I just want someone with upside at this point. Quinn and Atkinson I can be optimistic about. Monty might be a good coach and a good guy, but Bud was both of those things and accomplished more. My worst fear was making a change just to a make a change and being stuck with a downgrade.

I would love to get people's thoughts on who they would want to hire assuming everyone's favorite two guys are not viable options.

1) Nick Nurse - maybe we don't want him, maybe he doesn't want us, maybe both, but there's been no mention of him so let's hypothetically take him off the table

2) Ty Lue - still under contract with the Clippers, other teams sniffing around, but not much to suggest the Clippers are looking to move on as of now

Again, you can't have either of them. Who do you hire as coach?

I personally don’t have interest in either. I want an innovative mind that’s ready for a shot at his own staff and build his own culture.

My 3 favorite choices would be:

1. Chris Quinn
2. Shaka Smart
3. Sam Cassell

Monty is one of the worst candidates we could hire. He runs a very stale, rigid system that also got exposed numerous times in the playoffs the last three seasons. Even Bud outcoached him. It would be ridiculous to fire Bud and hire literally the only coach that Bud could outsmart on the way to a title.

So is this why a lot of people think Monty is an incompetent buffoon? Because a good coach bested him in the Finals? Some of you guys must think every coach outside of the Top 2-3 guys in the league is a complete moron.

Is this actually smart by teams? That's not a rhetorical question because you're right NBA teams are wildly impatient with coaches. Guys are fired the first problem that pops up. Probably partly because it's easier to fire a coach than make big roster changes but I do wonder if teams would be better off with some keeping continuity in the program.

Should note I also believe coaching in pro sports is overvalued and talent of your players matters way way more. So maybe this is all just window dressing.

Talent ultimately determines ceiling. Coaches determine the gap between ceiling and actuality.

Now that we have a few names confirmed I've added a poll of known candidates. I did not include Nurse, his name has not been linked . I did not include Lue, he's still the HC in LA. I may have forgot one or two but oh well.

Only Sam Cassell, Charles Lee, and Kenny Atkinson are names I'd feel comfortable with.

1) X's and O's game management (calling timeouts, not making stupid challenges)
2) build offensive system that will run plays
3) developing and integrating younger players like MarJon.

I’d say that Bud got fired more for overseeing a historically bad defeat, rather than having not achieved a historically good accomplishment.

Seeing the list laid out like that doesn’t inspire confidence. So far, the only names I would have any interest in are Atkinson, Quinn and Lee in that order. Definitely find it strange we aren’t linked to Nurse at all but maybe he he’s had something lined up for months now.

I've been waiting for Nick Nurse to jump in off the top rope. So this Monty thing has me perplexed.

That said, it's all about a strong character guy that Giannis will bond with. Monty is that.

I'd be OK with Atkinson, but he's older than Nurse, Bud, Quinn, Lue, Monty - basically all the guys we have on our radar including the guy we fired.

Would rather have some fresh, younger blood in there.
