MIP who isn't close to all star

Post#1 » by durantbird » Tue Mar 7, 2023 5:14 pm

Some of the candidates for MIP this year are SGA, Markkanen, Brunson, Haliburton. But they are all All Stars or All Star caliber.

Who do you consider the most improved player who isn't really All Star caliber?

DiVencenzo is playing a ton better than last year, but he may fit more into a "comeback player" archetype than most improved

Kevin Huerter seems to have found a nice spot for himself with the Kings after being in and out of the starting line-up for the Hawks the last few years.

I actually think the narrative has overrated Huerter a little. He started the season blazing hot for the first month or so, and has really heated up recently, but between then and now, I'd say he's varied from about as good as he was with Atlanta to worse at times. The narrative seems to be that he's the clear third best player on the Kings when really that has changed every few weeks throughout the season.

Claxton comes to mind.

Aaron Gordon. He's worked himself into exactly the kind of player needed alongside Jokic and as a result has become devastatingly effective. It's been a two-stage process, beginning last season but really emerging this season. Gordon has become a top-10 PF while receiving practically no fanfare since arriving in Denver.

Easily one of the most underrated players in the league

Well, that's an interesting team:

Claxon
Gordon/McDaniels
Kuzma
Huerter/Okogie
Quickley/Divincenzo

I think I'd go with Gordon, followed by Claxton, then Huerter.

Gordon and Claxton are highly underrated players but I don't think "not close to All-star" applies to them. Gordon has a +5.2 EPM and +2.2 LEBRON, while Claxton is sitting just under +4 in both stats. They could've been, and probably should've been, All-stars this season.
