Re: Nick Nurse appreciation thread!
we'll miss him. nurse helped deliver us a championship and did a wonderful job considering the woeful scoring/shooting/guard talent he was given.
the fall guy for a super disappointing and deluded front office and a group of selfish players who didn't like each other. but as we've seen, the coach/manager being the fall person is normal across professional sports.
was nurse perfect? no, not really. but i think if you look at everything, it was an acheivement he wrung out a .500 record with that crap team. he played completely to their strengths (defense/rebounding) and tried to minimise their weaknesses. With better/more consistent guard play, a more well-rounded roster and better depth, things could've been different.

The mods and posters that say “Be patient/I’ll love him forever” never provide any real alternatives for anything.
Nurse failed. He ran out of time and didnt develop our young players quickly enough. If you disagree, then provide the name(s) of someone else who should be held responsible for last seasons failures.
This will obviously never happen.

You mean a better version of the crap team he wrung out a 48-34 record the previous season? The team that had a 5-2 record (should of been 6-1) against the teams currently in the Finals? Nick checked out on the Raptors mid-season, roughly around the time he literally left the team for a game on personal business.
And speaking of Czech, I must admit Nurse miraculously coached a team of legit NBA players to a near win over the Czech team led by *checks notes* Tomas Santoransky. Oh, and Jan Vesely - a 6th overall pick! That has to be regarded as an accomplishment. Thanks, Nick!

you're a joke. what does last year have to do with this year?

explain how this is nurse's fault? what team can credibly win in the modern day game if they can't shoot? I'm sure he's the one bricking all those open shots and the one who put that team together, right?
he adapted the play to match what he was given. a bunch of non-scorers who didn't want to play together. you don't even get what you're upset about. this guy helped win us a chip and you're denigrating him with that crap sarcasm? really?
and he checked out? as if he's the one who choked the lead in the play-in, right?

Nick Nurse quit on us as soon as Pascal got injured and worked his way to being fired.
He pulled a Vince Carter on us. Only some of us remember this feeling.
Watch how much better he coaches for our division rival next season.
Thanks for the chip but f*k this guy....

Even though I agree, he also had the best team and superstar we ever had. Stop overrating the impact coaches have on their team. One unfortunate bounce and he'd be in the Casey category. Except Casey never had the talent he had

The Sixers won't get passed the second round. They're not that talented.

Re: Nick Nurse appreciation thread!
Nick Nurse went into business for himself this past season.
But he was a shining light as lead assistant for Casey, and of course won us a title as head coach.
In spite of how he sold the team out in the end, he’s still hands down the greatest coach in franchise history.

They both achieved winning one title on a stacked team. Talent wins games, not coaches. They're not as relevant as we think they are.

Same players. Except that after the trade deadline, this year's roster was arguably better than the roster at the end of the 2021-2022 season - even without OPJ. So ... not crap.

Nurse started his career as a shooting coach. If an NBA coach has any impact on games beyond putting the players on the court (for 40 minutes per game), it's to help the team generate better looks and shoot more efficiently. Again, same roster as last season.
Brinbe wrote:he adapted the play to match what he was given. a bunch of non-scorers who didn't want to play together.
Again, same roster as last year. The 2021-22 Raptors were one of the youngest teams in the league, with two players in the Rising Stars Game, plus Gary and OG. They made the playoffs and were fifth overall in the conference. They could easily have beaten the Sixers in the playoffs if Fred, Scottie and Gary weren't hurt/sick, and even then if Precious had made just one FT at the end of regulation time in Game 3.
Brinbe wrote:you don't even get what you're upset about. this guy helped win us a chip and you're denigrating him with that crap sarcasm? really?
In 2019, Nick took over a 59-win team that was #1 in the conference the previous season, with Kawhi and Danny Green switched in for DeMar and Jak, and later HOFer Marc Gasol acquired for JV. And coached them to 57 wins and #2 in the conference. And was damn lucky to win the championship - especially after calling that insane time out to stop the Raps' run in the last few minutes of Game 5.
Brinbe wrote:and he checked out? as if he's the one who choked the lead in the play-in, right?
Raptors lost the play-in the same way they lost a LOT of games last season - taking a big lead and choking it away in the fourth quarter. At a certain point, I have to blame the coaching staff for failing to address the repeating pattern.
And note that outside shooting from this "crap roster" wasn't a problem in the play-in game. Raps outshot the Bulls 35.5% (on 31 attempts) to 26.9% (on 26 attempts) from 3. The obvious problem was missing 18 FTs in what turned out to be a five-point loss. Was that Nurse's fault? I don't know, but it sure seemed like the sort of thing that would happen if a team mentally checked out, after the coach checked out.
Nurse is the one who unilaterally raised all this weeks before the end of the season in that infamous post-game presser. That was unquestionably a distraction for the team, and not appreciated by management. NURSE. WAS. AT. FAULT. If you deny this, you're the only one who is.
Brinbe wrote:your pretension is showing and it's ugly. def not smarter than youy think you are.
It would be pretty tough to be smarter than I think I am.
I see you didn't respond to my comment about the hack job Nurse did with the NT.

The last season... He hired an Iowa high school teammmate (Michael Prenger) that learned from the same coach nurse did to be shooting coach with high school expereince after the raptors lost one of the best shooting coaches in the league. He does that, makes nepotistic hires of guys that people don't repsect, but that he knows from Iowa. (Like Nate, what was the point in bringing back Nate after everything that came out in Indy). Shooting coach isn't everything, but its one hell of a coincidence and a real bad look hire and made sure they wouldn't improve.
And he stopped deveolping players that we needed for shooting, moved FVV back on ball after saying he would move him off, and he stopped generally giving any ****.

He was too smug with all the self promotion, and his methods were too similar to Thibs for my liking. Still objectively a good coach.

The team missed 18 FTs at home vs the Bulls. Was that also Nurse’s fault?
I don’t blame Nurse for being frustrated. Team got worse the past 4 seasons and management was pressuring him to play fringe NBA players like Malachi Flynn.
Even if we won 48-50 games again this year we weren’t getting out of the first round. The roster is buns.

It's straight lunacy, DC should not even be mentioned in the same breath as Nurse.
