Re: Is Moses Moody an NBA caliber player?
To the discussion about whether GSW's schemes are complex, IMO, they are the most complex in the league. Offensively, there is extraordinary movement which flows into some basic plays that Curry, Klay, Dray run...other players need to recognize through that movement where the play is going to originate, and not only not be in the way (Wiseman regular failure), but also to be in position to cut or receive a pass to knock down the open shot. Players like Moody sometimes see the play develop, other times not at all. Defensively, because GSW is relatively so small the need for early recognition of the need to rotate to provide help defense is paramount. If guys like Moody don't see where the assignment is early enough, opponents get too deep of position and its impossible to defend without fouling, or to defend at all. On any given play, even Curry might be required to defend a Robin Lopez and he can only do that by getting there early to deny possession or to make a play on the ball before a player like Lopez gathers and makes a play. It's split second decision making, but if the decision is made even a split second late, the defense won't get a stop. So yeah, I think it is complex, and I think the only way for guys like Moody to "get it" are to get more playing time to recognize real time his assignments.

Re: Is Moses Moody an NBA caliber player?
I think the notion that GSW schemes are that much more complicated than other NBA teams or that most prospects from major college programs can't adapt to it seems way overstated.
Curry and Klay aren't running from baseline to baseline as much as they used to 6-8 years ago and other teams are doing the same thing off pick and roll traps, having the center go down the lane on 4 on 3 off the trap of the primary ball handler, either kicking the ball out or finishing or lobbing to cutter from the corners.
Teams have copied this "system."
It's not that Moody isn't picking up things -- though he probably has a lot more to learn.
It's that he struggles to physically compete at times, not quick enough, not strong enough.
I think the coaching staff wants these young players to work hard in the offseason and add skills or improve in some way, as well as improve physically, whether adding muscle or improving their ball handling and shooting.
Moody didn't have a bad rookie season and in fact in the playoffs got some key minutes so his trend was up at the end of last season and playoffs.
Seemed like he started this season in the doghouse so there was something the coaches didn't like about his offseason. He certainly doesn't look better in any facet of his game or physical development compared to last season.
He's going to have to show something at the start of next training camp, some evidence that he improved in some way.

Re: Is Moses Moody an NBA caliber player?
Moody definitely has physical issues to overcome, but sometimes he just looks lost. Like you can see him bang into teammates on both sides of the ball not knowing where he should be. It's gotten marginally better lately, but it seems Kuminga has figured it out faster.
At the end of the day he isn't shooting well enough to convince Kerr to leave him out there. If he was shooting 40%+ he'd be getting a lot more minutes. But at 35%? Why bother? Shooting was supposed to be his one surefire NBA skill. But he basically just looks average.

Well he needs reps, needs a chance to get into rhythm.
PBJ is shooting 39% from 3 but somehow he's averaging more 3PA than Moody is, not by a lot, both are low volume at this point.
Yeah I've seen Curry wave off Moses a couple of times, to go to the weak side instead of bringing his defender to the side Curry wanted to attack.

He’ll be out of the rotation when GPII comes back but nice to see him out together a string of games where he doesn’t **** the bed.

He was okay against OKC. If he was an NBA caliber player, they would have won by 50.
This movie is like the Rocky Horror Picture Show where everyone knows all the lines.

Nice to see him have a really good game. I still believe he can develop into a solid starter level player (in the NBA, not in China
). This is why I don't understand Kerr's approach with him and Lamb. Lamb is OK for an end-of-bench guy, but he really isn't all that good and should be played over Moody. He doesn't win you any games either. So give a few months of consistent minutes to Moody and see him develop to a significantly superior player.
I hope that happens next season.

Not the development I expected of him this year, but he got the right attitude to figure it out.

Lamb’s hustle stole us possessions over the course of the regular season. He plays for loose balls at a higher intensity level than a lot of NBA guys do night to night in the regular season and that very well may have tipped the scales on a few games or at least in the aggregate. David Lee made an all star game by just out-hustling regular season lollygaggers but couldn’t stay on the court in the playoffs when everyone on the floor plays hard and in shorter rotations and games with stakes. The opponent lapses that “go yards” capitalize on just don’t occur often enough in the post season for their contributions to matter.
Kerr saw that with Lamb last night. Benched him the whole second half after every unit with lamb on the floor was in the negative. He gets it.

