What would you give for Jaylen Brown?

Post#1 » by Skin » Fri Mar 24, 2023 6:00 pm

"We'll see how they feel about me over time and I feel about them over time. Hopefully, whatever it is, it makes sense. But I will stay where I'm wanted. I will stay where I'm needed and treated correct."

Boston Celtics guard/forward Jaylen Brown, on his future with the team, via The Ringer

Where there's smoke, there's fire. We talk bout superstars not being available, but it ALWAYS happens. Here we go. Extension eligible this offseason. If he doesn't get his Supermax, he'll be disgruntled. Do you think he's worth it? Does he fill a need? If so, what would you give up?

A lot! Superstar potential. 2-way player. Physical specimen. Scores inside and out at an elite level...even playing next to a league leading scorer. Absolute beast at SG.

Max deal no question...hopefully (for us) he doesn't qualify for a SuperMax - which would keep him in BOS (as intended).

Do we have enough cap space for his super max?

I noticed this story the other day when it was in the wiretap and I’m surprised nobody has mentioned it before. Surely Boston will offer him a max extension without question, and a supermax if he becomes eligible. But I think Brown is still hurt from all the trade rumours last season, and possibly other internal politics we don’t know about.

I’d trade anything but Paolo and Franz for him. Unfortunately all of this will play out after our best value pieces become unavailable. Our 2 FRPs will have been picked and inked to deals, so their value will hinge on how they’re performing as rookies, and depending on when or if Brown becomes available they might not be tradeable.

Could Orlando do a sign and trade to get him? Sending out some contracts and absorb his max extension?

I'd trade anybody but Franz and Paolo to get him. He could be our Donovan Mitchell next season

I need to triple check this, but I don't believe the Magic can sign Brown to a supermax extension anyway.

That only exists for a player's existing team or if they're traded before the end of their first contract.

That wouldn't be the case for the Magic in either scenario.

If we acquired him via trade, could we still offer him more than other teams? What other teams would even have the cap space to sign him?

Id trade for him with an agreement in place that he will sign an extension with us. He’s definitely worth it . Not easy for us to get players of his caliber very easily.

I think Boston would make a trade to stay in contention though. A star for star trade

Right...the whole point of the SuperMax is to keep stars home. They'd have to give up a lot to leave. Also takes up a ton of BOS cap, when they'll have two.

Is it weird I don't want Jaylen Brown at all?

You can't offer supermax for player who isn't your own player and who doesn't fit into category eligiable for super max: experience with same team, allstar status / MVP / DPOY awards ect.

Only Celtics can give him supermax, but i think he can't even get one because he would not be eligiable.

"Be named to an All-NBA team in the most recent season or two in the last three seasons. Be named Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season or two in the last three seasons. Be named MVP in any of the three previous seasons."

So he has to make all nba team or win something to even get one.

On open market, as UFA,in 2024, Magic, much like any other team can offer him 4 years , 30% of current cap space max contract.
Celtics can offer him 5 years.

And-1

If Brown makes an All-NBA team, he will sign a supermax with Boston. If he does not, then he will play out a season to "test the market". At that point, Orlando has the same max deal to offer as every other team; and the Magic would still probably need a SnT deal so that Brown could get the extra Boston-year tagged on.

So: is Brown worth a normal-Max contract AND a bunch of young assets/draft picks? Hmm.

I’ll be surprised if in the next 12 months our front office doesn’t push in our chips for one of: Luka, Brown, or Bane. Brown is already disgruntled, the other two could be shortly behind depending how their playoff runs go.

I’ll be stunned if Brown doesn’t make the all-NBA 3rd team. So he’ll be Supermax eligible in Boston. But I think he’s tired of the Celtics yanking him around in trade rumors for many years now.

I’d like to know when factoring taxes what a Celtics supermax contract looks like compared to a Magic max considering our tax advantages.

Jaylen Brown would certainly be a major coup for the Magic, and put them into contender status. But, we’re on course to be pretty good in the next couple years organically anyway, so I’d stay on our current track.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

How does an acquisition of Brown impact the future roles of Franz and Paolo? Their job satisfaction?

Positively I would think. Brown slots in at SG. He becomes our leading scorer next season as Paolo and Franz develop consistency.

I'd go all in on Brown. Pretty much anything except Banchero and Wagner. If the 2 lottery picks fall out of the top 3, I'd probably gladly put both on the table for Brown.

Eh, the Boston core is at risk precisely because of chemistry issues related to pecking order. Team building seems a bit sensitive and we have a clear alpha in Paolo. I don't think it makes sense from this perspective to bring in a star.

I think Boston is going to agree with a deal with Brown. He is just too much to give up. But if Boston can get back some valuable pieces, we might have a chance. But we are going to give up a lot
