NBA MVP Discussion Thread 2022-23 (part 5 - The Final-er MVP Countdown!)
The end of the regular season is upon us and someone will soon be crowned MVP of the NBA's 2022-23 season!
Vote for 2 choices in the poll: Who you think WILL win the award and who you think SHOULD win the award. If it's the same player vote for him twice, obviously.
The choices have been narrowed down to the top 3 per betting odds, MVP Ladders, previous RGM polls, etc.
The poll is set up so you can change your vote(s) as often as you like.
Have fun and please don't attack people you disagree with. Debate the post but don't insult the poster. Thanks, good pals.

Jokic 48-19
Embiid 42-22
It's Jokic. Least help and close enough to Giannis.

A gentle reminder that y'all have atleast a month to thrash and hate on Embiid before the NBA announce that he won his first MVP. Just a little trivia, the last time a Sixer take the MVP they also made it to the NBA Finals beating the Bucks in the Conference Finals. The little dude who won that MVP also lead the league in scoring, kinda like Embiid the last 2 years.

Re: NBA MVP Discussion Thread 2022-23 (part 5 - The Final-er MVP Countdown!)
I feel like my pick should be set in stone now that we're at the end of the season but I'm actually more undecided than ever.
Most of the year I had Jokic as the clear best player in the league and MVP. But now I'm not convinced he's substantially better than the others and I guess I have a bit of voter fatigue. He's the worst defender of the top candidates and although that doesn't usually seem to matter as far as MVP goes I just struggle with giving 3 consecutive MVP awards to a player who only plays half the game.
I had switched my vote to Embiid for a while but then un-voted for him when he ducked that Nuggets game a week or so ago lol. I could be convinced he's the MVP but as of now I'm not convinced.
I'm honestly thinking I might split the difference and just go with Giannis. Best player on best team, has the stats and plays both ends of the court.
And if the C's were still in 1st place I'd probably be back to boring you guys with my Tatum stanning haha. His MVP campaign fizzled out when he and the team struggled a bit coming out of the all-star break, but he's back to being excellent and really does deserve to be in the conversation imo.
TLDR: shrug.

All these media members…just listening to how they talk now is like Embiid can do no wrong no matter how much they lose and his game hasn’t been as great.
This one win streak Philly had in the whole 82 game season overlooks everything else for him now?

I agree that it should be Jokic.
With that said, why is Gianni's second best player, Middleton, having played only 32 games all season long, averaging 15/4/5 on 43/31/90 is glossed over?
If Embiid's or Jokic's best teammate had played just 30 games, we would have been hearing it constantly all year long, being the reason they are the clear cut favorite over the other two. Instead he has had the most help out of the three somehow.
Anyway, I feel like Jokic deserves it over the other two this year. More games played, amazing stats and efficiency while having the 3rd best record in the league. He has been the regular season MVP this year even more than he was last year, which I would argue, should have gone to Embiid.

Maybe because even without him, Giannis still has a better #2 than any of the other MVP candidates in Jrue who’s actually been the 6th best player in the league by RAPM 22 spots ahead of Giannis and also has a center who’s one of the 2 frontrunners for DPOY? It’s like a rich guy complaining about how his boat’s been in the shop half the summer to someone whose car will barely get them to work.

You’d think he HAS to be slipping by now, wouldn’t you?
• 3-5 record in the last 8
• Ducked the showdown with Jokić
• Got dominated head to head by Giannis
• 4 straight games under 30 points
• 3 straight games with a game score under 20
• Has made 4 of his last 25 3-pointers
For a guy whose whole case seemed to be recency of what he’d done in the last 2 or 3 weeks 2 or 3 weeks ago, he’s been on a hell of a bad stretch. What’s it gonna take for him to slip? It’s gonna be an absolute travesty if he wins MVP.

Espn has their writers so far at 3 for Jokic 1 for Giannis and 1 for Embiid.

Jrue has missed 15 gms to Lopez though has missed only 2 the bucks as a team has missed a lot of gms with injuries so for them to have best record is really amazing!

Feeling and reality do not alwats match up
Jokić has been consistent and amazing all season long and you dont see that often. But bottom line is, no matter what he does there is a set of voters that wont give him 3 in a row. So from the start, voting is not going to be even. But that is what it is. I will not he surprised if Jokić does not play another game till playoffs. I also wouldnt be surprised if he plays 1 game, gets one assist shy of whats needed for tripple double average in 3rd quarter and sits without getting it as an ultimate "**** off" move to haters. Anywhom, hope he keeps improving. He needs to be more agressive occasionally.
Im pretty sure Embiid gets it. Been runner up before and has a media campaign going on for him to win it. Thats not to say he is not deserving. I think he is the best scorer in the league. Sad truth is, his playing style impacts his health. You never know if you will be in contention again so when you get a chance to go for an award like this, you take it. I actually hope he wins it too. His collective effort in the past 3 seasons should have been enough to yield one (I understand thats not how it works since there is competition as well, but whatever). And you can tell it means a lot for him.
Giannis is a warrior. Love that guy. He is not winning it for sure in my opinion but only because he missed too many games and cause he will probably sit out more. But dude is a machine. And humble so all people (outside of philly) love him (how dare that clown put that ledder in front of him
).
Honorable mention - i liked Tatum the entire season. I am also big proponent of not missing games to be an mvp. I personally would vote him cause he's available and him impact has been amazing. But oh well. We all know thats not happening.

I voted Jokic will win it, but Giannis should win it. Ever since he won his back to back MVP, we have to taken him and Bucks for granted. What Giannis Antetokounmpo is doing on both ends of the floor is f'ing unreal. This is Shaq like dominance, but with zero drama. I would have no problems with either of those winning the trophy.

Based on straw polls Gianni has zero chance to win. He'll likely get third.
If I had to guess I think Embiid may squeak out a really close win, but hard to say cause many voters weren't in those straw polls and have admitted to waiting until season's end to cast their ballot.
