2016 Spurs vs. 2023 Nuggets

The 2015-16 San Antonio Spurs, in Tim Duncan's final season, went 67-15 in the regular season and swept the Memphis Grizzlies team in the first round of the playoffs. They lost to the #3 seed Oklahoma City Thunder with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in the 2nd round.

The 2022-23 Denver Nuggets went 53-29 in the regular season. They won the Western Conference, but played the 8, 4, and 7 seeds to do so. They will play the 8-seed Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.

The 2016 Spurs are very difficult to assess. On paper they’re one of the greatest teams of all time with the +11.3 net rating and 10.28 SRS, but OKC just overwhelmed them with size and athleticism. Duncan got injured in like January or February of that season, a significant part of this is whether we get pre or post injury Duncan in this matchup. Pre-injury 2016 Duncan was still really good, post-injury 2016 Duncan couldn’t score and was borderline unplayable against OKC.

I’ll go Spurs. 2016 was just a ridiculous season, the Warriors and Spurs were both GOAT level regular season teams and the Cavs and Thunder hit crazy high levels in the playoffs too.

2016 had basically 4 All-time types of teams in the Warriors, OKC, Spurs, and the Cavs.

Unrelated to the topic at hand, but would 2016 be the best quartet of teams in a century / and all of NBA history (judging in a given year & era of course)?

It has to be either 2016 or 2017 (replacing OKC with Houston).
