I wish we got Russ. He'd easily be the best player on our team.

Yep I feel like they were thinking with the insane season he was having he would have wanted 25 mil a year and he resigned in the end w portland for a reasonable amount. Huge miscalculation. You have to be borderline insane to trade a young guard who was still trending upwards and was putting up curry-like percentages from the field. Fail, fail, fail.

They prioritized Fred and siakams development as the one and two and thought they could lead young players like they were the reincarnation of pippen and Jordan. The money and age argument was always so dumb considering gtj got the same amount of money just a smaller contract and Norm is the same age as siakam and fvv. He was homegrown, already had chemistry and yet for some reason they needed to get younger. And at the time, you can pull up receipts, I said gtj didn't even have Norman's peak potential since he lacked athleticism, handle, first step, finishing ability and all of his offense was predicated on shooting jumpers. I have no idea what this front office was thinking. Actually I do. Like I said, they thought he was essentially equal value and being slightly worse at that position wouldn't matter because siakam and fvv would lead the way and elevate eceryone anyway.
I remember at the time media and a bunch of people on this board kept blaming norm for our **** defense. Look who were blaming now. Lmao. Can anyone see siakam or fvv scoring 40 points on playoff defense? On that efficiency? Whatever Norm wasn't gonna win us a championship anyway, but we definitely would've been a more fun team to watch. The only saving grace now would be blowing it up.

Masai's made some pretty bad trades the last few years. Trading for Thad, very weak protection on the Poeltl trade, and this one.
If the rumours that he turned down Lowry for Maxey are true as well, you can add that one to the list too. He's consistently dropped the ball since the championship. His only good move was drafting Scottie.

20 mill per year is too much ? We have to pay a less skilled player in trent probably way more after this summer if we want to keep him. 23+...
Never understood this trade, absolute nonsense back then by Masai. He traded a beloved teammate, champion, fan favorite for a inefficient trent jr and rodney hood.....
For what ? Now we have to pay trent jr big bucks. 20 mill per year for norm is nothing, I mean he's a perennial 6th man candidate and always did a great job as a starter with heavy minutes.

Re: Remind me why the Raptors traded Norman Powell
There were folks here saying Trent was the superior player. The reasoning was Norm was traded for expiring contracts from the Blazers and that Trent had a higher ceiling than Norm.
One of them is in Cancun right now while the other just dropped 42 points in a playoff game.

He's playing great since 2019/2020. It's not an "outlier" game.

Because Nurse decided to start Fred over Norm after Leonard left, that was when the Fred and Siakam **** show started

Our timeline = Fred (29) + Pascal (29)

Hated the trade then. Hate it even more now. We have unathletic poor shooting one dimensional chuckers on raptors [fred, Trent, ...] and we don't resign an athletic scorer who shoots a good percentage..
Well played Masai... total fk up...

Said this the next season we made this trade, Powell paid the same and his ball penetration meet our need, but not everyone here agree with me when I said Powell is better.
The reason we made the trade is for cap flexibility, and the last few years have mainly focus on cap situation than acquiring the right talent.

Re: Remind me why the Raptors traded Norman Powell
Masai traded Norm because he was tanking the season. Tankers in this thread just need to sit this one out and cry in any of the other threads. At the time, I suggested re-signing Norm and tankers lost their mind at the thought.
What ended up happening is one of the fallouts of making tanking moves. The Raptors traded a guy that they built a culture with, who was close with the core they were going forward with, for a younger guy that has been harder to integrate in. Still, if they re-sign Gary he's more than capable of going off for 40 in a playoff game. His best years are ahead. Right now feels like a bad trade, but Norm didn't really come into his own until he was 27.

Like, they traded an older guy on an expiring deal for a 22 year old with "potential". The exact type of trade a whole lot of people constantly advocate for. Sometimes the older guy keeps playing well, and/or the younger guy doesn't develop as quickly. We don't need Columbo on the case to figure this out.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Lmaoo "higher potential" player gifted you a whole 2 pts during the play-in game, quite impressive!
