It could be our lack of interest or his, but it is fascinating to me that we've heard not a peep on a mutual match here.

The fact that we haven't heard of Nurse interviewing with anyone might speak to how he's viewed around the league more so than just our apparent lack of interest (although as we need to continually acknowledge, is pure speculation). Not too hard to read the writing on the wall though:

"Some of the coach’s relationships had frayed, too. Gary Trent Jr. said after the season that he got used to the coach’s criticism coming out in the media before Nurse told him in person, and more players had issues with Nurse privately"

For better or worse, if you're a coach who struggles communicating and maintaining positive relationships with your players in this day and age, you're not getting that long of a leash.

That is a pretty damning comment. I don't think Giannis is leaving, but he 100% needs to be on board with whomever we hire. Not sure he would like hearing criticism from his coach through the media.

The length of this search makes me feel like things are pointing to Charles Lee.

If Lee is the guy for Horst and the owners, you couldn't hire him while the door is still swinging from Bud leaving. But with a time interval commensurate with a thorough search, you can say you looked at all available candidates and made a reasoned decision to take the guy with the office down the hall.

Which I think is the right answer anyway. Lee will be a head coach next year somewhere. Maybe because of his HC inexperience he's more suited to a young team like Detroit, but if he's well-liked by Mr. Loyalty-in-my-DNA and the others he's worked with, it seems like the job is his.

<Mandalorian voice> This is the vibe.

This process so far reminds me more of what we went through in hiring Horst than in hiring Bud. Flip over a bunch of weird stones, promote internally.

Also, while there were other reasons to move on from Bud, it's certainly a coincidence that it happened right as Lee became a hot name on the carousel.

If Doc gets fired I’d offer him PBO here and he could mentor Lee

Would Charles Lee run a drop defense and the five-out, no motion offense with Giannis at the top of the key? If so, then no thank you.

Out of curiosity, what do people propose we run for a base defense? Brook can really only play the drop defense, Bud did a lot of switch everything when Brook wasn't on the floor. I get you change up some specifics but the general scheme certainly seemed to match the personnel that was given to Bud

I really don't get this... There's no analytic geek angle... There's no amazing euro/gleague/college stint. There's no relationship/backing outside of Heat players. The heat struggled to the back end of the eastern conference two years in a row. The only constant through their success has been Spo. I can't find any articles about how he's some basketball doogie houser. Really at a loss. Would we be having this conversation if there was a no weakside defender charge rule in place?

As has been stated the whole Nurse thing is weird. He'll end up with a gig but I don't think he's the desirable candidate much of this board thinks he is.

With Nurse even if we remove the Bucks component of this, I think he was one of the initial names bandied about for Houston and I don't know if it was ever reported that he interviewed with them or not and the same thing happened with Phoenix. What I haven't seen is anything about him being interested in these jobs. I bring this up because Nurse being gone from Toronto was one of the worst kept secrets in the NBA post-All Star Break and I heard multiple NBA media people talk about how great he'd be in media. It wouldn't surprise me if that's his preference right now.

If Detroit wins Wemby tonight, I think that changes the coaching carousel and makes it a more attractive destination for the blue-chippers.

He's supposedly on the list for Phoenix & Philadelphia so there is atleast some interest there. Just for some reason we are absent in that, whether that is our choice or his, or it's being kept secret for some reason, we just don't know

How funny would it be if all of these coaches just switched teams this offseason like a weird version of NBA musical chairs? At least it would make for an interesting next season.

This is the issue with all assistants, really.

Much like many people can’t explain why they love Chris Quinn other than he worked for Spoelstra, they can’t explain why they don’t like Lee other than he worked for Bud.
