advanced stats are often misleading and lack context. Why can’t White just be the good role player he is without all the laughable hyperbole like “superstar”, “DPOY candidate” or “he should be starting”?

I started pointing out every time he gets cooked in the last game thread. I think I’ll keep that going for future games so you’ll be forced to acknowledge that while good, he’s a very overrated defender who gambles a lot and gets burned. THAT is why he gets blocks. But for every block there’s a handful of drives right past him for baskets.

This is a little bit over the top off one game man lol.

just trying to counterbalance the over the top posts that elevate him throughout this thread. People openly bait me for believing the trade COULD be one of our worst after every good game. Thought I’d lower myself to that level and return the favor

Here's some context for Derrick White's good advanced stats. His advanced stats have been good to very good when he's been a starter, or when he's come off the bench, or when he's played on a great team, or when he's played with a decent team, or when he's played with a bad team. They were good playing next to great guard defenders in Murray and Smart, and they were good playing next to putrid defenders like Bryn Forbes. At some point it's obviously the player who's driving these stats, not his context.

Yet those advanced stats didn't help his production nor team be anything better than average while in San Antonio. And the Spurs thought so much of him and his advanced stats, that as he was entering his prime, at 27 y/o, they traded him. "But they were tanking" Yeah, because they had Derrick White as their starting PG and that's simply not good enough no matter what his advanced stats say. He's a really good role player. It's the narrative that he's so much more that needs to die

They weren't tanking with Derrick White. They are tanking now after trading White and Murray, and they will be lucky to win 20, whereas before they were winning 33 - 34 games.

The Spurs finished 10th, 11th, and 11th with White and his advanced stats getting major minutes and starts his last three seasons there. They knew what they had and knew it wasn't enough. The definitely not tanking Spurs proceeded to sign and trade away DeRozan, didn't keep Mills, then despite White's amazing advanced stats they took PG Josh Primo, the youngest player in the draft, to eventually replace White.

All the while they fielded offers for White who they wanted to move on from. No deal ended up happening and they entered last season knowing White and Dejounte wouldn't be around long-term and open to offers. They found a sucker in us and a sweetheart deal they couldn't pass up so traded White mid-season and then they traded Dejounte in the offseason for another huge package and ushered in the shameless tanking. They were definitely tanking in all but name before those moves though.

Anyone with talent, getting minutes and touches, especially on bad teams, is going to put up numbers. White is a very smart player, albeit limited athletically, so his advanced stats are going to look good. But those great advanced stats don't mean he's great. They're telling a story that is simply not true. If he was great the Spurs, who most consider one of the best run organizations in sports, wouldn't have wanted him gone for the past couple of seasons despite him entering his prime and with all those advanced stats.

My 2 cents on D White is not based solely on stats. Though some stats are helpful (like 3 point shooting %) it's the other things that stats don't come up with.. Like keeps the ball moving. Plays at a pace I like/desire. Can play well on and off the ball. Is a solid defender on and off the ball. Certainly a good dude/locker-room/chemistry player. Or as I like to think, a Glue-player who can at times do all the Big and small things a contender needs.

Should be noted that on a team that has so many guards that it isn't always easy to find ones rhythm and less opportunities can cause that. So while overall nice "stats" are nice, no one should be judging D White solely on stats. His overall impact is far greater than that.
2 things need to go.. my lack of spell check and Joe..

Hey, every Celtics player has a critic. Name a player and you can find someone who hates them.

I don't think that Comedian guy liked him much, but he's been ducking this place lately.

not a great game from our "all-NBA defensive" role player.

Return to Boston Celtics
