Serious question.
This has always been a prominent issue since Jones became GM and Saver's ultra cheap ass didn't want to spend to acquire cheap young talent via the draft. As much as people tout Phoenix being a destination for star players, etc, We haven't attracted JACK SH** in the way of legitimate stars in their prime or key premium free agents in over 20 yrs. Paul and Durant are both past their primes, and Crowder and Mcgee were both mediocre additions honestly. And even then, we had to overpay Crowder just to get him to come here and not resign with Miami. This is even more exacerbated by Jones delusional arrogance believing that we don't need to value the draft. He's been disillusioned by playing with players like Lebron, Wade, and Bosch in their primes and of course it appears inconsequential to have quality depth because those players can carry a team to an actual title pretty much by themselves. Jones is living in fantasyland thinking that Past their prime stars and fringe bust scrubs can carry this team to a championship. And Saver was loving his delusions and feeding/ supporting it because it meant he could cheap out on talent/ depth in free agency and the draft.
Big changes are absolutely coming this summer. And I wouldn't be surprised if that included Jones and Williams for their perennial ineptitude. This is simply why you just can't skip steps in the process like we've done trading for Paul on impulse after a miraculous bubble run, and Durant at the expense of our future. BECAUSE a 37 yr old Paul wasn't ever gonna be a prime Lebron level star. And Durant (as great as he still is) just isn't the same world beater he was pre ACL injury with Golden State. IF we likely get bounced in this series, We need to seriously evaluate everything and work to reset our books and add legitimate depth! AND DRAFT ASSETS to offset our top heavy contracts and add LEGITIMATE PREMIUM TALENT, LENGTH, HIGH LEVEL ATHLETICISM. That's how you offset bad shooting nights and struggling.
1-
Trade Ayton this summer Any of:
1-
Dallas For key upgrades and most importantly, the 10th pick in the lottery and a chance at Wemby or Scoot, or one of the Thompson twins, etc.
2-
HoustonFor cap space, a premium talent like Eason, and the 20th pick in the draft.
3-
Portland For better cost controlled depth in Simons/ Nurkic/ and the Knicks pick (23rd pick).
4-
CharlotteFor Rozier/ Fillers/ and the 23' Denver pick ( 27th pick).
Absolutely move Paul for cap space or for legitimate depth pieces IF we want to give it one more yr with Durant before changing course. I'd look at Philly (if they lose Harden to Houston). Paul/ Shamet for Tobias Harris/ 24' NYK 2nd. Or maybe Toronto (who's going to strongly prioritize cap space for Siakim and Anunoby). So Paul/ Shamet for Van Vleet/ Trent Jr?? Or Paul/ Shamet for Van Vleet/ Boucher/ Porter Jr. Then bring in a proven high end Gm like Presti or Myers from Golden State. And maybe a proven college coach like Tom Izzo or Pursue Jay Wright? But some big changes need to happen here because this will be three consecutive postseason collapses for us.
