For anyone in the DC area/potentially interested in traveling for some fun concerts, there's a legendary club in DC called the 9:30 Club (routinely rated as one of the best concert venues in the country) where many big acts first performed in DC (Dave Grohl talked about this at length recently). They moved to a new location in the 1990s and upgraded to a 1,200ish capacity venue, but beginning in May, they're opening up a replica of the original 9:30 Club to be called The Atlantis. Will hold ~450 people per concert and tickets will be sold via a lottery system for $44 per (max of 2 tickets per concert and you can enter for up to 12 concerts). Any concert you enter your name for will automatically be charged if you are selected, so don't enter unless you're prepared to actually buy the tickets, but it should be a very cool time.

Foo Fighters will be the inaugural concert on 5/30, but you can see the full list of 44 shows at the link below. Some really fun artists will be performing over the next few months such as Franz Ferdinand, Darius Rucker, Third Eye Blind, Bush, Gary Clark, etc.

Some pictures of the original club:

Still haven't seen these guys in concert but they own:

Andrew Belle's cover of Radiohead's "Let Down (not a fan of Sleeping at Last's First Part) is awesome...

These guys kick ass, more of a southern soul type vibe....

These guys are a little more electric pop (vocalist reminds me of the guy from Fine Young Cannibals), but they got me through some really dark times in the summer of 2020...

Im not a huge fan of country music, but this winter I watched Ken Burns “history of country music” and:

- I think I understand rock/pop better as a result
- It had some really fascinating stories within it (both inspirational and laugh out loud)
- I think I understand rural people better
- Emmy Lou Harris was sort of to country music what elon musk thinks he is to twitter
- Johnny Cash is a top 20 all time epic American

Each episode is categorized loosely by decades. It starts off luke warm. But the 70’s and 80’s and 90’s episodes are incredible.

Late 80s and 90s were the last times I could say I was into country. Looking forward to seeing those.

This is my favorite track (so far) from the new The National album. I'm in love.

I'm hit or miss on Ken Burns, but he does excel on research. Mostly, I feel his docs are carried by the talking heads he uses. For "History of Country Music" he kills it. Longtime Madisonian and pre-eminent country historian Bill Malone is used frequently, but the ones who really carry it are Rosanne Cash, Rhiannon Giddens and Marty Stuart. Each is incisive, a wealth of knowledge and engaging on camera. I like it a lot.

I don't know how exactly it happened but I think Marty Stuart was in my Spotify 100 last year. Twice probably.

I’m on an Oregon road trip with the family and we’ve been listening to lots of boygenius (among other things) but I hadn’t listened to this one yet. For a second I got upset because I thought they had released the album. 4/24. Phew.

Noted, and added to the family playlist.

100% agree on all accounts. It was powerful to see how much people like Emmy Lou Harris, Marty Stuart, etc love country and cared so deeply about lifting it out of its 1960’s homogenized sound (reinfusing bluegrass, etc). I loved how Willy Nelson and Waylon Jennings just quit Nashville and did their own thing.

Roseanne Cash IS incredible in that doc. She is before my time, so I did not realize how good she was on her own merit. Im sure her dad/name opened some doors for her, but she was a legitimate star and great songwriter. I loved the part where she explained her songwriting education was touring with her dad for a few years, him making her learn certain standards, etc. R Cash, M Stuart, V Gill, and D Yoakim all display deep knowledge and affection for songwriting and country history in the doc.

I agree Ken Burns stuff can get static/lifeless. The stuff with more video footage (baseball, country, etc) is much more watchable than the stuff with only still pictures (Civil War, Prohibition, National Parks, etc).

Wanted to highlight this right here. The Johnny Cash syllabus is GREAT.

Took the wife to this tonight and it was excellent. Quartet playing Queen songs and a few classical pieces at the St James Abbey downtown.

This popped on my Sirius a week or two ago. It is quite good. Luke Combs is a legit good singer. If he didn't look like they pulled him off of a farm in Edgerton, he would probably be able to be successful singing anything.

They've been running an ad for NF's new album on twitch for a while now.

I liked the clip of the song they played in the ad so I'm checking out the album now. I dont hate it. There's been a couple misses but overall, it's been a good listen.

As someone who stopped listening to these guys when Gontier left the band, this made me very happy.

I haven't checked this out. Did they touch on southern rock? Recently I was telling a friend I'm not really a country music guy but his argument was I actually kind of was because he considers bands like the Allman Brothers and Widespread Panic a subset of county. I get where he was coming from but to me they fall in the jam band/southern rock and an extension of the old Mississippi Delta blues which most rock artists stole from in the 60s.

Been on a widespread panic binge since then. I've always liked them but the more I listen the higher they climb my personal charts. Just so rich sound and such good vibes.
