Gary Trent Jr in the summer?
GTj has a Player Option at $17.2M and can surely get more on the open market. Where are you in terms of adding this 24 year old Dukie to the Magic?

Voted that we should save the money and draft a SG. Keyonte, Dick, NSJ, Ausar are all options. Sign FVV fo'sure tho

I don't know, but is he a whole lot better than Harris?

Younger, a bit better shooter, and is a bit more aggressive.

Better for us? I mean that’s 9 more shot attempts taken away from our current guys… is that what we want ?
I don’t want another Aaron Afflalo situation

Re: Gary Trent Jr in the summer?
What I like about Trent Jr...
He's young
-Just turned 24 so theoretically the Magic would be getting his prime years as opposed to FVV who's would be a little more post prime
He's an excellent shooter
-38% from 3PT on over 7.5 attempts per game the last three years is a really good volume + accuracy combo
He's not just a "camp behind the 3PT line and only attempt catch-and-shoot 3s" guy
-Just 51% of GTJ's shots have been threes over the last three seasons. Compare that to 68% of all of Gary Harris' shots are 3s this season.
He's extremely low turnover
-Trent has finished top of the league in lowest turnover percentage two of the last three years
He went to Duke
-He was college teammates with Carter so there could be some good chemistry vibes.
What I don't like about Trent Jr...
He's not a good defender according to some advanced metrics
-He's posted a negative defensive RAPTOR in each of the last three years
His teams have generally played better with him off the court than on it
-He's only posted a positive plus/minus per 100 once in his five year NBA career
He's not particularly willing passer
-He's so low turnover because he's posted single digit AST% (worse than Gary Harris) every year of his career. When he gets the ball in a position to shoot, a shot is going up
He's not that efficient from a TS% perspective
-This is because he's been low FT rate guy for most of his career. On the bright side, hit FT rate has trended up each of the last three seasons to a closer to, but still below average .226 this year and not surprisingly his TS% has followed suit.
I'd be more interested in VanVleet, but Trent Jr. would be a fine consolation prize. Especially if the Magic are dead set on retaining Markelle Fultz as their starting point guard.

If we pass him in free agency, is it that hard to find a future player like him in free agency? I would prefer to draft Nick Smith Jr. higher upside.

I mean Trent is pretty clearly the lesser of the two players right now. And it's not particularly close.
The only two things Trent has going for him over FVV is the fact he's 5 years younger which mean he may have his best basketball ahead of him, and the fact he's probably going to be cheaper (although not significantly) than FVV.
Fred's a vastly superior player though. Much better defensively. Much better and more willing passer. Much more impactful on winning. Much more versatile offensively.
I can see wanting Trent Jr more if you expect Fred's game to age poorly. But Trent's definitely not the better player.

The Magic will take a combo guard high. Not interested in either FVV or GTJ. Tactically maybe better with either, strategically much worse.

Selfish chucker with bad defense and attitude issues..... of course he will fit here.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Re: Gary Trent Jr in the summer?
My biggest concern is that you'd have to overpay to sign him. His camp will get every penny they can. I remember him turning down an extension with Portland because it was too low.
I'm thinking he's going to be in the $100M range, and currently, he's not a starter on a mediocre team.
I'm leaning towards drafting George or Nick Smith Jr. and giving them a clear runway.

thats why i would rather have FVV and then draft a SG like George or Smith. they would have a reliable PG running the show to help them.

Re: Gary Trent Jr in the summer?
I'd be happy to have him here, but expect he'll get badly overpaid like so many snipers before him...there wasn't a choice for "Pay him a reasonable amount and hope nobody else pays him more than, say $18m"
It's hard to steal UFA's these days, without a real desire to move to a specific place (like Brunson) or gross overpayment. FVV would be worth a big $$$ move. I like GTJ, but he's not going to revolutionize a team's offense to the degree his salary will impact their cap, IMO. We're not really built for a favorable sign and trade either...unless it's Isaac or Fultz (both of whom I don't think would appeal to TOR)

Not only do I like Trent's game over VanVleet's game, Trent is a much better fit for this team as constructed.

Excellent thoughts!
For me my main concern is that historically he has not scored more than the player defending him and thus he is a neutral asset player. In that vibe, Trent really reminds me of Dennis Scott and his role for the Magic back when.
Still: Trent's game is likely to create space for F-Wagner and Banchero. And all management decisions moving forward must only be about maximising those two.,
If Trent costs 25M a year for 4 years, so be it. Orlando can afford if and he is a MASSIVE upgrade over G-Harris anyhow.
