It really depends on whether the extra attention leads to a course correction.

Apparently the Grizzlies org has known about these issues for at least a year now so I really wonder if they even tried confronting Ja about it and especially after the Pacers incident you would think they would tell Ja and his crew to tamp it down?

After the Wizards fiasco with Javaris Crittendon and Gilbert Arenas no NBA player should be casually carrying around gun for use in intimidation, Adam Silver has really failed in keeping the players in line.

Has absolutely nothing to do with Silver.

No doubt his agent, the Griz FO, the NBPA, the NBA, and his Nike rep have all been in his ear for a while but if he has rocks in his head then it just bounces off.

Looks like the marketing machine is already promoting a "redemption reset" so we will see if it both takes and sells.

How do you know where he grew up out of curiosity? I’m aware he has 2 parents etc but do we know for sure he wasn’t involved in a gang environment?

He grew up in Sumter sc , typical small town America

https://andscape.com/features/ja-morant-point-god-from-the-back-road/amp/

I grew up down the road in Columbia. I know a lot of people in Sumter. It's a small town but it's still very rough in many parts, even more rural areas of SC.

There is very little job opportunity, poor education, poverty, and alot of guns and drugs.

I admit, I was once into this street life. I didn't have a two parent household but was raised by my grandmother and had a mentally ill mother.

My grandmother did everything she could to educate me, expose me to culture and keep me on the right path, but the other people around me didn't have that. Fortunately, I was blessed to be smart, and finally decided to make my grandmother proud of me. I went to college, then law school, and when I did, I had leave that old circle behind. I did try to take it with me for a few years, and ended up suspended indefinitely from a college and banned from campus. I turned it around when my grandmother got me into another hbcu and then ended up going back and getting unbanned to complete law school.

It doesn't matter where he came from.Ja is now in a position where he has to leave that behind, and that includes the people that don't have to now walk in his shoes.

I think it's Important to be fair here and ask the fair questions now that's it's been a few days.
What state was he in? Open carry, Constitutional carry, Concealed carry, Concealed carry with a permit?

What city, county or town ship was he in?

Was he in fact in a night club or on private property?

If he was in A night club, was he on the floor or in a private room?

Does he have a carry permit?

Was the gun legal?

Does he have a carry permit, did he need one where he was?

Is it illegal to have a fire arm on Instagram live? Against policy?

Again I think his punishment should fit the crime if he actually committed one.

I am not trying to start a political conversation, I'm just saying I think these questions need asked.

This is a really excellent video. It's not so much the suspension but the message Stern sent to Carmelo that Ja could take some lessons from. If Morant wants to have a long and successful career he can't keep dragging his and the NBA's brand through this BS. Some of the coverage may perhaps be unfair but welcome to the world of multi billion dollar pro sports.

He's got to be smarter and play the game better. If that means making some tough decisions about the company he keeps then so be it. He hasn't done anything irredeemable yet but it feels like it might be slowly heading down that path.

The NBA is about making money and dumb **** like this from Ja jeopardises that. Hopefully he gets it after this suspension because it's gonna get a whole lot worse from here if he keeps screwing up.

The fact that we live in a country where a person can brandish a weapon in public - like some kind of toy - that is specifically designed to kill someone and people like you are asking, “Well, was it legal?” is the exact reason kids get shot to death in schools. It’s the fault of people like you who don’t step back and say, “Holy crap, that’s insane! Why do we allow this?!”

You are correct, and these answers are not very readily available people are just jumping to conclusions and pushing to judge this kid before you know exactly the extent of what he did or didn't do.

I don't recall such punishment -- but are you talking about the "Stop Snitchin'" video from when he was a very new in the league, or something else?

Carmelo got 15 games for that fight between Denver & New York back in 2006... link

I don’t think even the hardest supporter of gun rights would argue that just pulling it out in a club to show it off on IG is responsible gun ownership. Regardless of whether he’s broken a law, there’s nothing obviously a level of immaturity that warrants criticism of his character IMO.

The mods asked us not to go into a political debate here so I'll avoid that. But by people like me, you're referring to a trained, licensed, permitted and responsible gun owner and collector. I have a high level of understanding of fire arms and fire arm safety. Now I didn't touch on this, but on that point, this does make him look like a fool. He shouldn't be handling a fire arm in such a childish and irresponsible way. His actions break several things you learn on any day one of instruction. I find it distastful, inappropriate, problematic, and offensive. It's behavior that needs corrected. But we aren't talking about the court of public opinions. He shouldn't be punished and potentially loose millions of dollars cuz someone finds something offensive. A lot of factors are gonna determine if he actually broke any laws and even the reality of what he did, If he broke a law then it's a different story.

10000000% absolutely a slap in the face to responsible gun owners and gun safety practitioners. Behavior that should be frowned on and corrected. I just do like tossing around punishment when no laws were broken.
