There were reports that he flew into the Tampa area, which would only mean the two sides were discussing an extension. He's back.

I am reluctant to get my hopes up but it seems like Cashman is still driving the bus, and he of all people is not going to fire Joe Torre in a press conference. If he was getting let go I would be shocked if it was anything but one of George's henchman reading a statement.

Great news.

Now that this is done, let's resign Mo and Posada.

A one year deal and a pay cut?!?! How disrespectful. Torrie should leave with his dignity in tact and tell them to kiss his ass...

Give him a one year deal and let him manage the last season at the old Yankee stadium. great decision by management even though I would've loved Girardi or Mattingly.

Apparently he did.

He declined the deal.

Torre turned the deal down.
It was a one year deal. 5 million dollar base. Million dollar bonus's up to 3 million if he reached the WS.

He said no
Cheers. — Mags

I think a 5 mil base and bonuses that could make it 8 as well as vest a 2nd year 8 is pretty damn good deal. If he doesn't reach the World Series they would probably have fired him anyhow now if he does they are going to give him 16 mil over two years.

Of course when you factor in how much more it would have cost to re-sign Rivera and Posada if they had fired him never mind replacing Andy Pettite, which they flat out just couldn't have done it is a drop in the bucket.

Uh that sucks...

I think its sad that ppl are saying that 5 mil for a manager is too little. I dont care about his credentials. he could have earned 3 more mil if we got to the WS, the ultimate goal. he may have turned it down over pride but if it was over money, he sucks.

Yeah the deal was fine. 5 mil with the possibility of 8 is still insane money for a manager. He decided to turn it down, good for him. Time to move on.

I love Joe but if he has to be paid twice as much as any other manager...oh well. If it isn't his fault they didn't make it it he also wouldn't have been the reason they did.

I think it was a matter of respect. As much money as YES and the Yankees are worth, what statement are they trying to make by nickle and diming him? Oh well, their loss. They're gonna regret the day they f**ked him.
