Re: Scoot Henderson
The Conley comp was only in terms of approach, pace, shot distribution in the half court, for me at least, and something I see as a medium type outcome. I think there is a divergence between Scoot's physical tools and his shot profile. In the half court, he often settles instead of a constant attack mode driving into the paint which I believe some see incorrectly as an athletic limitation. In the open court, he looks like a slightly smaller Wade/Westbrook with his ability to generate power which is something Conley could not do of course and should help Scoot generate more points.

Smaller guards don't seem to win much or can't elevate and carry teams single handidly. Best small guard we have now is Ja Morant, who will never hit MVP levels. Previous MVP level players were Curry (Goat shooter otherwise wouldn't be sucessful), Westbrook (very good player but probably never MVP), Rose (realistically he was never an all-time 'great' in any year).
Shouldn't he only be judged relative to the class he is in? Why does he need to be the best player on a title team to validate him being selected #2. How many drafts have a redraft where the #2 player fits that criteria?

That's why he is #2, because he has produced better stats than others in his class in a toughter environment and younger age.
This doesn't mean I think he is guaranteed to suceed. Sure if he becomes a Fox/Rose/Westbrook combo, that would be fantastic even though I don't think a player of that calibur is necessarily true MVP calibur like a Luka/LeBron/Tatum/Jokic type of player. Don't get me wrong, achieving any the level of any of those players would greatly exceed expectations at #2, even at #1.
Doesn't mean I can't have hesistations about Scoot due to his (lack of) size. Realistically if Scoot was 6'7" like Black, I would consider him #1 over Wemby.

He doesn't play like Fox, Rose or Westbrook though, that's the thing I don't get with those comps. If he played like them it would be obvious. He plays more like a Conley, Jrue, Lowry type. The thing is the second group are actually the better basketball players, just not the athletes like the first group.

Well, Westbrook/Rose at their best were better, but on offensive playstyle I fully agree for Scoot (defensively is another thing).
I bought a boat.

clyde21 wrote:don't think the Conley comp is insulting, it just doesn't do Scoot's upside justice, his athletic profile is more impressive, speed to power is more impressive, build/strength ratio at the same stage way better, the hands alone on Scoot can make a big difference in terms of ceiling.
here is Conley @ Ohio St.
meanwhile....
this is why people are underrating Scoot's athleticism, the way he moves at his size/build is a complete outlier.
It’s easy to underrate him in the Gleague. Strength is one of his best attributes and right now he’s playing against grown men. He would 100% be putting kids in the weight room in the NCAA.
It’s kind of a red flag that he idolizes Westbrook. If he decides to be more of a Brunson/Cp3 type in the halfcourt, he’ll probably make an all star team in 1-2 years.

Re: Scoot Henderson
that is def a great point, if Scoot right now was playing in the NCAA against other 19 and 20 yr olds he'd be bullying tf out of all of them, get this cat in an NBA training regimen for a few yrs and see what he looks like at 22 or 23 yrs old.
honestly it's hard to comp him to anyone in the NBA right now, he's like a bigger Isiah Thomas, or like a PG version of Kawhi.

CP3 was definitely an MVP-level player. Nash before him. Lillard was never a true MVP-level player but clearly an All-NBA one who could be the unequivocal cornerstone of a consistent playoff team.
And the influence of small below-MVP-level PGs on their team is still strong. Garland for CLE, Brunson for NYK, Young for ATL, Fox for SAC. Lowry a couple years ago. Kyrie Irving. Jrue Holiday (not exactly small but then neither is Scoot if you factor in strength). Those are all players that people would or should be fine with as their #2 pick on average. And most of them didn't project to be as good as Scoot.
Sure, the number of clear-cut MVP level players at his site is small. But frankly, that's the case for every single archetype. These players are just rare in general. If you think Westbrook played probably never at an MVP level, Morant has no chance even with some improvement and you omit CP3 (perhaps by accident) – then the league currently has maybe a handful of MVP-level players, if that.

yea, that's an odd take. before the last 4 years where it's been Giannis/Jokic twice, we had Steph twice, Harden, Westbrook, Rose and Nash twice in the previous 15 years. the other years it was Kobe, LeBron, KD and Dirk. and if you roll it back a few yrs before that we had Iverson in 2001. there were also a few years where you could've made a legit argument for Cp3 to take it.
you can say this about any of the archetypes today. how many bigs outside Jokic/Giannis/Embiid are MVP worthy today? how many wings outside LeBron, Luka and Tatum are MVP worthy today?

Yeah, and even Embiid, LeBron and Tatum are fringe cases if you don't think peak Westbrook or CP3 were MVP-level players.

He probably will put up amazing stats but you won’t win a championship with a guy like him. JMO.

With him on the team, period – or with him as the clear-cut best player?

For me, it's a philosophical thing. I'm well aware he's a good defender and good mid range shooter but he can't shoot the 3 and I don't think you can win with a guard who will take the shots he will take in the pros.

The problem is that he's going to be a high pick, so in his head he will think that he should be taking close to 20 shots per game. He might become a decent floor raiser, but his teams ceilings will be completely capped.

Re: Scoot Henderson
any characterization that Scoot shoots too much is hilarious and a hallmark of someone that actually hasn't seen him play, he shoots less than 14 attempts a pop right now in the GL in 30 mins, even in HS he wasn't a guy that would take too many shots even when he was clearly the top dog on his teams.
some of yall need to bow out and watch some games before giving your opinions.

When’s the last time a team has won a championship or reached the finals with a lead guard like that though?

a lead guard like what?
Smart was the lead guard for Boston's finals team last year, Cp3 was the lead guard for Phoenix's finals team, Jrue for Milwaukee's...I'm confused.