Lamb played in 5 lineups last night and went -8 -1 0 0 -2 in them. From what I can tell Kerr is mainly matching up Lamb with Kuminga minutes because the lineups with Kuminga that have performed best so far this season also had Lamb on them.

I'm always a bit back and forth on these kind of hustle plays... If you manage to get the ball it's of course great. If you don't, chances are high that you've taken yourself out of the play entirely and the team (defense) has to scramble. But yeah, I don't fully disagree, Lamb played a solid role given the expectations. I've also voiced that he deserves a regular contract which he finally got.
But his limitations are blatantly obvious. Athletically he's really underwhelming and his defense is bad, even with the hustle. Developing Moody better with some of these minutes would have done wonders for this team, certainly more than (maybe) winning another game or two.
Hopefully, the OKC game was now really the start of a different approach from Kerr.

Lamb helps JK a lot since he can play a big spot and provide some type of spacing. All our other bigs really don't open up the paint for JK. Lamb also is a better help defender so he can rotate and recover. That's really his biggest asset right now is that he's able to guard 1-5 at an avg level and knows when to help and recover.

It will work better with Wiggins. But I have JK on my list of guys who absolutely don’t have to be on the floor in playoff games if they aren’t producing. We gave him a short leash all season, no reason for it to be longer now. I just want Lamb on a shorter leash. He really has been way out of sync with the defense lately and not hitting shots so the extra possessions are being given back elsewhere.
If Wiggins hadn’t come back then we are forced into playing one of Lamb or JK pretty much regardless of how they perform. Lately, JK’s performances trended up while Lambs trended down.but irregardlessly, for the playoffs they are change of pace options and maybe we can throw Moody into that mix too. Not features. Wiggins gets all their minutes unless they show out.

Definitely still seeing plenty of defensive lapses with Moody, but the increased aggressiveness on the boards is very welcome. It's something in his power to do, and it sounds like he just realized it (even mentioned that in the presser).

Re: Is Moses Moody an NBA caliber player?
There was one play where he had his hands on a rebound but had it wrestled away from him.
Then later where he took a rebound away from a Thunder player, then dunked it.
He definitely needs to play more ferociously and he still needs grown man strength.
Strength still is a good attribute for defenders. Look at someone like Tucker or Draymond. They make up for lack of size and quickness with strength, subtly redirecting.
A lot of times, he ends up on his butt. So does Poole, a lot. Strength helps with the balance issues, having leverage when defending.
Moody has length so he wouldn't be reliant on strength only but it's something that should be an offseason goal.
He's young but his rookie deal comes up for renewal in a couple of seasons so he has to show improvement over that time. First thing is to earn more minutes.
He doesn't have forever, hope he approaches that with more urgency, as he must the minutes he gets.

Re: Is Moses Moody an NBA caliber player?
Moody is such an intriguing case, he's a guy that I thought would actually even a high NBA floor (lower ceiling) with AT LEAST a 3/D baseline as an NBA player
he was an instant impact freshmen in a tough/athletic conference in the SEC, all his peripherals projected well, good FT rate, good FT%, 36% from 3 on over 5 attempts per, good rebounder for his age, efficient on every level on the court, high BPM, high Net Rating, wasn't a high usage guy but still found a lot of ways to impact the game like boxing out, rebounding, spotting up.
and on top of it solid physical profile, the hips are obviously a bit stiff and footspeed is below average, but he's a solid 6-6 with a legitimate 7ft+ w/s with decent strength/core.
projected well into this system, so it wasn't a Wiseman situation where it was obvious he'd be a bad fit here. so it's still weird to me how he just hasn't been better tbh...but that's why they don't call it an exact science.
i still tho believe Kerr didn't do a great job of managing his development. some dudes just needs to out there and play, they require a lot of ramping up and getting used to the speed of the game, so the last couple of seasons where he would play in 1 game 10 mins then be a DNP for the next 3 without a defined role or any type of momentum game to go game didn't do him any favors.
this a pick I just would never fault Myers/FO for just because it made all the sense in the world regardless of outcome.

He’s an NBA player, but he’s limited. He will have to find a niche on teams where the parts fit together to accommodate his game, similar to how having GP2 makes Poole look better. His main value is his rebounding, everything else is average to below average which makes him a journeyman career.
