League avg

2P .546 worth 1.092 pts per shot
3p .360 worth 1.080 pts per shot

FTA is more related with 2PA by good margin. 3P shooting is about space for better 2P offence. So why need spamming 3P shooting at ridiculous rate?

Because when you discount layups and dunks you're getting more points from threes than 2s. 2s also come with the additional benefits of more free throw draws too though, so there value is being understated here I think.

My favorite era was mid 2000s. Dudes still shot threes, but there were quite a few 'Ja Morants' around who wanted to dunk on anything with 2 legs.

Basically, I miss seeing guys knock down mid range/long range jumpers with the sole purpose of selling the pump fake the next go around to drag their scrotum across someone's skull.

Make 2 pointers worth 3 points and 3 pointers worth 2 points. Problem solved.

This seems to be a common defense for the way basketball is played today. But I actually think it's not true. Players aren't more talented, they're more specialized.

3pt shooting & to a degree passing is high demand. Whereas post scoring, midrange and defense isn't. Overall, I don't think modern players are more talented, it's just the way the game is played that makes it seem so.

Entertaining plays can happen at all 3 levels of scoring. The way that Steph can work off screen, attack close outs and pull up, and frustrate defenders is entertaining. The way Derrick Rose would triple crossover on one drive and get by 3 defenders while going up & under the rim for a layup is an entertaining 2 point play. Boris Diaw posting up at 15' and making a beautiful high-low assist is also entertaining.

The danger is that the young kids will focus their talents solely to the 3 point level of scoring and we lose all other forms of entertaining plays, and the league becomes homogenous. In the earlier eras different teams had different personalities. The way the smallball KJ Phoenix Suns ran fast with a ton of 3 point shooting was completely opposite the way the Rockets would methodically post up Dream with the league's slowest pace and grind you to death, and both styles were successful and at the top of the league. The entertainment was in the variety and seeing different teams match up.

I love sushi. But if every restaurant in Chicago turned into a sushi restaurant and all the pizzerias, steak houses, and hot dog places went of business it would be sad, even if sushi is great.

Just bring back hand checking and that should help the defense

Hand checking and moving screens would be beneficial.

I wonder what would happen if everything outside of the paint was worth three points and the lane was changed to a trapazoid

For those wanting change, sometimes it needs to get worse before it gets better. It's not quite there yet.

Boston will legit say their goal is to shoot 70 3PA or something crazy

NBA is lame as hell because of analytics, its getting 3TO’d like baseball. Pure cancer, only fix is to straight up remove the 3 point line.

Celtics shoot the second most 3’s.. your Bucks shoot the 4th most but yeh, it’s all the Celtics fault.

Best solution to the threes is gut gud at twos.

Seriously these shooters put in the extra work to shoot so well at a high rate with little space.

Midrange can comeback. Just need someone to start it putting in that extra work on the midrange game.

3pt and travel era is sickening to watch players coming out of college don't look that skilled anymore and low post scoring is lost art now.

The offensive player knows a defender can't get too close anymore with the landing space rule. Start calling moving screens and most importantly, call travel and carry.

Chucking 50+ 3's in a game isn't a sign of talent. That's strategic but hardly what I'd call talent.

Shooting 48% on threes, like the Warriors did, isn't talent? Just luck, I guess.

Nah, that's the exact problem: Why would anyone put extra work on the midrange game? (Or into the post game?)

There is a shot that is fairly easy to take w/ the current rules and that awards you 3 points. Why would anyone concentrate on any form of a less efficient shot? It would be like a high jump athlete concentrating on the straddle instead of the Fosbury flop...

I was actually thinking about this when I saw that damn near 200-200 score and thought how ridiculous it seemed. Like jumping the shark.

But, yes, I do sort of long for the days of grind 'em out, defensive-oriented games. Maybe even just as a change of pace, because I'm sure after a decade of that, it, too, will become boring again. But this new style of play is wearing its welcome out with me as well. It was also a nice change at first, but now it's going to the extreme as well.

A happy medium between the two would be nice, but I am at the point where I would love to see an era return of dominant big men, low post play, staunch defense, and defensive highlights being more common.
