Re: Official 2023 Wizards OFFSEASON Thread
I like that Leonsis said the new GM will be from outside the organization … but that doesn’t preclude an organizational family man, a la Wes Unseld, Jr. when he was a coaching candidate. Someone who’s part of the larger Bullets/Wizards family.
That’s got to change. There’s no legacy here, yet this franchise acts as if there is — the retro jerseys, the bringing back of curios like Muresan, the nepo hires, the return of guys like Jamison, etc.
I want either a young, bold, ambitious GM (35 ish, in the Zack Kleiman mold) or someone who’s a major get a la Masai or Myers. No one in between.
Here’s the issue:
You’re not going to get anyone good, if you don’t give that person carte blanche to remake the team.
Everyone half-decent is gonna want that.
That means trading Beal while he still has juice, doing an S&T for Kuzma, and building around Deni, the draft pick, maybe Zinger, and the new picks to come. A team with a vision. A team we could get behind.

No, you do not under any circumstances keep KP or extend him or anything of the sort. The same goes for Kuz.
If it hasn't dawned on you yet, the only way forward is to tear the whole decrepit thing down to the core.
The foundation and the bones of this franchise are so rotten, another coat of paint won't change a damn thing.
Charting the course for a rebuild is also the quickest way to signal to Beal that he's got no future in this town.
If he wants to be a martyr and sit it out, fine, but the organization should make it clear to him that he shouldn't stick around due to a misguided sense of duty.
Embrace the suck, it's the only way forward.

Re: Official 2023 Wizards OFFSEASON Thread
the Wizards offseason is now about the anchor that holds the Wizards down ..... Beals contract which restricts any GM's flexibility on how to right the ship. Hachimura was the 1st to go due to what the Wizards could afford.
Who is going to negotiate with Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma now. Re-signing these guys becomes a red herring because it will add onto Beals contract woes. It really throws the direction of the franchise for a loop.
For all we know Beals contract might be the 1st thing that needs to go ,either through convincing him to drop his no trade clause or go young and let Beal know he wont be playing in any playoffs in the near future.

If you can come up with a Jordan Goodwins on a regular basis, you can name your own salary!

IOW, it can't be done.
As to Huff, yes, he posted a TS of .796, shooting the 3 at 50%, the 2 at 69.2% & FTs at 93.8%.
But, he played 95 minutes! Let's not get carried away.

I think a Beal trade is certainly in the table, but the first move needs to open up salary/flexibility. I really think this move means Kuz is 100%.
Once Beal secures the scoring title from Hayes and crosses 16k points, I think Ted will be fine with Beal being moved to contender. And so will Beal. Lol
Ted wont rank and trade every player over 25, but that’s fine if done correctly.
Keep KP, but trade Beal.
Keep Monte, but trade Delon.
This all makes sense except the Beal part. I absolutely would not wait around to trade him just so he can pass the Big E. It's certainly possible that there will be no viable Beal trade opportunity available this offseason, but if one becomes available, we should absolutely trade him. It's not just about salary cap management, it's about steering a new course for the franchise. As long as Beal is around, it is "Beal's team" which means it will reflect Beal's goals. Beal's goal is to win now, which should not be the team's goal.

Re: Official 2023 Wizards OFFSEASON Thread
I think it's less about intentionally bottoming out and more about what extended players could be in a year in terms of assets.
Like if you look at in terms of a trade:
KP extended = KP being being worth a first in a year from now, but your lottery slot is 8 next year instead of 6. I think most of us would take that deal.
Can we move an extended Kuz for value? Some kind of value, surely, but a first is less certain.
Moving on from Beal or not is a different ball game. That's much more of a clear directional change.

What are you both crowing about? Signing a player as productive as KP and wants to be here is a no brainer.
Obviously, this assumes he signs a fair deal, but I dont see any opportunities for him to make 30M+ year without a SnT.
Detroit had no business giving Bojan an extension last year, but he was worth a 1st at the deadline. (They are idiots for not making a trade).
What is it with people not understanding how the NBA works financially?!? In the summer, teams have less flexibility because of cap restrictions, the nba draft, and FA deals. Once December/January rolls around, teams have a much easier time moving those previously frozen assets.
Sure...Trade Beal this summer for a couple 1st... same for KP... But history suggest the best market is available at the deadline. You'll have been beaten down so bad by Turd and year of losing that it almost comes off as way to emotional. I.E. "Trade Everyone, Lose every game, Tank, Burn it down"
There are ways to do a strategic tear down. I mean, why would Danny Ainge trade for Sexton and Markkanen and not trade them to another team? What at idiot, must be trying to tread water...
Oh wait, Markkanen is now and AS and worth multiple lotto picks?!? Well hot damn

If KP continues to be a 25/10/3 Per/36 Center with a TS of 62% and great defensive metrics...then he will garner a strong trade package. What is so confusing about this?
Same with Beal. The guy makes 46M and has a no trade clause. It makes it very difficult to move him in the summer. So let him get the scoring record, let Ted get a few more butts in the seats, and let the new GM figure it out.

I dont quite understand this. Huff has put up Great/Elite stats in 2,500 minutes of high-level college basketball and the G-League. He then continues to do the same thing in the NBA, but you argue small sample size.
He is clearly worth a roster spot and has earned 10 MPG in my book. Not sure what anyone else is watching.

Im not saying keep him around to pass Big E... I'm trying to say that not trading him this offseason doesn't really mean too much. And that there is a path forward for Beal to be traded and allow his career in DC to end well for everyone.
This board is too full of suggestions that dont take into account the fact that running the Wizards is not playing 2K. Its a business with a ton of money, ego's, and relationships. Managing those is extremely important. Beal had a REALLY good year last year. He works hard at his craft and is a great face for a franchise in many ways. No reason to make a rash trade because the FO/Ownership has been garbage for 20 years.
As I said above. If a good deal comes along... great. But with mediocre over the hill players like Klay asking for the Max, Im in no rush to dump Beal's deal without getting compensation.

Maybe, somehow, I caused it, but this exchange seems kinda combative, & I don't see why it should be.
&, hey, if Huff can keep shooting the 3 at 50%... great!

Does he need that to be effective? He was solid on the defensive end. On the offensive side of the ball, he shot the ball well but also passed the ball well. I see him as a possible rotational player.

Is humor really that hard to read?He was terrific in 96 minutes, he's performed well in the G League, of course he deserves a shot in the league -- with us or somebody! I'd be perfectly happy for us to eat Todd's guarantee & sign Huff. Or give him a 2 way first. Or whatever....
No, I don't understand humor.
