Fringe/Youth - Pick One

Post#1 » by fatlever » Sun Mar 12, 2023 10:10 pm

If you had to choose only one of our young/fringe guys to have on the roster for next four years, who are you choosing?

James Bouknight
Theo Maledon
JT Thor
Bryce McGowens
Kai Jones
Nick Richards
Svi Mykhailiuk

Are you playing it safe with Nick or swinging for the fences with Kai? Betting on Bouk to wake up or Bryce to bulk up? Thor to learn to shoot or take the better shooter in Svi? Or lock in a 3rd string PG with Theo.

Nick

Bryce

Kai
Theo
Thor

Svi
Bouk

In terms of position and tiers.

Last year or so has taken me from Bouk needs a chance to he probably doesn't need to be in the NBA.

Nick has established himself as a very good backup who can start if need-be. That's extremely valuable IMO and speaks positively towards his development. His minutes have been jerked around a bit and he's never seemed to have a bad attitude. I wouldn't say he's an "integral" piece of the team, but him and Mark have shored up the C spot for the foreseeable future.

Nick isn't really a fringe player IMO. As long as this season wasn't a contract year fluke, he's a top 5 backup C or a lower end starter. He's going to be 26 next season, so he isn't that young either.

As for the rest, Bryce -> Kai -> Thor -> Svi -> Theo -> ____ -> Bouk

Richards and McGowens are on a tier above everyone else. Then all the rest, except Bouknight, who is at least one tier below everyone else.

Richards and McGowens are the only two I had to even debate, but I went with Richards as he has an elite skill as a rim protector and good offensive rebounder. He's also reasonably mobile and has decent lateral quickness for a big. He's also proven he's at least an NBA rotation player.

McGowens is promising but hasn't fully proven himself yet.

nick is a layup. he will be a solid 2nd/3rd string center for next 5 years. unless he starts making 3s, i don't see much more upside. based on how depleted our depth is, i'll take the sure backup over any of the upside remaining.

nick
bryce
kai
theo
svi
thor
bouk

Nick is only 20 months or so older than Oubre which is wild.

Bryce and it's not close.

Bryce
Kai, Theo, Thor (If Thor can get a consistent jump shot, he'd be a solid 3 n D, thats definitely possible)
Svi

I might actually pick Thor. Dude is just 20 years old and I think is a plus defender already. Has fantastic size.

His offense and aggressiveness will come, and if it does he's an ideal 3 & D.

McGowens and Thor at the top, then Nick, then Kai, then everyone else.

for purposes of the vote I went with McGowens

He is only 20, and at 6'7 could be a terrific wing alongside Lamelo; I think he's got the highest Alpha Dog potential of those listed; if he can add the requisite strength McGowens upside seems to be as a starter

I didn't vote for Nick because how is he considered young? Obviously he is the best.

Among actual fringe/youth it's McGowens for me. His ceiling is Middleton lite, imo, baseline expectation is fringe starter great reserve. I love that he isn't a ball-stopper and competes on defense, he's only going to gain confidence with experience.

Next up is Thor. Already a plus defender and he's still just a baby. By all accounts he's a hard worker with a great attitude. I'd bet on him over anyone other than McGowens just on measurable traits and the fact he defends.

It was supposed to be young or fringe (not young and fringe)... I lumped them together. But it wasn't clear in my original post. My bad.

Richards is the best right now. I think the future is bright for Svi Mykhailiuk. He has skills and BBIQ.

I wouldn’t count Nick in this group after this season, so I’d say Kai because of his athletic abilities. If he can get coached up and play more under control, he could be really good.

McGowens is the other one for me. It was tough to not pick him. He’s got NBA smoothness already

Probably would take the 34th pick over all of them right now.
