What ended up happening is one of the fallouts of making tanking moves. The Raptors traded a guy that they built a culture with, who was close with the core they were going forward with, for a younger guy that has been harder to integrate in. Still, if they re-sign Gary he's more than capable of going off for 40 in a playoff game. His best years are ahead. Right now feels like a bad trade, but Norm didn't really come into his own until he was 27.
Like, they traded an older guy on an expiring deal for a 22 year old with "potential". The exact type of trade a whole lot of people constantly advocate for. Sometimes the older guy keeps playing well, and/or the younger guy doesn't develop as quickly. We don't need Columbo on the case to figure this out.
Kinda weird because that's exactly what the loser two crew wants to do. trade experienced good players for players with 'potential'. sometimes they're SGA, sometimes they're gary trent.

They were missing PG and Kawhi, their two best players and Norm kept it close.

bballsparkin wrote:Not sure I expected to trade Norm for any elite potential. It maybe delusional to expect that kind of development as I never had Gary on my radar. And frankly have never been a fan other than his shooting. Which is streaky. Norm is nothing to cry about though. Water under the bridge. It's more staying course with the ship that is the issue.
If we had traded fvv instead it also would've been water under the bridge. And with all the hype around him couldve gotten a much bigger return. Except masai and a lot of this fanbase at the time would've been crying because he was the future groat and would surpass Lowry. And now he's not even better than jalen brunson.

Except if you had any semblance of talent evaluation you'd know trents potential was limited. That's like saying fvv could've become donovan Mitchell if he worked harder. Except for the fact he lacks all of the skills that make Mitchell who he is.
You know who would've helped us win the play in game when og and trent put up stinkers? Norman powell.

but norm's potential is unlimited? there is nothing more damning than a player scoring 42 points and having his team lose. it shows their impact on winning or lack thereof.

Right, I'd rather rack up players that shoot sub 40% and play defense first. That'll win you games. Look at the raptors this year. Oh wait.
I guess if fvv was there in place of powell they for sure would've won that game.

I don’t know what the heck you’re expecting NP to do against the PHX Suns of all teams.
This is a very unrealistic viewpoint. Hes a high end role player not a 1A or b.

This is not even the argument. It's like saying lebron isn't a better player than og anunoby because he didn't make the playoffs last year and we did and because our team won more that justifies having anunoby instead.

norms a good role player who was played well besides kawhi/PG. he also had a great performance the other day. but his impact on winning is limited, probably no different than trent's.

Par for the course nonsense that you see on here too often, a lot of people lack discernment and the ability to have a nuanced discussion.

the amount of real estate fred occupies in two heads is hilarious.

This is such a nonsense argument that you can literally make about any player that doesn't win anything.
Fact Is it would be stupid to say you'd rather have a 40% chucker than a guy that shoots 50/40/80. Especially if they play the exact same role on the team.

Oh look here come the ad hominem attacks when he realizes he has no idea how to make proper basketball related evaluations.
Are you gonna even bother addressing the last statement in the post you quoted or are you gonna act like it's beneath you? Because according to your argument and impact on winning, a better player like fvv who impacts winning more in place of powell would've definitely put clippers over the top that game no?

i'm not saying i'd rather have trent. i'm saying that our team wouldn't be measurably better with norm instead of trent on the team. his numbers wouldn't be as good and his flaws would show more. they bring different skillsets but their ultimate impact is around the same.
