Leadership and culture setting seem to be forgotten traits when people talk about superstars these days. It's why guys like Lebron and Durant will continue to get passes and excuses every time "their teams" fail, and none of their media sycophants will acknowledge the possibility that organizational stability so often is a reflection of the aforementioned traits of your franchise player. Leadership is a skill, and Giannis has mastered it.

The more the Bucks extend this winning streak, the more likely Giannis moves up the MVP ladder. Thing is, he is clearly the best player in the world. Tremendous offensively, defensively, leadership. Jokic just has the triple double stats to draw all the attention. Not that Joker isn’t a great player, but Giannis deserves a 3rd MVP.

Dude had my vote to take over the show with the interview. Now I think he’s up there with Stewart. Wow.

Westbrook winning the MVP changed the game because it was the first time in decades that a guy on a non-elite team won the MVP. You have to go all the way back to 87-88 when Jordan won it for the first time that the MVP went to a guy whose team finished outside of the top 2 of their conference and they finished 3rd. Moses Malone winning it in 81-82 is the last time a guy whose team didn't host a first round playoff series won the MVP. I don't think Jokic wins it last year on a 6th place team that barely avoided the play-in if Westbrook hadn't won it 5 years earlier and I think there'd be a lot more importance placed on the team's records among Giannis, Jokic and Embiid as a tiebreaker.

I think that's the first DS segment I've watched in ten years. Pretty good.

One thing I hardly hear the guys who discuss MVP votes talk about, is how Giannis does everything with less minutes.

vs the nets: 33/15/4/1 in 28 minutes.
vs magic: 31/7/6/1 in 28 minutes.

Those are amazing stats in under 30 minutes!!

Luka is the #1 scorer in the league 33.2ppg he's at 36+ minutes a game, giannis is #4 31.3ppg but only 32+ minutes a game. I'm sure Giannis scoring average went down due to 2 injury games plus his minute average went down. But even before those injuries I'm sure he was well below Luka in minutes.

Dame is now ahead #3 scorer also 36+ minutes, Embiid #2 35+ minutes.

Not to get too obsessed with ppg, but I just think it's incredible what he does on a nightly basis where he often dominates in less than 30 minutes. I do think it gets overlooked.

Edit: Giannis is #60 overall in average minutes: 32.4. credit to Jokic he's only #43 33.6 min.

I could see MVP going either way, with voters leaning towards Jokic. Jokic numbers are crazy and he's leading the Nuggets to a #1 in the west.

Giannis numbers are also incredible and he's leading the Bucks to #1 overall (at the moment).

Jokic has the advantage of the TD stats.

I think next 20 games Giannis could still make an impression. Go off and get a W on Philly, keep the streak going to like 20+ while he dominates, he could make a case and even out the race.

Jokic is unbelievable and deserves the MVP as well. But if you really can’t choose between Giannis or Jokic, just poll GM’s and coaches on who they want leading their team, Jokic or Giannis. Coaches and GM’s understand the massive defensive impact Giannis has. It would be 30/30 teams picking Giannis, that I’m sure of.

100% agree. Unfortunately the voters just say, "Giannis is better at defense" and it's a minor footnote to the main debate. I don't know why Defense matters so little in this award.

Where is the defence gets ignored thing coming from?

Also find it funny Giannis is getting propped up defensively when he’s having the lowest stocks season of his career. The guy is putting in less and less effort on that end every season.

True, but he's also holding shooters to the lowest FG% in the league.

Kevin O'Connor from the Ringer also pointed out some Second Spectrum stat that Gianni leads the Association in fewest points-per-possession allowed when guarding both the ball-handler and the roller in pick and roll defense (the #1 most widely used play). Watching the games it's clear that most of the time teams don't try to run action at him (they prefer to go at Lopez who drops). Both Gianni and Brook are Top 10 in the NBA at rim-protection as far as holding opposing players to way lower FG%, but Brook has contested nearly twice the amount of attempts at the rim cause teams attack him more.
"Wes, Hill, Ibaka, Allen, Nwora, Brook, Pat, Ingles, Khris are all slow-mo, injury prone ... a sandcastle waiting for playoff wave to get wrecked. A castle with no long-range archers... is destined to fall. That is all I have to say."-- FOTIS

I don't understand why stocks are the get go for the good defense these days? in the era were basketball is played way differently players like Hasan Wideside became irrelevant despite having high blocks or why gobert impact is so much lower than what his stats claim to be.

Had this days ago already.

The final “go-time” signal will be when Rayna James and Deacon start sitting courtside at Fiserv.

I think it's going to be hard for Giannis to win MVP over Jokic this season. Jokic has been incredible and our records are close enough to where the triple doubles will outshine basically anything Giannis does.

Depends on how long this winning streak can continue. If they push this over 20, voters will have a hard time not talking about him as MVP.
