As to why I don’t talk about his offense, why would I? He’s a great role player and this season has been hitting his wide open threes. Nobody is delusional and calling for him to be named an all-star like they are claiming he’s DPOY caliber. So I don’t feel the need to keep people in check regarding his offense. He does his job on offense and is integral. I watch the games and that’s what my eyes tell me. They also tell me he regularly gets cooked on defense and it’s laughable that people think he’s worthy of all-defense. Even Jaylen is a better defender and he’s just barely above average. White is like our 5th best defender behind Tatum, Smart, Timelord and Jaylen but to read this thread you’d think he was our best. It’s dumb and deserves to be mocked so here I am!!

So many of his blocks are after he's completely cooked and blown by by offensive players and he chases it down and sometimes gets a block. Aided of course by the player being worried by defenders meeting them at the rim as well though. Yes they still count. But many times he doesn't get them and the result is a score or missed bunny. Point is, he shouldn't be credited with great defense in either case. I don't think he's anything but average on man. Where White excels is on team defense where he gets many of his blocks and steals. I won't deny he's a good team defender. But average on-man plus good team defender does not make him all-nba worthy and that was only ever my point. People get so damn hyperbolic about our players on this sub.

BostonCouchGM wrote:didn't say he "let's guys go to chase blocks". I said he gets his blocks sometimes when guys have blown by him due to his bad defense and is able to recover and get a block. This is made easier because the guy who just blew by him has to think about help defenders meeting them at the rim giving White an opportunity to surprise them with the chase down block. Yes, everyone gets beat once in awhile. But he has games where this happens multiple times. He's probably at best our 5th or 6th best defender but people claim he's all-defense. It's just kinda silly. If he makes an all-defense team it'll be a slap in the face to all the better defenders on our team. They'll be happy for him of course because they're making bank and it's being a team-player but it'll still be laughable.

Props on the All-Defensive nod, but this dude has a hard ceiling. He's been getting cooked in these last couple of playoffs. Will always love him for Game 1 of the Finals, but elite players touch him up. In your hearts, you know this is true.

Called for him to be traded last year after his pathetic finals performance. Some people just don’t have the stones to shine where the bright lights are and once again he has fizzled out like a little bitch in a tougher series. If he doesn’t show up in game 6 I’d much rather dump him and keep Pritchard.

I recall him being clutch af game 1 vs the Warriors, and I recall him playing an outstanding game 3 against the Warriors. Without him, we might have gotten swept. Also played really well at times against the Heat. In this season's playoffs, he is pushing a .650 TS%, best amongst rotation players with the exception of Rob who we don't try to create offense for even though he is pushing a TS% of .872. He hasn't been the stud he was at times during the season but he hasn't killed us by any means.

He runs hot and cold. I'm not sure we've been using him to his strengths, and he shouldn't automatically get 30 minutes per game on a given night.

Curious as to why he was so ineffective against Philly when he torched them all season. Harden’s strength and Mariel’s speed bothered him a lot more in playoffs than in regular season and he had a lot of trouble finishing at the rim. Hopefully it’s just a slump and he returns to form against Miami.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

OG would hate it here if more moves weren't made. He'd get completely squeezed by all the frontcourt depth.

We’re just a different team when White can tap into his offense/scoring. And that only happens when WE MOVE THE BALL. He’s not gonna take possessions/shots away from Jays and Smart but he’s more than capable of contributing as a catch-and-shoot player and second side playmaker.

The buzzer beater at .26 in that first video was kind of a lucky heave. The 3 at .41 was a tough shot. Otherwise though I think it's a stretch to call any of that "unbelievable shotmaking". That's just good offense created for him and the team by good ball movement. And that's better, because that's repeatable. He'll have cold days sometimes, but if he and the team consistently generate looks like that, he/they will put up exceptional numbers and percentages over the long haul.

I think it’s fair to say he’s above average streaky as a shooter hot and cold. I’d be curious to know how much is just inherent streakiness vs what you are saying - ie, he plays better within certain play styles.

If they can unlock 40% 3PT D. White on a more regular basis it’s worth making some moves around that. Totally changes the team imo.

Shot selection/shot profile is a huuuuuuuuuuuge factor in shooting percentage. If White is taking a ton of open, catch & shoot 3s I'd expect him to shoot a good percentage. Same for anyone really (obviously not including guys who just don't or can't shoot).

I think White's got a very, very impressive off ball game. Feels like he knows where to drift without the ball. Good feel for when to catch and shoot vs when to swing it vs when to drive the close out. To me, when he plays great it's a strong reflection of how others around him played because he's a guy who thrives off of being put in good positions.

lifetime contract for this man. Keep him till he retires. Just such a good role player, glue guy. so unslefish, makes the right basketball play pretty much every time. can play the 1 or the 2. all-NBA level defender.

Hit a HUGE 3 off the dribble for us in the 4th quarter (i think it pushed the lead from 2 to 5 or from 4 to 7) and then the game winning tip in at the buzzer.

Oh and that block he had on Butler tonight was huge.

Not to mention, personality-wise, he's a great guy to have around the locker room. Literally everyone loves him on the team.

Just keep giving him 30 MPG for the next 4 years, at least.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

That play reminded me of the old John Wooden quote: "never mistake activity for achievement". Most players would try to show off some fake hustle trying to save the ball and giving it away to the other team under the basket for an easy layup (activity). Instead White just made the right read which is eating the turnover and giving the Celtics defense a chance to set itself (achievement). Winning play. Winning player. Don't care about his temporary shooting slump, he can play on my team any day.

I wrote this during last year's ECF. I stand by every word. I hope he stays in Boston for the rest of his career.

I posted this in Joe Mazulla thread but it belongs here too.

Play of the new millennium last night!
3-7 from 3 when rest of team shot 4-28.
Heat shot 0-4 from 3 when guarded by White, 14-26 against rest of team
Heat shot 1-12 when guarded by White
Celtics shot 6-8 when White passed to the shooter
