Re: Return of the Yak: The Everything Jakob Poeltl Thread
27 years old, good passer, high efficiency around the basket, quality rim protector, he can guard a bit on the perimeter and he's a low maintenance player who doesn't require touches. He's a guy that you lock up for multiple years. He's definitely more valuable than a mid 1st.
A defense that has Poeltl/OG will be very good for many years.

I’d be very surprised they don’t get a deal done. I’m very impressed with his perimeter defense, it’s elite. Interior is a bit underwhelming but I say that about Rudy Gobert as well. Fact is teams like to go at Siakam at the rim and less against Poetl, he makes a difference

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Poeltl starting at $15m would be a steal.

13 to 15 mill would be awesome. I have a feeling it will average out to around 20 mill per season.
Raptors don't really have a track record of getting guys for a few million less a season. It's usually the opposite. I don't expect it to change now.

Chris Boucher makes 12. He will get no less than current OG money which is 17+.. 17-20 range.

So was Kyle Lowry. It's just (Masai's, and our) bad luck that the mid-first turned out to be Giannis.
But if there was another Giannis in the 2024 draft, I'm sure Raps would have kept the pick. This management team has a certain set of skills, and drafting has generally been high on that list. 2014 and 2021 aside.

Not even. (a) Denver is not a good team on the road, and (b) Jamal Murray was clearly playing hurt that night. His shooting was way off. He probably suited up only because he was back home and obviously had friends and family at the game. And me. I specifically went to that game to see him live.
I personally don't think you can tell much from the post-trade stats, given the amount of tanking/load management that started after the ASB. Charlotte was actually winning games before they pulled the plug for our pair of games in the last week. But it does make theoretical sense that his rim protection and passing would help the Raps at both ends, and at least the stats don't rebut that.
My only concern is that if he is returning, then that MUST mean Pascal is, too. For at least an entire season. After such a bad chemistry year, it would be bad to trade Jak's best friend on the team right after he re-signed. I know it's a business, but that's not how Masai operates.

20 million feels like fair value so anything under that would be a steal

The players know it is a business too. Poeltl knows the most likely place to get paid is in Toronto as they have his Bird Rights.

What was Murray's injury? He played a game high 40 minutes that game. I don't understand why the Nuggets would play an injured Murray that many minutes when they had a pretty nice cushion for 1st place in the West. Raptors played an excellent game. They forced Murray to take some tough shots. I do agree though, we beat a lot of mediocre teams after the Poeltl trade. With Nurse halfway out the door then, it was tough to fully evaluate this team. Looking forward to seeing what our new coach can do.

Once again you contradict me, without providing evidence to support your opinion. IIRC, Murray was a game-time decision. From the ESPN recap:
After sitting out the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to Brooklyn because of soreness in his left knee, Murray returned to the lineup to play his first game north of the border since December 2018, and had some 40 to 50 family and friends on hand to watch him.
“It’s always nice being home, seeing everybody, seeing people I haven’t seen for years,” Murray said. “It always brings you back to earth.”
Murray is from Kitchener, Ontario, about 65 miles west of Toronto. He missed the last part of the 2020-21 season and all of last season after surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. Still, Malone said before the game that “there was no way (Murray) wasn’t playing.” Murray received a warm ovation when the starters were introduced.

Murray was healthy enough to play a game high 40 minutes. Higher than any player on his team and ours. If he wasn't healthy enough to play, the Nuggets wouldn't have played him. Just a week before beating the Nuggets at home, we lost a very close game in Denver. There was also a lot of controversy in that game with some poor officiating in the 4th quarter that benefitted the Nuggets. So we clearly were able to compete just fine against them. Not surprising that we would win the home matchup given our strong home record and the Nuggets struggles on the road.
Do I think Murray was 100%? No, but not many players are in March.

He's a lock to re-sign. But Gary gone.

The Toronto Raptors are a "lock" to re-sign Jakob Poeltl, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report.
Poeltl, an unrestricted free agent, could command a salary in the range of $13-$15 million per season.
The Raptors are also unlikely to bring back Gary Trent Jr. next season.

WuTang_OG wrote:Per multiple sources around the league, the Toronto Raptors are a "lock" to bring back center Jakob Poeltl, whom the team initially drafted at No. 9 in 2016. He was a necessary sacrifice in 2018, sent to the San Antonio Spurs in a package for Kawhi Leonard.
The Spurs sent him back to Toronto in February, and the Raptors didn't give up a protected 2024 first-round pick to rent his services for a few months. While Toronto has several decisions to make this offseason concerning the future of Pascal Siakam, O.G. Anunoby, Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr., pencil Poeltl back with the team.
The question will be price, and Poeltl may not find significant interest from the teams with cap space, likely placing him in the NTMLE range. That might lead Toronto to pay him in the $13-15 million starting range.

13-15M? seems light. If Raps land 16-18M that's a good deal imo
Yeah, the 13-15 number makes no sense. I don’t know how much I trust this report when every other reports says he turned down 4/58 from the Spurs. He has to be looking for closer to $20m. If we get him for $15m that seems like a very good deal for us.

It will be highly hilarious if Yakub chooses to sign somewhere else. Low likelihood, though.

In recent interviews with media from his homecountry Austria, Poeltl clearly stated his wishes.
He wants to stay in Toronto, But:
- they have to compete, if they rebuild he is gone
- the money has to be what he is worth. This might be his only chance to get a big payday. So the 15 mil Number is bogus. It is what he turned down in San Antonio. Anything beneath 20 Mil would be a surprised.
- the new coach seems to be an important part for him
