Draft Placement Tournament

Post#1 » by pipfan » Tue Feb 21, 2023 4:50 pm

I tried something like this before-it's stupid but appreciate any feedback.

A 4 team tournament of players, with teams made up of where they were picked. For ease, we'll go with players who were rookies in 79 (what I consider the start of the modern NBA, when Magic/Bird entered the league and the 3 point shot was introduced). Each team is 10 players. Guys must be slotted at their main positions. Each player plays at their peak year.
Team 1 #1 picks (team size)
Magic/DRose
AI/AEdwards
LBJ/Worthy
Duncan/AD
Shaq/Hakeem

Team 2 drafted picks #2-5 (team wing)
CP3/Kidd
MJ/Wade
KD/Pippen
KG/Barkley
Embiid/Mourning

Team 3 Rest of lottery (any player picked 6-14) (team shooting)
Curry/Dame
Kobe/Drexler
Bird/Pierce
Dirk/Malone
Sabonis/Bam

Team 4 Any other player (team defense)
Stockton/Nash
RMiller/Manu
Leonard/Butler
Giannis/Rodman
Jokic/BWallace

The #1 picks should never give AI a starting spot, can't imagine a worse player for them. The last thing a team with that much offensive talent needs is a low efficiency gunner who will get hunted defensively. He and Magic don't provide terribly good spacing either.

You do seem to be grouping players by offensive role rather than defensive role; I would go the opposite route on teams with this much talent. Magic was always the big guard on his team and therefore would be considered a 2 if defensive role were considered as Iverson would be considered a 1.

I thought of that for AI-tough, since two guard has not been a spot for the #1 pick too often. It's really AI or Edwards (or maybe Cade). I guess they could start Rose and Magic, and make AI a bench scorer

I'd have to think about the rest,

My #1 pick 10-man unit would be the same, but with replacing Iverson with Irving (2018) and Rose with Wiggins (2022).
