AR headset. MKBHD suggested the future of sports being able to watch an NBA game as if you're sitting courtside. And I gotta say, that is dope. The thought of being able to drop $x to watch Giannis drop 50 in Game 6...that would be amazing.

For a little bit Oculus was doing a very select few NBA games in 3D and it was awesome. You could choose a VR view from courtside, behind either backboard or a changing camera. The last one was very awkward to me watching in VR but courtside was pretty awesome. Since the facebook integration their events actually got worse. Now it's more like sitting in a suite and just watching the entire court from higher up.

Clamping on a fking headset for hours at a time couldn't be me oh snap 69% off fleshlight with offer code EGGPLANT EMOJI
As tantalizing as courtside seats at home are, you still need a production crew to make it happen. Just because the technology is there - which it isn't at this point - it doesn't address any of the aesthetic issues.
I dunno, the whole thing smacks of the "driverless cars are 5 years away" proclamations made 15 years ago. Like streaming was supposed to liberate the viewer from cable and streaming is now worse. The promise of deep catalog viewing on demand is further away.

I had similar concerns watching the presentation yesterday. As the gaming community would say, "how much of this is cutscene footage and how much of this is gameplay?"
However, I do think that collaboration with Disney here could help lift things off quite a bit. They have the type of resources to throw at NBA on ABC production to get this done, and just by the fact it's Apple, it's more likely than any other VR venture to have enough of an audience that it would be worth it. Disney can piss away money, and there's enough Apple fanboys out there that it probably would penetrate the market better than any other headset
I will say, one thing about Apple, is that there have been so many products of theirs where my initial impressions have been "jesus these are overpriced" or "why would I get this"? AirPods being one example off the top of my head. Overpriced. Better things out there. Yet half the world has 'em because the ecosystem encourages you to get them, and it's seamless. iPad is honestly another one where I remember my naive initial impression was "it's just a bigger iPhone", and then I put it in my hands, and I went "oh, I get it now".

Disney/ABC does have resources. But I look at how they handle their studio broadcast. One overexposed oatmeal company man. Two hot take provocateurs likewise spread thin across the network's properties. One former player.
For good ol' S&G, I took note of the timestamp for the ABC halftime show on Sunday night. It was literally less than 3:00, Greenberg intro and outro included. If they're going to half-ass the championship week of the sport, I have little faith they can do something as ambitious as this.
Also: a grimy-ass headset clamped over your face for hours? Does this sound enjoyable? Does the welder/sword fabricator in your life rock the shield when away from the hearth?

IF they could do something revolutionary with sports viewing and IF they can replicate going to a big ass IMAX theater at home, I'd be interested. But that content has to be really good.

Re: OT: Video Games/Computers/Gadgets/Gizmos
Guys, at least for me, I think this is not a discussion of what could happen when this comes out next year. It's more about what this could mean for 3-5 year, or even 10-15. I don't expect to tune into a game courtside in January, let alone have it be a good experience.
But also - never underestimate how fast tech moves. Tom Scott did a great video about this recently, and not knowing in the present where we're at in a given boom.

The IMAX theater is basically achievable at this point already. Choose any number of pretty hi-res headsets and the Bigscreen app. It puts you in an IMAX theater (or a vintage theater, or a lux home theater, etc) and you can watch anything you are able to stream at home. I watch movies with my brother in Nashville where we both are avatar representations in the theater watching together (along with other NPCs in the theater or up to like 16 real people). It's really very good and my only complaint is my older headset is pretty low res at this point but as I said, plenty of hi-res ones out there.

Re: OT: Video Games/Computers/Gadgets/Gizmos
Really enjoying D4 so far. I've beaten the campaign; I think I'm level 48 or 49 on my Barbarian.
I've tried a few different builds, but I've been playing a Rend / bleed build more than anything. Going to keep that going until I can get some of the required Whirlwind legendary items I think.
Next up I'm going to work on my renown in all the areas to get the skill points, collect all the Lilith statues, and complete the dungeons with Barbarian rewards.

Might be a little while before I pick it up, but if I'm gonna be awful at that game I'll happily be terrible against you guys. I just don't wanna get killed by a 14 year old.

I spent an hour and a half trying to do one intermediate Guile combo trial. You’ll be fine.

How does it compare to D3? I've not yet purchased D4 but I got right back into D3 late last year and played the last 2 seasons a fair bit.

Oooo, there are trials where you get graded? I like the sound of that - that will be super useful for awful newbies. Sounds like the license tests in GT

Madden 24 will finally bring the next-gen version to PC. Only took them years to catch up.
