If ________ wins a ring this year, they're now top ____ all time

Post#1 » by bigboi » Thu Mar 30, 2023 10:38 pm

Name a player that could significantly change their all time rankings by winning a ring this year.

For example, if Curry wins a ring this year then he's a top 5 player of all time. And if Giannis wins a ring this year then he's top 10-13 all time. If Jokic wins a ring this year then he's top 20 all time. List some of your examples.

Bird would have won 4 rings with that team, in this weak ass era of basketball.

Durant winning would jump him a lot I think

If Kristaps Porzingis wins a ring this year, it would catapult him to #1 in the hearts of Wizards fans (at least those who don't really remember Wes Unseld).

I have Giannis, Jokic, Embiid, Harden, LeBron, AD, Butler, Durant and Curry all adding significant value to already Top 100 [impressive] careers with a ring this year.

Luka probably vaults into the Top 100 with a Ring this season and Gobert [if not already there] makes a strong case as well.

Players like Booker, Tatum, Sabonis and Mitchell all start getting serious discussions for Top Tier players in the league with rings in their mid-20s as "Top 10ish players in the NBA".

Curry winning another ring does not make him top 5 all time, that’s laughable lol. He just missed yet again a big chunk of games, and his peak has no real serious case for top 5 ever.

I sort of think you need to see someone do it before you can really say how much benefit they get. The Suns are probably loaded enough that KD could win a ring there as the second best player while putting up something like 25ppg on ok efficiency. If he did that and Booker was fmvp I don't think it really jumps him up that much combined with a rs in which he played in less than 50 games.

well, you’re entitled to your opinion. But Steph would be a top 5 player to me with another ring as well as dominant finals because he’d seal the deal as GOAT PG for me and Steph was just as dominant as Lebron in this era to me. If you disagree, oh well.

Why would it seal the deal against Magic?

If any given player wins a ring this year, they’re now top (same spot they would be without a ring but the same impact/production/skill-set) all time

That's the only correct answer.

One name that hasn't been mentioned yet is Chris Paul. Would it make any difference at all if he won a title as the third best player at the age of 38? A somewhat comparable case is Jason Kidd's title in 2011. I don't think much has changed for him after this title or do I remember that wrong?

sounds more like he'd seal the deal as your favorite point guard of all time, because winning one more ring doesn't change the fact that Magic Johnson was the better overall passer which is the key thing about the point guard position in every era, and better leader. Put the two of them on the same team and it's no question that Magic Johnson would be the top dog.

Just getting a ring doesn't mean much without context or else Patrick McCaw would have to be ranked above guys like Wilt and Hakeem on all-time lists. What matters is playing well and living up to or even exceeding expectations. For example Lauri leading the Jazz to a ring this season would be massive but would it really change his legacy that much more than if he took them to the WCF with the same level of play? In both cases expectations are exceeded individually and in a team context so the cherry on top of a ring would be nice but not the key reason for why Lauri would now be regarded significantly higher than before.

I think it only matters to actually win the ring for MVP level players who have yet to win a ring. Steph could win another 4 rings and it wouldn't really change anything because we know he's capable of that with a good enough team around him, the only factor here would be 4 extra seasons of presumably high level play. Jokic and Embiid are the clearest cases of guys who would benefit substantially from winning a ring because there are some doubts whether they could actually get it done, some of the younger guys like Luka and Tatum too but I feel like people still look at them as having more time.

Tatum’s had a good career so far, but he’s nowhere near top 60, ring or not.

The idea that Butler and Tatum are somehow equals on his list is pretty horrific.

RS - weak, but PO

1 champ
1 final
2 ECF

Around 100 PO games with good stats. Would be nice PO resume. But agree 50-60 too high for him.
