Just saw a headline that the Lakers plan to match offersheets up to $100m for Austin Reeves.
Swoop in and steal Rui, while all their attention is on Reeves.

Sincere question for someone who hasn’t watched Rui that much: isn’t he just younger Tobias?

Similar, but worse?
I don't think he's what we need, but he'd be a value at what we can pay him, so I'd be good with him.

In a way. However, he's stronger, longer (3 more inches on his wingspan than Harris), and more athletic.

Rui would just be another PF on a team that desperately needs wings. He’s a decent player but I’m not sure he’d be a good fit here.

Yeah, no to Rui...Definitely like what he did in the postseason, but no thanks. Austin Reeves is a nice story but I feel like the goal with gems like him it to well...Find your own. I mean what's wrong with digging into the G League? I thought that's what that was for. Mac, Springer, and Louis King all look like NBA players in their own right. Reeves got an opportunity on a crappy team and ran with it. The same thing happened years back with us when we gave TJ McConnell and Covington a look. I think we can do it again. Promote from within.
As far as "targets" go...I don't know. If Harden walks who plays point guard? Maxey? You're kidding yourselves if you think he can be a point guard, run the offense and still be as efficient as he's been. I think we need someone that can at least make the plays Harden was able to make. I mentioned Westbrook a few days ago. I know that doesn't sit well with most of you. Outside of trading Tobias Harris, I think our options this offseason are going to be very limited. I'm sure Morey will do something, but again...If Harden leaves, we might just want to look within. Bring Shake back and let him play with Maxey. I mean, options aren't exactly wide open for us. It's going to be a rather dull offseason.

Off topic but Stephen Strasburg has the same injury Fultz had and is most likely being forced to retire because of it.LeonJordanJr24 wrote:I would love to get Markelle Fultz back

How does acquiring a trade exception work and what would be in for the Rockets?

Say Harden goes to the Rockets w/a $40M salary in year 1. We S&T him there along with a minor sweetener like one or two 2nd round picks, and we get back a $40M trade exception which can be used for up to 1 year.
Gives us flexibility to take back large salaries in trade while remaining an "over the cap" team. This is what the Saltics did when Hayward went to Charlotte, they flipped them a couple 2nds and got back the large trade exception.
More here:
On November 29, 2020, Hayward was signed by the Celtics to a four-year, $120 million deal and then traded to the Charlotte Hornets, along with 2023 and 2024 second-round draft picks, in exchange for a conditional 2022 second-round draft pick.

Got it, thanks. I know what the trade exception is, but was curious if we can get it without giving up any sweeteners.

100% agree with this. It's way past time to stop chasing players like Reaves who are about to get paid and begin to find our own 'hidden gems' - get into the 2nd round and grab a couple of kids, hit the UDFA market hard, and let's start developing talent here that keeps replenishing itself before these kids have to be paid.
If it means taking one step back to take two forward, I'm all for it. We're finally rid of Rivers and the waste of young talent that marked his time here, so let's take a page from the Heat's book and come up with some kids who aren't afraid of the bright lights. I don't have a ton of hope in this happening to the degree I would like, as Morey and Nurse seem set on competing right now, but there's no reason we can't begin to develop the role players that any good organization thrives on having.

A team that plays P.J. Tucker 25+ mpg is in desperate need of a PF.

Agreed, but idk if Rui is that piece.

Edgecombe/Grimes/Gordon
George/Oubre/Edwards

But they've got another PF also playing 33 mpg in the lineup.

The whole reason we play PJ Tucker too much is because we don’t have an actual SF. Instead we let Tobi & PJ take turns getting roasted by actual wings. Rui is just another version of that.

If harden leaves let Shake run the point. Let Reed play some power forward. And for the love of basketball let Louis King play.

Fultz is injured a lot and a low pressure situation like Orlando is ideal for him. I don't know how he would do in Philly again. As a rookie it was too much for him and coming back to Philly maybe more than he can handle. I mean the pressure would be on to perform every single night. He might not be built for that.

+1 on Fultz. Wish him the best, but, he's not it for Philly.
He says off the wall stuff all the time. That will wear thin fast.

Re: FA Targets if Harden leaves
For me, Fultz is a good fit.
But dont expect him to be the savior. I agree with eyeatoma where Fultz plays in a lot of less pressured situation in Orlando. Last time he played in high pressure situations where he run their offense with Vuc, prior to his ACL injury. He’s not yet shown ability to be a go to guy, someone who can carry this team or being reliable on crunch time. And this is coming from probably the one highest on Fultz here
