Hawks aren’t shopping him because his defense sucks - his attitude must be next level toxic.

I've wavered back and forth in the past on being interested in Trae Young. His fg% (especially 3pt%) scares me too much to really want him with the volume of shots he's going to expect in an undersized guard's build.

that's what i glean from the situation....it's one thing when the player wants out....it's another thing entirely when the org is the one that might want a change....trae is a true star in the league which makes the situation even stranger

We can debate how he would impact defense ( in negative fashion ofc), but it's not really hard to debate that he would improve offense, ballmovment and boost up pace a little bit.

And it would only cost F-Wagner and Banchero to get him.

Re: Hawks Open to Trading Trae Young
If Orlando traded all its draft picks and every player not named F-Wagner and Banchero, that package would be rejected by Atlanta.
His cost is outside Orlando's cash capacity.

Re: Hawks Open to Trading Trae Young
He could cause them to regress on the defensive side. The Hawks have consistently been near the worst defense in the league with Trae.Knightro wrote:Atlanta Hawks last three years...

This idea that Trae Young would somehow cause *regression* for this franchise offensively when he's one of the 10 best individual offensive players in the entire NBA doesn't make sense to me.
It's totally fine if you don't like his defense or his attitude or his leadership ability. But his teams have had zero problems scoring points at a high level.

Lacking cash capacity?
I thought we stockpiled so many cash considerations?

Re: Hawks Open to Trading Trae Young
Pros:
1) He's a scoring machine who draws defence to him like a vortex
2) He's a top tier playmaker, 2nd in assists per game
3) He fits the age profile of the team, if that's something of importance to the FO, but still brings experienced and playoff basketball.
These are the three things Orlando needs most - a scoring guard with gravity to draw extra defensive attention, the chops to pass out of it and the experience to know which to do and how to do it.
Cons:
1) He's a top 10 usage guy (4th among PGs). On a team where you're hoping PB and Franz can be your 1 and 2, that could be too big a mouth to feed.
Mitigation: Nice problem to have, needing to feed 3 true top tier options. Plus, Young is not a ball hog, will always look to find the open guy.
2) He's mostly a defensive negative.
Mitigation: Not much. Top half in Steal%, but that should be expected from a starting guard. Ideas that Suggs or Harris or another 3&D SG can help hide him are not really borne out in reality. Good teams and playoff match ups will ruthlessly go out to exploit him.
3) He's not very efficient. In fact, he's bottom 5 among starting PGs in eFG% this year. That's the lowest its been in years, but even so he's a career 50% guy. Mitigation: Offensive stars get extra attention, but Trae as a small guy is always going to have his shots contested, even if not double teamed.
4) There are character concerns, in terms of coaching and roster turnover around him. Mitigation: there were similar concerns about Jimmy Butler. Maybe Trae just wants excellence and is demanding a lot. Maybe it's all just chatter. (Or maybe he's a nutjob).
5) The cost of getting him is too high. Would we have to gut the roster and lose multiple young budding stars to land him, not to mention multiple picks?
Mitigation: most of the moves involving top PGs have been done in the past year or so. Orlando missed the boat on those. Trae and Harden are probably the only two out there who are possibly gettable via trade (plus FVV in RFA). You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. Fultz, Cole, Suggs and Carter would certainly have to be on the table and I doubt that's enough no matter how many picks you throw at it.

Now, given we have Paolo in place you could talk me into a place where we are building around Paolo with Young as the #2 and Franz and the 2b / 3. Alright, I can be talked into. The kid can shoot.
can he though? his career 3 pt is 35%.

Not interested.
Would cost one of Franz or Paolo. Orlando doesn’t have the value elsewhere.

Great post. I do push back on this one part specifically.
I don’t love citing eFG% as a measure of efficiency when you’re talking about a player who gets to the free throw line as often as Young does and converts at such an elite percentage.
Young’s TS% the last four years combined is .590.

I believe that is a feature of his radical shot selection and gunslinger mentality right now. He needs to be pulled in and and taught how to be a team player. Given his lack of defense and usage rate and aforementioned shot selection I’m not sure how realistic that “team mentality” change is but Coach Mosley might be the guy for it.
I repeat, I am NOT a fan of Trae Young. I’m just trying to play this out. It seems like “stars” become available every year but numerous teams bid and not all of them fit your needs or want to come her and on and on. If you sit on your hands forever you miss your window.

soon to be 25, given a monster extension, 2x all-star, i very much doubt anyone is going to "pulled in". he might refine his game, but likely is going to play how he always has.
