Hawks Open to Trading Trae Young

Post#1 » by orthoman » Mon Apr 10, 2023 10:05 pm

In the news today...

I would trade everyone, including draft picks, except.

Paolo
Franz
WCJ
Fultz
Suggs
Cole

Even in a vacuum, I wouldn’t trade Franz or Paolo for Trae. I would offer less for Trae than I would for Anthony Edwards.

Trae Young is an absolute stud. He's in that Damian Lillard, Deron Williams archetype, a high-scoring, elite playmaking point guard.

Great offense except for turnovers. Very poor defense.

I think he'd fit great with Paolo and Franz. Turnovers would be an issue as its a weakness for Franz and Paolo too, but Trae is still young and can improve there.

This team's defense would fall off a cliff and the offense would just stick to Trey's hands with no ball movement.

This wouldn't be a move that would make this team better.

I am not a Trae Young fan. I do not believe you can build a winning team around Trae Young.

Now, given we have Paolo in place you could talk me into a place where we are building around Paolo with Young as the #2 and Franz and the 2b / 3. Alright, I can be talked into. The kid can shoot.

A potential core of Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, and Trae Young presents a promising mix of talent and versatility. This trio could form a strong foundation for a team, as they each bring different strengths and skill sets to the table. Here's an analysis of how they might complement each other on the court:

Scoring and playmaking: Trae Young is an elite scorer and playmaker who can create opportunities for both himself and his teammates. His ability to generate points and assists will be crucial in setting up plays and keeping the offense flowing. Additionally, Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero are versatile scorers who can contribute from various spots on the floor. Franz is particularly effective as a mid-range shooter, while Paolo excels at drawing fouls and scoring inside.

Rebounding: Paolo Banchero is an excellent rebounder, and his presence on the court will help secure both offensive and defensive boards. Franz Wagner also has a decent rebounding ability, while Trae Young's rebounding is average for a point guard. This rebounding mix can provide the team with solid support on both ends of the floor.

Defense: Defensively, this core has some room for improvement. While Franz Wagner shows potential with a decent defensive box plus-minus and a respectable steal percentile, Trae Young's defense is a weak point in his game. Paolo Banchero, on the other hand, has shown good shot-blocking and stealing abilities, but his overall defensive impact could be better. If this core can develop their defensive skills and find the right balance, they could provide a more formidable presence on the court.

Ball control: One area of concern for this core is their ball control. Both Wagner and Banchero struggle with committing bad passes and losing the ball, while Young also has a high rate of committing bad passes. Improving their ball control and decision-making will be crucial to minimizing turnovers and maximizing offensive efficiency.

Youth and potential: This core consists of young players with significant potential for growth. Trae Young, at 24, is already an established offensive force in the league, while 21-year-old Wagner and 20-year-old Banchero are just beginning to show their potential. As these players continue to develop and gain experience, they have the opportunity to become a dominant force in the league.

In conclusion, the core of Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, and Trae Young presents a promising blend of scoring, playmaking, and rebounding abilities, with room for growth in their defensive skills and ball control. As these players continue to develop and learn to complement each other's strengths, they could form a formidable team nucleus with the potential for long-term success.

Trae Young, as talented as he is, it’s hard to justify trading for him at this current time. The Magic are growing the right way and getting a guy like Young, who is completely ball dominant would hurt the rest of the teams progress, in fact I’d fear major regression from Paolo and Franz among others. I see the same problem with a guy like Kyrie. At this point in time I’d prioritize the 2 spot rather than the point. I think our 3 guys are really doing great there.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

Atlanta Hawks last three years...

20-21: 9th in ORTG
21-22: 2nd in ORTG
22-23: 7th in ORTG

This idea that Trae Young would somehow cause *regression* for this franchise offensively when he's one of the 10 best individual offensive players in the entire NBA doesn't make sense to me.

It's totally fine if you don't like his defense or his attitude or his leadership ability. But his teams have had zero problems scoring points at a high level.

Trae is a legit all-star talent but he’s not remotely close to Dame IMO.

Trae could actually work in lineup with WCJ, Paolo, Franz and Harris/Suggs. His defense would be more problem in playoffs, but all those guys can switch to guards in short spurt.

Dame 2016 (25 yo) and Deron 2011 (26 yo) come up as comps for him.

Counting Stats
Dame 25/4/7 on 42/38/89 shooting
Deron 20/4/10 on 44/33/85 shooting
Young 26/3/10 on 43/34/89 shooting

Advanced Stats
PER | WS/48 | OBPM | DBPM | VORP
Dame 22.2 | .165 | 5.7 | -1.3 | 4.3
Deron 21.1 | .142 | 4.3 | -1.3 | 3.1
Young 22.0 | .126 | 5.3 | -2.0 | 3.4

I'm less concerned about the player than the cost. Don't bet the farm on one-way players that can be exploited in the playoffs. You're just setting yourself up for misery.

That’s funny…Trae Young’s your second guy off the bench? What’s Fultz’ job description after we get Trae?

At the risk of inserting my own foot in my mouth, without looking it up…I’m going to guess Trae racks up 2x our present PG’s # of assists. Admittedly, Fultz is a much better dunker.

Fool's gold. And not the Otis Smith kind.

Edit: "Fool's gold if there was." was original post. Pressed "Submit" before I was ready.

Tempting, I also worry about his terrible defense and his high usage rendering Paolo, Franz, Fultz less effective.

But if we can keep Franz and Paolo we would have to make this trade and trust the coaching staff to make it work defensively and offensively.

We would probably lead the league in free throw attempts between Paolo and Trae.

Trae is not quite Luka and more close to D Mitchell (maybe less valuable?)

Would they accept 3 firsts Kelle, Wendell, Gary, Cole Chuma, Bol for Trae and Capella sign Gary Trent jr and fill out roster as needed.

Trae/Suggs
GTJr/Suggs Kevon
Franz/Houstan
Paolo/Isaac
Capella/Goga/MoW

Way too much uncertainty. This is one of those job killer moves. We have a great young core that likes each other. Trey Young, as gifted as he is, could destroy that and really put our rebuild back.

You have to be certain when you have guys as good as Franz and Paolo are going to be.

Kinda tempting but Trae for some reason seems to wear out the team..... Getting coaches fired..... Having issues with teammates..... Pass
