Re: 2023 Draft Discussion Part 5
I feel like the top 10 picks will go pretty close to consensus but I think at picks 11 Magic, 12 Thunder 13. Raptors, you could see some off the board picks.
Those 3 teams all like the same type of player -- the long, versatile guy who is maybe a little underdeveloped in terms of shooting. Because the Magic also have pick 6, they could go with a really high upside guy nobody expects here, while OKC/TOR could go with a player from a smaller school or an international player.

I agree on OKC and they’re the #1 threat to take Bilal before us but like most draft boards I’m fairly confident ORL will use the 2nd pick on a shooter (Dick, Bufkin or Hawkins - period).
Their 1st pick is already likely to be an upside pick of either Ausar or Whitmore. I don’t see them further rolling the dice on their 2nd pick too. They want to start being more competitive, it won’t make much sense to take another wing to develop with Paolo, Franz and one of Ausar or Whitmore already there. They completely lack shooting to space the floor for those guys and all their guards are mediocre so I’d give an outside chance they take Cason but really I believe they’ll take one of Dick, Bufkin or Hawkins.

Yup, their 1st pick could influence their 2nd pick. If they take someone like Hendricks or Dick at #6, it opens up a lot of different possibilities for them at 11.
They could also trade one or both of these picks for immediate help. They played at a playoff pace in the 2nd half of last year and they will probably try to make another jump up this year.

Man, a lot of mocks have Miller going #2.
That would really make pick #3 interesting. Scoot and Lillard really can't co-exist long term, they'd have to choose 1.

This is the type of mock you'd have expected like 4 months ago

JHS at 9 to Utah would be awesome for everyone picking after.
I get the measurements, eye test, yada yada yada...but can anyone find me a player with NBA success after 0.4 OBPM and 0.3 DBPM in college?
He'd truly be an outlier.

I think Miller is a lock there unless he really blows his workout

I believe Zach Lavine @ 2.9BPM is the lowest average quality player in the NBA the last 13 years or since college BPM was tracked.

Sounds like Jeremy Woo just did team need analysis for his mock. This isn't how NBA GMs think, so it's just a lazy way of drawing it up.

I feel like if Masai wants to turn the direction of this franchise then their is one move to make and its to draft Scoot. He is exactly the player we need and i feel like can be had. You pair Scoot with Scottie and you have your future pretty much locked up.
All these other players are nice but wont move the needle for us to go deep in playoffs so whats the point? Im a fan of Siakam and OG but you need to give up something great if you want something great.

And Zach Lavine at least had solid shooting splits of 44/38/70 which suggested he might be able to score.

Hawkins at 13 to us with George, Bufkin, and Wallace as potential picks still available works for me. I am not comfortable with Bilal at 13, but if we can get a second 1st round pick in the late teens/early 20s, then I wouldn't mind picking him.

Utah needs a PG and I think JHS is the purest PG of the bunch. It seems like the league is in love with big PGs and his skill with pick and roll will work with Walker Kessler and allow them to either move Sexton or make him an off-guard because he sure ain't a primary.
JHS is flawed but he should be a decent defender and he will shoot it better with better spacing. Kessler allow you to take risks on less than perfect defenders.

Chances JHS hits Deron Williams level is like 2% for me.

Interesting. I think I would prefer any of Bufkin, Wallace, or George ahead of Hawkins. But I also wouldn't be mad considering we need shooting in the worst way.

Kobe Bufkin continues climbing. He's up to 10 on KOC's big board.
