Just heard on 790 The Ticket in south florida that ESPN has just reported that John Schuerholtz has stepped down. Has anyone else heard this and can confirm this? :-?

edit:

it's true.

UPDATE

this is kinda bizzare...

Now it seems that Schuerholtz is NOT quitting but moving over to be team president. Wren will be the GM of the Braves. :o

This is shocking. I think John has been thinking of an exit plan and with a new ownership group in town, I think he wanted to make sure his guy (Wren) got the job. Too bad they didn't do this before Dayton Moore got away, but Wren is still an excellent candidate.

I'd like to say I'm shocked, but I'm not, because I have my doubts about the type of money this ownership plans to spend. At one point this year they said they plan to be as active as Boston and a week ago I read that they only plan to increase the team payroll by a few million.

Here is a little background on him:

Former assistant gm of the marlins
Former vice president of the marlins (was vp when they won the series)
Former GM of the orioles
Top aide to John.

I think he will do better as a gm this time. The Braves have a good team already and with John and Bobby still on board he won't have to run the team by himself. I would have loved to have Dayton but he will do just fine.

The good and bad moves of Schuerholz era

THE BEST

1. Fred McGriff: On July 18, 1993, Schuerholz brought the first baseman to the Braves in a trade with San Diego for minor leaguers Donnie Elliot, Vincent Moore and Melvin Nieves. The Braves go on to win the NL West by one game as McGriff had 19 homers and 55 RBIs in 68 games. McGriff was a three-time All-Star with the Braves.

THE WORST

1. David Justice: After being a Braves outfield fixture, helping the team win the 1995 World Series with a Game 6 homer, Justice was traded to Cleveland, along with Marquis Grissom, for Alan Embree and Kenny Lofton on March 25, 1997. Justice went on to play in the World Series for Cleveland and the New York Yankees. "When I was traded, it was like I was being taken away from my family," Justice said earlier this year when he was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame.
