You can't criticize a guy for trying to get paid as much as he possibly can.

Criticize Ted & Tommy instead: they had no reason to give him the contract they did.

"Tell you what, Brad -- show me the best offer you can get out there, & I'll beat it by $5m a year & give you an extra year too."

What does this team look like if Brad got a 5 year 35 a year deal no kicker or NTC and a team option in the last year?

Exactly! That's why PIF made the point that it's bizarre to criticize Beal just because he got all the money he could in his last contract.

Obviously, the big difference between Beal at $35M a year (without a no-trade clause) and Beal at $50M a year (and a NTC) is his tradability. If he was making $35M, I think swapping him straight up for Jalen Brown might be on the table. Or maybe we could trade him to Orlando for a high pick or two. But now we're into the realm of things we should be blaming Sheppard/Leonsis for, not Beal himself.

But what you can blame him for is neither actually living up to that contract or trying to live up to that contract. It's not complicated.

Certain things are expected from a guy handed a contract like that. With Beal, you have a guy who is already talking about how he has to be selfish mid-season right before the home stretch after the All-Star break and that no other realistic destination could offer him anything in the first year of his contract. I mean, call Tommy and Ted stupid for handing him that contract, but talk about ungrateful to act like that when they have gone out of their way to take care of you. People can both think the organization (that's a cute euphemism) were dumb for giving him the contract and that he could also do his best to live up to the contract, which he doesn't.

This whole you can't blame Beal because he got paid is not why most fans don't like or complain about Beal, it's everything else. The lack of leadership after being here a decade plus, the lack of self awareness and accountability, the consistent trickle of chirps to the media either himself or through his affiliates, being available, bitching to refs while his team is getting smoked on the fast break, understanding basic concepts on defense (no one expects him to be a savant, but trying is nice), trying to make the right play in a game instead of trying to make it about himself. The list goes on.

I don't see it, man. Through the first half of this season, Beal was having what was w/o a doubt a career year. Playing at a level above any previous year.

He's slipped considerably, but that's not evidence that he's failing to try!

Honestly, & without wanting it to be an argument, I don't buy one bit of this. & I don't think it's true, & even if it were true, I don't think it matters.

Every player -- whether on a super-max or a vet-minimum contract -- owes his team the exact same thing: to come out & compete: to do his best. YMMV, & you have a right to your opinion.

I 100% agree with this part. Brad's contract doesn't make him somehow more responsible for the team's success or failure than any other player.

But having said that, I think you have to acknowledge that some of the stuff that Crazy sees is real. Brad has developed a bunch of the annoying habits of an entitled NBA star --- without really being a star! He often complains to referees about no-calls instead of getting back on defense. He takes possessions off on defense. He dominates the ball in late game situations. He commits careless turnovers. These are legitimate reasons to criticize him!

Certainly, a lot of this is subjective, and not everyone is going to see the same things in Brad's behavior or interpret them in the same light. From a strictly objective standpoint, Brad is playing well on offense this year and mediocre on defense. But its the non-objective part of his game that is wearing on me, and other fans. I say this as someone who had been a fan of Brad since his first game! I still appreciate the fact that Brad is a good guy, a hard worker, and by all accounts a grounded family man. But damn, I'm getting tired of his act on the court. As you say, YMMV.

Bottom line, its a sad situation. And it stems from the organizational dysfunction that has existed with the Wizards for as long as I can remember. We just can't have nice Wizards things.

"No knuckleheads. Beal must be traded."

Jokes aside, unless there's more to the story, I suspect this won't amount to much. Still: Beal has to be smarter than this.

Yo keynote, love your sig. One of my favorite song lines…especially the Joe Sample/Lalah Hathaway version.

What a pussy for calling the cops. I'm sorry if you're going to jaw at guy like that you get what you get. Beal knocked the hat off his head cuz he shot his mouth off and he cries battery, calls the cops and is probably going to sue. What a pussy ass bitch. Good for Beal on that one. I stand by him here.

In recent weeks I've heard other NBA players complain about the impact of gambling on the game they play. Lately, there always seems to be fans seated near me at Cap One who are far more concerned about the point spread than the outcome of the game.

At least once college coach (Anthony Grant at Dayton) has publicly complained about bettors who have threatened or sent abusive messages to his players.

Ted, perhaps more than any other owner is heavily invested in monetizing the upside of NBA gambling. I'm curious as to how he's reacting to this.
