Spoiler:
I peeped the braids and I was like really

 yeah i raised an eyebrow at that too ngl

Spoiler:
Evil Miles' braids are like a play on the old fictional trope called "the beard of evil", where in stories the good guy's evil twin/clone ends up sporting a beard or goatee:

The part that bothers me is that Black hair has been literally criminalized at times and different areas across the country, so making an Afro-Latino kid's hair being a symbol of him being "evil" was not the best idea in hindsight.

I decided to look up if there was any news on the Winds of Winter book.

It's been like over a year since I checked, so I had a glimmer of hope lol

MrDollarBills wrote:Word the last batch of HxH chapters were mad text heavy  and it still had me hooked in. That's how you know Togashi is a GOAT. Dude literally put out scribbles for us to read and it didn't deter the fanbase at all. I don't think anyone else could have gotten that off the way he did. He earned that grace, but I'm with you I wish he would swallow his pride and turn the art over to his assistants and just provide the writing and rough story boards for them to follow. But, him being a perfectionist is why he is who he is so I can't get upset at that either.

Anime needs to 100% adopt a seasonal model across the board and no series should air until the entire 12 episode order is completed, but there's so much demand and money exchanging hands that it won't happen right away. Honestly, I love the mediums of both manga and anime but I would feel bad not acknowledging how problematic and serious the crunch is on content creators.

re: AI, from what I can tell it can learn, and it can copy, but to me it cannot capture what humans put into art and writing that makes the works stand out. I hate using the word "soul", but there's just somethings a machine cannot replicate or even understand.

if Hollywood thinks that they can ChatGPT their way to smash hit scripts, I'm very skeptical of that.

Straight up stick figures and words were enough to keep fans into the story! I remember getting through the Chimera Ant Arc was torture, but not because of the art. The hiatuses during one of my favorite story arcs of all time were just brutal.

I feel you about the problems for creators. I wish there were clearer ways to push for improvements for the workers. I know how to get involved in American labor fights, Japanese...not so much.

Agreed on AI. They essentially seem like programs designed to take words and spit them back out. That means they'll pump out coherent stuff if you get the prompts right and feed them good data; but they're not creating anything NEW or anything ORIGINAL. It'll always be repackaging something it's been fed before. At least, that's how i understand it.

The Hollywood approach, sounds like they'd like to still hire writers. But use AI to generate the initial scripts and then use writers for editing, rewrites, and making everything work. That'd mean they can keep producers and lead writer credits to themselves, limiting residual payouts and turning writers into gig-workers. That's a rough attempt at explaining it, the Adam Ruins Everything guy was on Majority Report for an interview where he explained it much better.

Either way, it seems like a terrible idea for an industry that has already lost of a lot of originality and shows almost no interest in taking any risks. I suspect that any illusions they have about AI would get a healthy dose of reality fast, when the product sucks and people lost interest. But never underestimate the ability for greed to create fools and ruin good things :banghead:

A Dance with Dragons was pretty poor - especially compared to it's predecessors so my expectations for Winds of Winter (if it ever drops) are extremely low.

Did you peep any of the preview chapters. I remember getting really hype over a Stannis chapter and a Tyrion chapter...but it's been so long that I don't even remember the Stannis chapter and all I remember for Tyrion was that he befriended a couple of other little people.

So much info and so many namedrops for one chapter...I was waiting for those three seraphim but wasn't expecting the crescent moon badass at the end.

Spoiler:
Did we just get confirmation that Shanks is related to one of the sword saints? One Piece Film Red included some canon info right?

Spoiler:
I haven't seen Film Red (or any of the films/filler arcs cause they're non-canon), so I can't speak to that

From what I gather looking at the wiki, it's not clear if Shanks is part of the Figarland family or not, plus I'm not sure how much of that is canon, but I'm pretty sure it will be revealed that that is the case, so no confirmation yet. Probably gonna be confirmed once we get the God Valley backstory

This won't spoil anything from the movie, but...
Spoiler:
The Gorosei talk about Uta aka Shanks' daughter from Film Red, and one says that she's from the Figarland Family. I wish Oda had been more clear about what's canon from the movie, because I know he did a little prequel chapter for the movie and people said that part was canon.

God Valley is just getting more and more hype.

Honestly, the movies are mostly passable. But I'd recommend Film Red, Film Z, and Film Gold to all fans. Those three are absolutely great additions, even if they're not necessarily canon. Film Red in particular has one of the coolest battle scenes in the entire One Piece universe.

Oh, I know the rough outline of what happens

I just have no interest in watching them. I've seen clips, I know some are really good, and I might watch them at some point, but I have no desire to do so for now.

OP 1086:

Something I just thought of

Spoiler:
All the Gorosei are titled something "warrior god", so they're probably all mythical zoans, potentially all mythical human zoans like Luffy or Sengoku

But it all but confirms that they can really fight

I read the Dorne princess chapter a few years ago and enjoyed it at the time. partly because it was a return to the story and I fck with the Dorne. And other than that I can't recall anything about it. and I just don't have any hope whatsoever we will hold that book. And if we do I highly doubt his name will be the only one on the cover.

I feel like the HBO show drained his enthusiasm for the project. I honestly think he just wrote himself into a bad spot. ASOIAF might actually highlight his flaws as a writer. I would think good writers know where a story is going and how to end it.

By no means, I am a saying he's a bad writer. He's great. But for ASOIAF, I dunno know anymore...

Spoiler:
The ASOIAF story has turned into a bunch of resurrections, false identities, fake deaths etc. It's a soap opera. But a good one lol.

You know what? I wouldn't blame him.

My theory is that he doesn't feel like writing it anymore. The HBO series basically spoiled everything and the showrunners disrespected him by the way they handled the last two seasons. Writing a fantasy novel is a massive undertaking and at his age, he probably just wants to do other stuff like executive produce.

It's more that his writing style is to have a very loose idea of where it's going, but to just more let the story play out by just writing how the characters would act

It can be really good in that his focus is always on having the characters drive the plot (which was one of the problems with late season GoT, the characters felt like they had to bend around the plot in order to get where they needed to go), but it also has some obvious drawbacks as you can tell

I would say it's more like manga writing than a lot of books are written

It's the complete opposite of how Brandon Sanderson writes, for example.
