are correct that they do need to open a roster spot for Goodwin. But, the team is attempting to negotiate a buyout with Barton -- to save a bit of $$ (some of which might go to enrich Goodwin's contract, who knows?).

Of course, you have to ask what Barton's motivation is to accept a buyout? Which would cost him some $$. Perhaps if there's a team that wants to sign him for the rest of the season, he might be motivated -- given that, like all doors, that one might be closing.

billikenroy wrote:i havent been a follower of the wizards until goodwin became part of the organization so i am asking is it common for the wizards to allow this horrible practice to occur to save money rather than put the best roster on the floor/bench?

I'm not sure what you see as a "horrible practice"? Do you mean the fact that Jordan (definitely one of our favorites here!) hasn't played in the last 3 games, in which we are 2-1?

The organization values Jordan Goodwin (they should: he's played well). They plan to put him on the regular roster. I'm sure all the parties involved -- Tommy, Goodwin, & Goodwin's agent -- are in perfect accord about that. B/c he's under contract, this delay doesn't constitute a danger of losing him.

IOW, it's hard to see a problem in this situation -- for anyone except you, who are eager to see him formally in the league! :) In fact, we all are, & it'll happen soon! & it's great to see a kid come out of nowhere & do well for himself!

&... I just saw the headline that the Wiz & Barton have agreed to a buyout! So, I expect we'll be seeing Jordan Goodwin again real soon! Maybe tonight...?

Finally ,from the very moment the trade went down on KCP for Barton and Morris I knew Denver won that deal. So cutting the chord for Barton is the right move now .
Another move happened with Orlando that could greatly benefit the Wiz . RJ Hampton 22 y o 6'6'" PG and one of the fastest players in the League was bought out. He is the right age and has shown he has a good future in the NBA and would look good for the Wiz

Taking about line-ups, this is from the Athletic's latest power rankings:

"Takeaway: I had a whole plan to break down their quarter-by-quarter performance, and then I was talking with Mo Dakhil about a Wizards lineup I can get behind. I guess the lineup of Monte Morris, Bradley Beal, Kyle Kuzma, Kristaps Porzingis, and Daniel Gafford had to be +9.0 per 100 possessions. Turns out it’s even better. That lineup is +23.0 points per 100 possessions! The problem? They’ve only played 75 total minutes this season. How is that possible? I know stumbled into the Gafford-Porzingis pairing, and they’ve had some injuries, but this is a lineup that can’t be stopped in a small sample size. Free this lineup!"

You don't want to see Kuzma getting any SF minutes next to Porzingis and Gafford in a big lineup? (Oops, I see someone just posted that above me.)

Btw, thanks to everyone posting here for intelligent reasoned posting; it's a pleasure to read.

Small sample size theater. Also, there isn't much more capability to play that lineup more because Porzingis only plays about 32 minutes and Gafford seems to max out around 28. If one of those guys is always on the court to man the center position, they can only overlap for 12 minutes or so.

I'm fine with Kuzma at SF too, but it doesn't really change the math for Avdija. If Kuzma plays some SF, that just leaves more PF minutes, and Deni is the only one that can soak them up.

To put it simply, If Porzingis plays 10-12 non-center minutes at power forward, and Kuzma averages 34-36 minutes at either forward position, that leaves 48-52 minutes left for Kispert and Avdija to split. Whether or not Avdija is actually playing PF or SF makes little difference to me.

Has been awhile. Good to see some familiar names still here pulling for the old 5-12 seed. Anyway, thought i would check in.

I like the team this year even though the first round game plan is still the same. Celtics here we come.

Yeah, I still don't like this trade - I viewed it as another panic PG trade. 20/20 hindsight gives us Wright/Goodwin; Beal/KCP - I like that a lot better.

But I guess we have Morris for another year.

Hampton to Detroit .....Killian Hayes kinda stinking it up a bit .We might see Hampton and Hayes battle it out the rest of the yr at PG for Detroit . This might be worth monitoring with both being young big PG's which would be a good investment for the Wiz "EVEN THOUGH" the Wiz aren't very good with developing young talented players.

I love Goodwin and he deserves a contract.... But do you maybe bring in a big or bring in Jackson instead? To help in the event of an injury where you're thin?

Well... no -- on all counts. I'd have made that trade all day.

Why don't you compare Barton & KCP's '21-22 seasons & explain why KCP would be significantly preferable to Barton alone on that basis?

Did KCP score more points than Barton in '21-22?
No, the opposite. Barton scored slightly more points. OTOH, KCP posted a higher TS% -- .568 to Barton's .548.

Did KCP get more defensive boards? No, Barton got 38% more.
How about offensive rebounds? Barton got slightly more (not much of a difference).

What about assists? Do you remember when tleikheen was claiming Barton pounded the ball looking for his own shot & didn't pass? Tsk tsk!
Except, of course, that Will Barton got almost twice as many assists as KCP in '21-22. In fact, even this year, when Barton's game collapsed, he got almost 60% more assists than KCP.

So much for that example of "objective analysis", huh? :)

Now, in fairness, KCP has had a much better year this year than last.
In fact, he's had one of the best seasons of his career. While Will Barton collapsed totally & is pretty clearly washed up -- after an 11-year career.

OTOH, Monte Morris has had a terrific season -- he's been significantly better than KCP this year! It's not really even close.

I continue to be surprised by how much you all seem to under-rate Monte.

There's no need to "bring in" Jackson. He's on a 2-way contract. & once Goodwin is converted we can add a big as the other 2-way guy.

Why I don't do the trade.
1) Never sold on Barton
2) Gets in the way of the minutes for Deni/Kispert
3) I valued KCP over Morris
4) KCP would be an expiring at the end of this season and I felt would have more trade value
5) I felt like KCP would be better taking the minutes from a Beal injury

Now let's look at the numbers.

Code: Select all

Player   Raptor   WAR
KCP         2.2   5.4
Morris      0.3   2.1

In advance of your rant on straight number - I dismiss the rant :D

Morris is a smart, game manager who almost never takes a bad shot and rarely turns the ball over. His also averaging a career high in assists. Morris gives the Zards something that no PG on last year’s team provided. And, as much as I like Wright, he’s not nearly the poised, oncourt leader that Morris is.

I understand why you might value KCP over Morris, especially given the season KCP is having. But Morris' steady and heady PG play is providing the Zards with something that’s a greater need and much more important, imo, than what KCP would be providing.
