Is Fred VanFleet still on the agenda?

Post#1 » by MasterGMer » Fri Mar 3, 2023 5:16 am

There were reports Magic was very very interested in Signing potential FA FVV in the summer.

Quite surprisingly, our PG duo (Fultz and Cole) has scored 49 points on the Bucks Wednesday night. Both were sensational. If they keep playing like this, I really do not know if we should trade or sign someone else

Luckily, we have time. The regular season is coming to an end in about a month or so. We have enough time to evaluate our guard rotation.

First of all, Fultz has been having his best season so far. He is averaging 16 ppg while shooting over 50%. His change of pace and attack in transition really boosted our chance at Milwaukee. We tried, but we fell short

Cole is a perfect sixth man for this young Magic team. His problem is consistency. He only had 2 points at New Orleans, if I am not mistaken. And then 28 points at the Bucks

To finish this rebuild, we need a star! I am not so sure FVV could do it, but in my opinion, he is a perfect fit next to Franz and Paolo. He can play both guard positions while having a very good 3pt shooting.

Milwaukee game taught us one thing: Spacing and hitting 3s. Giannis kept finding open man to shoot 3s. If we want to become a championship team, we need 3 point shooting. But this FO seems not to like to stress that area.

Or we could go another route: Trade this year's picks and assets to get a star like Bradley Beal or SGA. It is not likely to happen, but it could.

Even though I am not an expert in this, FVV sounds very intriguing!

VanVleet does not have the PnR game of Fultz, so he would be the off-ball guard. If Orlando believes that Fultz and VanVleet can guard opponent backcourt tandems at a high level, switch ing each other, then signing him makes enormous sense.

If this is the plan, the Orlando would need to trade Suggs for whatever they can get. And then use the rookies to fill the bench.

Our 2023/24 Orlando Magic thus is:

Fultz/Anthony/some G-leaguer
VanVleet/some rookie
F-Wagner/Bol/Okeke
Banchero/Isaac/some rookie
Carter/M-Wagner/some vet

I really like the tone of that team.

Pick and Roll Ball Handler

VanVleet: 73.4 percentile
Fultz: 50.4 percentile

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shed whatever salaries we need and give Kyrie $50M+. Or trade our 2 1sts + assets to get Brandon Miller. Or even better, get em both.

PG Kyrie Irving
SG Brandon Miller
SF Franz Wagner
PF Paolo Banchero
C Wendell Carter Jr

Holy crap, Kyrie Irving is only 30.

How often does a future Hall of Fame in his presumed prime enter the real FA market. This is interesting.

He's having the worst season of his career, which will help negotiate a deal. If you did give him 4 years, $120M, It would likely be a descending deal where his last season is around $27M.

It's probably more attractive to get $33M next season in a descending deal rather than a deal starting at $27M.

If the Magic traded Markelle for Vanvleet and offered him a 5th year team option, that would be a nicer deal for us. Something like 5 years $145M, with the final year being $25M.

I'm all aboard the FVV train. My expectations for him would be to play at a borderline all-star level across his new contract.

I'll go on record as being a pro backcourt blowup fanboy. Out with Fultz, Cole, and Harris, in with FVV, Keyonte, and Houstan.

I think it's as simple as sign FVV - let harris walk. Keep Bol but upgrade his minutes with a lights out shooter.

The Magic *can* sign Fred VanVleet without cutting Markelle Fultz loose if they're so inclined. I'm just not sure if that's the route they should go.

To add, I am also on record at thinking the SG core need a total revamp top to bottom. And that I would see VanVleet as a SG in Orlando.

FVV + Harris is the best realistic backcourt we can construct for next year. Harris stats will raise with more competent ball handlers (FVV plus more experience fot Franz and Paolo)
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

I don't want van Vleet and i want Fultz traded.

I want Suggs as starter guard 36 min a night, ball in his hands and in Banchero ones all the time.

I am torn on Suggs. On defense he looks top tier. Like wow. Almost every defensive stop/turnover for us he is involved. He can truly be great on the defensive end. BUT offensively he looks terrible to me. I understand he's not the top option for us on the court but he looks like he is going 100mph and can't shoot. I am optimistic he can improve but I can't imagine him being the starter especially if Fultz is still here.

I'm not looking for nicer deals. I'm looking for STARS who want to join our up and coming STARS.

He's gonna love Dallas and Cuban will pay up so I doubt he's going anywhere anyways.

Dame keeps talking like he wants to stay, but I bet we have a package that would temp Portland. 3 1sts (2 this year + DEN pick) and any combination of Markelle, Suggs, Anthony, Harris, Okeke, Houstan.

FVV is shooting 33% from 3 this year. Pretty much a chucker. For twice the price of Harris, I dunno about that. If anything, Neither are the option.

Option 2 I guess…

But only if Fultz is traded.

FVV, Cole
xxx, Suggs/Houstan
Franz, xxx/Houstan
Paolo, JI/Bol
Carter, JI/Mo

I just hate that I know Orlando will go with option #1 considering that’s the only way they land free agents, by massively overpaying guys with 1 good contract left.

..

If FVV is here, he's definitely pushing Suggs aside to 6th man max upside. I wish Suggs would finish out the year and show signs that he could be an offensive force and the future at SG, but it seems every shot he takes is a prayer... and every drive that he takes is a gasp that he won't lose the ball.
