C'mon now. We really had no chance at Silas.

We should have all known he was gonna join Monty's staff, after this clip from a few months ago where Monty showed Silas such love and support after Silas just lost his father.

Yeah, wow. That was likely a done deal as soon as Monty got canned in PHX and was able to build a new staff elsewhere

They had the 2 biggest playoff chokers of all time. Doc and Harden.

Sam has worked for Doc through a lot of his choke jobs, has he not?

Worked for yes, responsible for them no.

But in reality I feel like brad is making a huge mistake by keeping Joe we don't have time to develop a Coach every year is wasting the jays time. They keep getting to ec with multiple coaches imagine if they actually had a veteran caliber coach!! As far as I'm concerned if Joe's the head coach we ain't winning 18 so.

Cassell was on the sidelines for the freaking Seventy-Sixers. How hard did that team fail despite having the literal MVP?

That team is mentally weak best thing they had was maxey

Most of us (myself included) don't know more than one or two assistant coaches at any one time.
Damon Stoudemire.
Larranaga.
Evan Turner lol.
Thibs.
Uhm...
Jim O'Brien, I guess
uhm...
Jimmy Rogers

To put it another way, did any of us know who Joe Mazzulla was before last September? I think I Googled him when they hired him, then quickly moved on to analyzing UDFA on the SL circuit.

Lol exactly!
Same with me. Don’t know the guy at all till he was made interim head coach haha.

I knew Joe as the a-hole point guard who came out of nowhere to beat my Kentucky Wildcats with Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, etc in the Elite 8 in 2010. Surprisingly enough to no one who's followed this team and Joe's coaching philosophies, that West Virginia team had every one of their first half field goals made be from 3. Scored 26 points, 24 of the points off 8 3's and a then added pair of free throws. Much like the 2023 Celtics, UK missed their first 20 attempts to die by the 3 even though they were much more talented. Who knew Joe would go on to embody both of those college teams at the exact same time as a coach with us.

Was that the game where he played the back row of a 1-3-1 zone?

If nothing else makes me think of a parallel to his college experience, it's that lined up with him using Smart as not just a guy who occasionally switched onto Embiid, but actually as one of his primary cover guys.

Hoping we hear some news soon about either Charles Lee or Rondo agreeing to be an assistant coach.

Lee obviously has more coaching experience. And won a ring as an assistant in Milwaukee.

Rondo has 2 rings as a player, 1 of them for the Celtics.

The sources that have been saying that we're going after Lee seem more legit than the sources saying we're going after Rondo.

But I feel like Rondo is more likely to be ok with being the 3rd coach (after Mazzulla and Cassell), considering Lee was the lead assistant this past season in Milwaukee and has interviewed for some HC jobs.

I say, get 1 of them. And then get Redick for shooting coach. Then you have Mazzulla + Lee or Rondo + Redick. Now you're cooking!

Lee taking a step back might sound weird but he might not have a choice. With Griffin presumably wanting to install his own staff, Lee probably can't hold on to his current job even if he wanted to. There's only the Toronto job still vacant and he's not getting that one. The best he can get this cycle is being #2 on some staff but most of those positions are already filled so he might be down to getting a #3 role somewhere. In that case, Boston is as good a choice as any.

I think so. I do remembered he fouled a ton, fouled out even, and I felt like UK had a chance one he went out. Kentucky couldn’t make their free throws all game thought to go with the horrible shooting from 3.

I looked it up and that was his first start of the year. Averaged like 2 points a game coming back from injury. That part I apparently have erased from memory lol.

Hal14 wrote:Who should Brad and Joe hire to fill out the staff?

Cassell is hired - woo!

Who else should we get?

Here's a list of potential targets, not really in any order..

-JJ Redick
-Rajon Rondo
-Mike D'Antoni
-Mike Budenholzer
-Charles Lee
-James Posey
-Doc Rivers
-Derek Fisher
-Steve Nash
-John Lucas
-Jay Larranaga
-Evan Turner
-Nate McMillan
-Phil Pressey
-Rasheed Wallace
-Lloyd Pierce
-Dave Joeger
-Jerome Allen
-Mahmoud Abdelfattah
-Scott Brooks
-Scott Skiles
-Patrick Ewing
-Ryan Gomes
-Kevin Garnett
-Blake Griffin
-Hal14

My picks?

Silas - his dad played for us and he was seen hanging out with Brad recently at the Celtics facility, plus has some HC experience. Young guy who's black so he can relate to the players

Cassell - lots of experience as an assistant, won 3 rings as a player, including 1 with the Celtics, former player who can relate to our players

Redick - Tatum will love it because he's a Duke legend, seems like a smart guy when he does analysis on basketball podcasts and on TV, young guy and former player who can relate to our guys. Plus, he's one of the best shooters of all time, so he can take over as shooting coach, with Ben Sullivan probably leaving for Houston

I'd put Vogel in there, but seems like a decent chance he lands a HC gig. Also, he might not be cool with being an assistant for a guy he has much more HC experience than

D'Antoni would also be good, but he also might not be cool with being an assistant to a guy he has much more HC experience than - plus he's getting really old so might not want to coach anymore.

With Vogel in Phoenix, based on your list, my preferences would be Rajon Rondo and JJ Redick. I'd even prefer them to Sammy, who has already been hired. Oh Well ...

Return to Boston Celtics
