Re: Trade Talk (Part Twelve): 2023 Playoff Push Edition
I’ve listened to half of the podcast and the exit interviews, and there was an interesting point I wanted to listen to here. It’s a case where both people are correct.
Rudy pointed out that MIN was just four games short of being the fourth seed. With the several close games we lost to bad teams, and Towns back, it seems likely if we did nothing, we would do better next season. Dane though didn’t like this, and pointed out that the fourth seed in most seasons is closer to 50-52 games. I don’t know if fourth seed is a future goal, or Rudy is just talking about this season.
Since this is the trade thread, my question to the group is what should be the team’s goal next year, and do you believe a major trade would be needed to do it?

With many of the stars in the Western Conference over the age of 30, this year's playoff seeding may become more the norm.
IMO, the Wolves have to, at the very least, make the second round of the playoffs next year.
And yes, I do believe a KAT trade needs to occur in order to maximize Edwards and, to some degree, McDaniels. As you stated in another post, Gobert should continue to provide defense and some offense (put backs and dunks). Towns, for the amount he will be paid, values only the offensive side of the ball. And to be honest, whether it's due to injuries or other factors these past few years, he's not the player he once was there, especially when you consider he'll play second fiddle to Ant.

I'm wondering if big trades will be frequent this offseason in the West. I feel like there are a lot of disappointed franchises, a lot of potentially unhappy stars and a lot of up-and-coming franchises trying to make a move. I also think winning/losing the Victor sweepstakes will play into the aggressiveness for some franchises.

I think our aim next year should be to win the western conference.
I think a healthy squad of Conley/Ant/Jaden/Slo-Mo/Gobert plus Naw/Prince/Naz can compete for home court in the West. I think if we can add one more quality two-way player with some shot creation ability in place of Kat, and some better roster depth at PG and in the front court, then we have a shot at the western conference finals next year.

D.Schroeder as 2nd PG??

It kinda feels that way doesn't it
I think the parity in general will contribute to it as well. When Bosh/Lebron/Wade or the prime Warriors are rolling in, it kinda feels like you're fighting for 2nd place from the start of the season. But all the teams left right now look super beatable. Lots of teams are going to feel like they're one nice move away from being a contender. Especially a team like the Hawks or Mavs or Raptors is probably going to feel like they're not that far away.
Also the way the Lakers went from struggling to be .500 to one of the favorites by bringing in depth rather than the 1 big superstar might be of interest to some teams as well.

I suspect he's finally going to get paid this season. Not a whole lot of PG talent in the league, and quite a large need.
Not like $18 mill, but atleast a full MLE.

Huh? PG is super deep, by far the deepest position.
2nd PG for MLE is fine for Minnesota.

No real draft prospects this year or FA's.
Schroeder is literally the only real backup available who can play with consistentcy.

Yeah I read "Not a whole lot og PG talent in the league" as a league statement, not free agency statement.

Downside for Schroder...he'll turn 30 before next season. Do you feel confident in his ability to play to his contract in his age 33 season?

Re: Trade Talk (Part Twelve): 2023 Playoff Push Edition
Trade return and fitting with our roster.
I think many of us are looking to bring in pieces that will fit in the Ant, McDaniels timeline which I believe is the most likely and probably the best long term idea. However looking around the league would you be willing to bring in a veteran that can get this team over the hump and help carry us in the playoffs.
Basically would you be willing to move Towns for a guy like DeRozan? He would give us a closer and someone Ant and McDaniels can learn from. I think we would need to receive more back in this trade as well maybe a 3 way to get one more player.
Also looking at the bulls I think a Patrick Williams trade package could be enticing as well.

You've hit what is maybe my favorite trade possibility.
Williams hits the Ant/Jaden window. DeRozan can help win games in the short-term as a veteran.

Pat Williams sucks, no thanks. Wolves can do better in a Towns trade than that.

We should be reaching higher than Patrick Williams, I agree.

The ANT and McDaniels timeline is...now, right? We don't know if ANT wants to be here in 3-4 years of no playoff success.
Both are terrific players already.

Scottie Barnes would fit that narrative nicely.

He'd be tremendous. I doubt Toronto would do it though.

Scottie/Toronto would be another very logical option, depending on who they would make available.
