“It changes the game when you play a team like the Clippers,” Fizdale said before the Grizzlies’ game in Dallas last Friday. “It pulls that big away from the rim, and (you’re talking) about incredible defenders, some of the best in the league, Defensive Player of the Year type guys. If you can get those guys away from the basket, it only helps your perimeter (players) execute in the paint.”
Fizdale mentioned the Clippers as the team Gasol beat. You can see DeAndre Jordan — a Defensive Player of the Year type guy — help too far into the paint and give Gasol enough space to bury that shot.

Re: Is Embiids best aspect on offense his jumper?
I think the best aspect of his offense is his versatility. Not a great deal of that versatility is leveraged off his shooting but just consider the bind you have when you play against him.
1. He forces you to have to put a big Center out there. You will get killed with a small ball 5 on him because he can post and overpower down there if you don't.
2. He can shoot from the arc which means your defensive Center can't lag too far off him and provide much rim protection. He'll be lethal if he can continue to shoot 40%+.
3. If you try to lag off and then close quickly he has already shown the handle needed to get to and finish at the rim or alternatively pull up at the FT line for an open mid-range shot which he hits around 65% of the time. This stresses your defenders who are left out on the court because they have to come out to defend the mid-range which gives him the ability to move around them for a layup which he can easily hit over shorter defenders. Last game when the defense sagged too much he even kicked it out for a wide open corner 3 but Ilyasova got caught for offensive 3 seconds.
4. He is a massive body for setting screens which he is gradually improving upon. He seems to have good instincts off the screen to set up for an open 3, a mid-range jumper or roll and finish above the rim with a really wide catch radius because of his height and arm length. Just imagine what will happen when he plays with a competent PG who can actually threaten teams on the PnR. I'd love to see him try and run it a bit more with Stauskas because of his ability to handle the ball, finish at the rim and shoot. This is much more threatening than TJ and Sergio who can only shoot mid-range open jumpers.
I don't think there is a single other player that had this kind of extreme versatility at the center position. The main things that he has to develop are a stronger base to finish better at the rim but even more importantly recognize the double teams and pass the ball out to the open shooter. Once those passing skills develop (and you can already see them starting to emerge) teams will be much more reluctant to double and he'll have a lot more room to operate down low.
I was fully expecting him to be dominant on defense from the get-go but the quick evolution of his offensive game has been amazing. I can't wait to see what he's doing when Simmons and Noel are back and he has a bit more experience and is off the minutes restrictions. I think he's going to be an absolute terror next year once we add some more players who can attack off the dribble, defend on the wings and he's had an offseason to try and work on the deficiencies in his game that have come to light this season. He has a hunger to be the best and I think he could be a top 5 player by next season just by passing out of double teams and increasing his finishing at the rim to 60% (which should be very doable with better PG play).

I want Biid to score like Dirk and still provide elite defensive impact like Gobert on the other end.

would be pretty funny if this was actually the thought process that went into developing Embiid as more of a faceup midrange jumpshooter than a post player.

Embiid's post game was a massive failure in 2018 against Horford and in 2019 against Marc Gasol, it was evident this was not the best path moving forward, he is great from midrange even though he is fairly bad from 3pt land, so facing up and pullup jumpers were the sensible option to choose against most players.

It all works together. The jumper is the counter to defending him with a post defender like Gasol. The drive is the counter then to guarding him up close to prevent the jumper. The post moves then are the counter to defending the drive with a smaller guy. It’s the whole package that makes him unique.
